  • Temba Bavuma, Tristan Stubbs put South Africa on top against Sri Lanka on Day 3 of the Durban Test

Temba Bavuma, Tristan Stubbs put South Africa on top against Sri Lanka on Day 3 of the Durban Test

South Africa stamped their authority on Day 3 of the first Test against Sri Lanka at Kingsmead, Durban, setting an imposing target of 516 runs. The home side’s charge was powered by a stellar batting display from skipper Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs, who both notched centuries, and a devastating bowling performance by Marco Jansen, who claimed a remarkable seven-wicket haul in Sri Lanka’s first innings. At stumps, the visitors were struggling at 103/5, facing a monumental task to avoid an innings defeat. With over two days left to play, South Africa’s all-round dominance has left Sri Lanka on the brink.

Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs build a towering lead

After losing three early wickets in their second innings, South Africa looked in trouble, but Bavuma and Stubbs steadied the ship with an incredible 249-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Bavuma’s gritty 113 off 228 balls demonstrated immense patience and leadership, while Stubbs’ maiden Test century, a composed 122 off 221 deliveries, cemented South Africa’s commanding position. The duo blunted Sri Lanka’s bowling attack and methodically accumulated runs, frustrating the visitors. Their efforts allowed South Africa to declare at 366/5, setting a mammoth target of 516. This partnership showcased their class and ensured Sri Lanka had little chance of staging a comeback.

Sri Lanka’s uphill battle in the chase

Sri Lanka’s second innings started poorly, with the openers Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne falling early to Kagiso Rabada and Gerald Coetzee. The middle order showed brief resistance, with Dhananjaya de Silva fighting hard for an unbeaten 31 and Kusal Mendis trying to stabilize the innings. However, consistent pressure from South Africa’s bowlers ensured that wickets kept falling at regular intervals. By the end of Day 3, Sri Lanka were tottering at 103/5, still needing 413 runs for an unlikely victory. With two full days remaining, the visitors face an uphill battle to salvage the game and avoid a heavy defeat.

Earlier, Marco Jansen’s sensational bowling in Sri Lanka’s first innings was the highlight of the South Africa, as he tore through the batting lineup to finish with career-best figures of 7/13. His sharp pace and steepling bounce exploited the conditions perfectly, leaving the batters in disarray. Sri Lanka’s innings crumbled to a dismal 42 all out in just 13.5 overs, with only Kamindu Mendis managing a double-digit score (13). Jansen’s fiery spell not only secured a huge 149-run lead for South Africa but also sent a clear message about his prowess as a premier pacer. His performance set the tone for South Africa’s dominance in the match.

Watch: Tristan Stubbs celebrates like David Warner after Suryakumar Yadav falls to terrific yorker in 2nd T20I

The South Africa National Cricket Team star Tristan Stubbs pulled off a David Warner-like celebration after the dismissal of the India National Cricket Team skipper Suryakumar Yadav on Sunday, November 10.

The pacer Andile Simelane dismissed Suryakumar Yadav with a perfect yorker in the second T20I of the four-match series at St George’s Park in Gqeberha, and it delighted Tristan Stubbs.

Andile Simelane dismisses Suryakumar Yadav and Tristan Stubbs celebrates wildly

Suryakumar Yadav was unable to fire with the bat in the second T20I against the Proteas. Just like other batters, he struggled on a tough pitch and couldn’t get going.

Suryakumar Yadav came up with a knock of just four runs off nine balls in the match and he was dismissed on the last ball of the fourth over, leaving India struggling at 15/3.

Notably, Simelane bowled a perfect yorker to Suryakumar Yadav and the Indian skipper shuffled across early to play his shot. However, he got beaten and the ball crashed into the back shoe. It looked plumb at first sight and after a discussion with Tilak Varma, the Indian skipper decided against taking a review and walked back to the hut.

As the on-field umpire raised his finger, Tristan Stubbs was shown on screen doing a David Warner-like celebration. Notably, he jumped in delight and punched the air just like David Warner, who made this leaping celebration his trademark.

    Watch: Tristan Stubbs’ epic celebration

Speaking after winning the Player of the Match award for his match-winning 47-run knock, the Proteas star Tristan Stubbs said that they made sure that the run rate was in their control.

Tristan Stubbs also lauded his batting partner Gerald Coetzee for hitting boundaries and scoring runs at a quick pace. The South African batter further revealed that he was quite nervous while batting because some of his people came to watch. After all, it was his mother’s birthday. He elaborated:

“The run rate never got away from us. Coetzee came in and played that innings in the end and we got over the line. He (Coetzee) walked in and said we can win this.

“It was always two hits away being back to run-a-ball. I just tried to breathe. It’s my mom’s birthday so there were 20-30 people who came to watch the game. This is my favourite place to play cricket. I was nervous, so I was trying to control my breathing.”

Very happy to get a big wicket under my name – Andile Simelane

During the mid-innings break, the 21-year-old Andile Simelane revealed that he was ready with his plans when his skipper, Aiden Markram, handed him the ball in the 4th over. He said:

“When Aiden told me that I’m going to bowl the 4th over, I thought about the options we had and the lengths we want to bowl. We had our plans to Sky. We executed our plans and I’m happy. The coaches told me to back my slower balls and I managed to execute them.”

Andile Simelane further said that he was delighted to pick up the wicket of the former World No.1 batter Suryakumar Yadav and labeled it as an unforgettable experience. He said:

“(On taking Suryakumar’s wicket) Very happy to get a big wicket under my name, it’s something special I will not forget. It’s nice working with them, they told me not to worry. They motivated me and I managed to stay calm.”

  • IRE vs SA: Fans laud Tristan Stubbs for his sensational maiden century in the 2nd ODI

IRE vs SA: Fans laud Tristan Stubbs for his sensational maiden century in the 2nd ODI

In the 2nd ODI between South Africa and Ireland in Abu Dhabi on Friday (October 4), Tristan Stubbs smashed his maiden century, propelling South Africa to an imposing total of 343/4 in their 50 overs. Opting to bat first, South Africa began on a solid note before Stubbs aggressively took the Irish bowlers to the cleaners. Despite Ireland’s efforts to control the run flow, his knock was the highlight of South Africa’s innings, which saw significant contributions from other batters.

Tristan Stubbs’ arrival at the crease

Stubbs came to the crease with South Africa at 136/2 in the 24th over after Rassie van der Dussen’s dismissal. With a strong platform already laid, Stubbs wasted no time in settling down and began his innings by rotating the strike efficiently. As he built his partnership with Kyle Verreynne, Stubbs gradually shifted gears, hitting powerful boundaries and launching towering sixes that disrupted Ireland’s bowling plans. His intent was clear from the outset: to dominate the middle overs and accelerate as South Africa moved towards the death overs.

A maiden century of sheer brilliance

Stubbs reached his century in just 75 balls, a testament to his clean striking and smart shot selection. His innings was laced with 8 boundaries and 3 sixes, showcasing his ability to blend finesse with brute power. His aggressive play in the final 10 overs significantly boosted South Africa’s total, as they amassed 97 runs during this period. Stubbs’ innings was a perfect example of how to pace an ODI knock, starting cautiously before launching into full throttle in the latter half. He remained unbeaten on 112 from 81 deliveries, anchoring the innings through the middle overs and finishing with a flourish.

    South Africa’s dominant batting display

South Africa’s innings was built on a series of steady partnerships, beginning with the opening pair of Ryan Rickelton and Temba Bavuma. Rickelton was the first to fall after a fluent 40, while Bavuma had to retire hurt on 35 after looking in good touch. Van der Dussen and Verreynne ensured that the scoring didn’t slow down, adding vital runs in the middle. Verreynne’s contribution of 67 off 64 balls was instrumental in setting the stage for Stubbs’ late assault. Wiaan Mulder also chipped in with a quickfire 43 off 34 balls, providing the perfect support to Stubbs during the death overs. Together, South Africa’s top and middle order ensured they crossed the 300-run mark comfortably.

    Ireland’s struggles with the ball

Ireland’s bowlers, despite some initial breakthroughs, struggled to contain the onslaught from Stubbs and Mulder. Craig Young was the pick of the bowlers, picking 1/79 in his 10 overs, while Gavin Hoey (1/49) and Curtis Campher (1/22) managed to grab a wicket each. However, the Irish attack lacked consistency and failed to maintain pressure, especially during the final 10 overs. Andy McBrine was the most economical, conceding just 43 runs in his full quota of 10 overs while picking up Verreynne’s crucial wicket. Mark Adair and Graham Hume were taken to the cleaners, both conceding 79 runs apiece, and despite their efforts, the South African batters remained unperturbed.

  • WI vs SA: South Africa’s best playing XI for the T20I series against West Indies

WI vs SA: South Africa’s best playing XI for the T20I series against West Indies

After a successful Test series win over the West Indies earlier this month, where South Africa emerged victorious with a 1-0 margin after the first match ended in a draw, the focus now shifts to the shorter format. The Proteas are set to face the West Indies in a three-match T20I series, with all matches scheduled to take place in Tarouba, Trinidad, on August 23, 25, and 27.

Absence of key players in the South Africa lineup

Riding high on the wave of confidence from their Test series victory, South Africa will be eager to extend their winning streak into the T20I series. However, this ambition will be tested as they field a relatively inexperienced squad. The absence of stalwarts like Quinton de Kock, David Miller, Tabraiz Shamsi, Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj leaves a significant void in the lineup. This scenario, nevertheless, presents a golden opportunity for fresh talent to rise to the occasion and establish themselves on the international stage.

New faces and fresh opportunities against West Indies

The absence of senior players has opened the door for young and promising talent to showcase their abilities on the international stage. Jason Smith and Kwena Maphaka are among the new additions to the squad. Maphaka, who impressed with three five-wicket hauls in the U-19 World Cup earlier this year, has already made his IPL debut with Mumbai Indians. His inclusion in the Proteas squad is highly anticipated, as he looks to replicate his U-19 success at the senior level.

Other players like Jason Smith, Donovan Ferreira and Patrick Kruger, who have been consistent performers in domestic and franchise cricket, will also have the chance to shine in the Proteas colors. Both Wiaan Mulder and Ryan Rickelton, who have been on the fringes of the national team, will be keen to make a significant impact and cement their places in the squad.

  • IPL 2025 Auction: 4 players DC can retain as per the current ‘3+1’ rule

IPL 2025 Auction: 4 players DC can retain as per the current ‘3+1’ rule

As the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 draws near, the much-anticipated mega auction is set to reshuffle the decks for all ten franchises, with most players being released back into the auction pool.

Delhi Capitals’ strategy for a title-contending core

For the Delhi Capitals (DC), a team that has long been searching for its maiden IPL title despite being part of the league since its inception, this auction represents a crucial opportunity to reset and rebuild. After a disappointing 2024 season, where they failed to qualify for the playoffs, Delhi are poised to embark on a long-term strategy to forge a stable and competitive core that can lead them to consistent success in the coming years.

Historical challenges and the need for stability

Delhi have been one of the most enigmatic franchises in IPL history, often showing promise but faltering at key moments. Despite making it to the playoffs six times in 16 seasons, they have only reached the final once, a testament to their inconsistent performances. One of the primary reasons for this has been the frequent changes in the team’s core.

Delhi have often tinkered with their playing styles and squad composition, preventing players from settling into a cohesive unit. This lack of stability has been a significant hindrance to developing a winning culture within the team. In recent seasons, DC attempted to build a core around a group of young players, but even this approach failed to yield the desired results, leaving the franchise once again at a crossroads.

4 possible key retentions by Delhi Capitals ahead of IPL 2025:

With the mega auction on the horizon, Delhi have the opportunity to establish a strong foundation by retaining a select group of players who can lead the team into a new era of success. The focus will be on acquiring and retaining players who not only bring immediate value but also have the potential to serve the team for the next five to six years. Here’s a detailed look at the key players DC might retain to form a robust core:

    1. Jake Fraser-McGurk: The Aggressive Opener

Jake Fraser-McGurk, the young Australian sensation, made waves in IPL 2024 with his fearless and ultra-aggressive approach at the top of the order. His performances instilled a new sense of belief within the Capitals, demonstrating that they could adapt to the fast-evolving landscape of T20 cricket. Fraser-McGurk’s ability to take on the bowlers from the outset can give DC a crucial edge in setting or chasing competitive totals.

His dynamic style of play aligns perfectly with the modern demands of the game, making him an invaluable asset as DC looks to build a future-proof squad. Fraser-McGurk impressed with his exceptional strike rate of 234.04, amassing 330 runs in 9 innings at an average of 36.66, with four fifties. His 32 fours and 28 sixes reflect his power-packed performance.

    2. Tristan Stubbs: The Middle-Order Powerhouse

South African middle-order batter Tristan Stubbs epitomizes the aggressive, dynamic approach that has become synonymous with success in T20 cricket. While Fraser-McGurk can provide explosive starts, Stubbs can take the baton and maintain the pressure on the opposition in the middle overs. His ability to accelerate the scoring rate and finish innings strongly makes him a critical component of DC’s batting lineup.

By retaining Stubbs, Delhi can ensure they have the firepower needed to dominate the crucial middle stages of their innings, turning tight games in their favor. Stubbs showcased his explosive hitting ability with a strike rate of 190.90, scoring 378 runs in 13 innings at an average of 54.00, including three half-centuries. His 24 fours and 26 sixes underline his aggressive style

    3. Kuldeep Yadav: The Spin Maestro

Kuldeep Yadav, the experienced left-arm wrist spinner, has been a cornerstone of DC’s bowling attack in recent seasons. His ability to control the game in the middle overs with his variations and accuracy has often been the deciding factor in many of DC’s victories. As the Capitals transition into a new phase, Kuldeep’s experience and skill will be essential in maintaining a balanced and potent bowling unit.

His presence provides DC with a reliable option to contain runs and take wickets in crucial phases of the game, making him an indispensable part of their plans. In IPL 2024, Kuldeep delivered a consistent performance for Delhi, taking 16 wickets in 11 innings. He bowled 43 overs, conceding 372 runs at an average of 23.25 and a strike rate of 16.1. His best bowling figures of 4/55 highlighted his ability to take crucial wickets, and he maintained an economy rate of 8.65 throughout the season

    4. Axar Patel: The All-Round Match-Winner

Axar Patel has transformed into one of the most reliable and versatile all-rounders in world cricket, and his contributions in both departments have been pivotal for DC. In 2024, Axar scored 235 runs and took 11 wickets, underlining his value as a genuine match-winner. His performances in the T20 World Cup 2024 further solidified his reputation as a player who can deliver under pressure. Retaining Axar would provide DC with a player who can contribute in all facets of the game, offering balance and depth to both the batting and bowling departments.

    The linchpin facing uncertainty

Rishabh Pant has been a pivotal figure for the Delhi, serving both as a leader and a prolific run-scorer. In the IPL 2024 season, Pant excelled as the franchise’s top scorer, amassing 446 runs in 13 innings at an average of 40.50 and a strike rate of 155.40, including three half-centuries.

However, despite his significant contributions for DC, Pant’s performance on the international stage has faced scrutiny, particularly after the T20 World Cup 2024 where he struggled to make an impact. This international underperformance, combined with the departure of DC’s head coach Ricky Ponting, has fueled rumors about Pant’s potential release ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. The lack of recent results in the shorter formats has led to questions about his future with the franchise.

Twitter reactions: Abishek Porel, Tristan Stubbs’ thunderous knock power DC to victory over LSG | IPL 2024

In Match 64 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Abhishek Porel and Tristan Stubbs‘ explosive knocks propelled Delhi Capitals (DC) to a convincing 19-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Tuesday (May 14) at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi

    Abishek Porel’s explosive start

DC posted an impressive score of 208/4 in their 20 overs, showcasing a blend of aggressive and strategic batting. The innings started poorly with Jake Fraser-McGurk falling for a duck in the second ball of the match, caught by Naveen-ul-Haq off Arshad Khan‘s bowling. However, Abishek Porel‘s explosive 58 off 33 balls, which included 5 fours and 4 sixes, provided a solid foundation. Shai Hope contributed with a well-paced 38 off 27 balls, keeping the momentum steady.

    Tristan Stubbs’ late-order onslaught

The middle order saw Rishabh Pant adding 33 from 23 balls before falling to Naveen. The standout performance came from Tristan Stubbs, who blasted an unbeaten 57 off just 25 balls, with 3 fours and 4 sixes, supported by Axar Patel’s quickfire 14 off 10 balls. Their aggressive approach, especially in the death overs, ensured a formidable total of 208 runs.

    Lucknow Super Giants’ bowling struggles

LSG’ bowlers had a challenging day on the field, struggling to contain the DC’s batters. Arshad managed to take an early wicket but was expensive, conceding 45 runs in his 3 overs. Naveen was slightly more successful with figures of 2/51, but he too leaked runs at crucial moments. Ravi Bishnoi was the pick of the bowlers, with a more economical 1/26, providing some control in the middle overs. However, the rest of the bowling unit, including Mohsin Khan, Yudhvir Singh, Krunal Pandya and Deepak Hooda failed to make significant breakthroughs, allowing DC to pile up a daunting total.

Fight from Nicholas Pooran and Arshad Khan

In response, LSG had a shaky start, losing captain KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock early in the innings. Ishant Sharma‘s brilliant spell of 3/34, dismantled the top order, as he claimed the key wickets of Rahul and de Kock. Hooda fell for a duck, compounding their troubles. Despite a spirited 61 off 27 balls from Nicholas Pooran, and a resilient unbeaten 58 off 33 balls by Arshad towards the end, the rest of the batting lineup crumbled under pressure. Marcus Stoinis, Ayush Badoni and Pandya couldn’t provide the necessary support, and despite some late fireworks, LSG could only manage 189/9 in their 20 overs, falling short by 19 runs.

    Delhi Capitals’ effective bowling display

DC’s bowlers complemented their batters efforts with a disciplined performance. Ishant led the attack with his crucial wickets upfront. Mukesh Kumar and Kuldeep Yadav supported well, each taking one wicket and maintaining a tight line, conceding 33 runs in their respective four-over spells. Khaleel Ahmed and Axar chipped in with a wicket each, while Stubbs and Gulbadin Naib kept things under control during their brief spells. The collective effort ensured that despite Pooran and Arshad Khan’s efforts, LSG never truly threatened the target, securing a well-deserved victory for DC.

3 South African players poised for lucrative deals in the upcoming IPL 2024 Auction

South Africans have consistently played crucial roles in the success of teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since its inception in 2008. As the league approaches its 17th season, it continues to attract global cricket superstars, and South African players remain integral to its dynamics. The auction for the 17th edition of the tournament will take place in Dubai.

South African players strong presence in the IPL

Ahead of the IPL auction on December 19, eleven South African players, including the seasoned Faf du Plessis, have been retained. Du Plessis, a former Proteas captain, has been a stalwart in the IPL since 2012,  now representing the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) alongside Indian icon Virat Kohli.

Quinton de Kock, the prolific South African wicketkeeper-batter, has recently retired from Test cricket and the fifty-over format after a stellar performance in the Cricket ODI World Cup 2023 in India. Despite stepping back from international duties, De Kock is expected to feature for South Africa at the  ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. His form for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the IPL could play a decisive role for his selection ahead of the World Cup.

Additionally, the dynamic trio of Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen and Marco Jansen, representing the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), are anticipated to make significant contributions in the IPL 2024. These players played pivotal roles in the Proteas reaching the semi-final of the CWC 2023, further solidifying South Africa’s impact on the global cricket stage.

Making his World Cup debut at the age of 23, Gerald Coetzee showcased his prowess by outperforming established names like Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi. Setting a record with 20 wickets in the tournament, he emerged as the highest wicket-taker by a South African in a single World Cup edition. Coetzee’s raw pace and effectiveness in the middle overs, coupled with notable contributions with the bat, position him as a valuable asset for potential IPL teams.

    2. Rilee Rossouw

The destructive top-order batter, Rilee Rossouw, has been released by Delhi Capitals (DC) ahead of the IPL 2024 auction. With previous stints at RCB in the 2011 and 2014 editions, Rossouw brings seasoned experience and a proven track record. His base price of 2 crores makes him an attractive option for teams aiming to bolster their top-order firepower and strengthen their batting lineups in the upcoming season.

  • Marsh, Short power Australia to T20 series win over South Africa

Marsh, Short power Australia to T20 series win over South Africa

Matthew Short and captain Mitchell Marsh powered Australia to a series-clinching eight-wicket win over South Africa in the second Twenty20 international at Kingsmead.

Seamers Sean Abbott and Nathan Ellis took three wickets each as South Africa were restricted to 164 for eight after being sent in.

It was nowhere near enough as Short (66) and Marsh (79 not out) took Australia to victory with 31 balls to spare. The pair put on 100 for the second wicket off 47 balls.

Abbott, who took three for 22, was named man of the match.

“The pitch probably suited the bowlers tonight. A lot of credit has to go to the batsmen, it wasn’t easy for batting,” he said.

Marsh played his second unbeaten innings after scoring a career best 92 not out in his side’s 111-run win in the first game at the same venue on Wednesday.

He made his runs off 39 balls with eight fours and six sixes. Opening batsman Short hit seven fours and four sixes off 30 balls in his second international match.

“A series win in South Africa isn’t easy to come by,” said Marsh.

    “All our bowlers were fantastic.”

Temba Bavuma gave South Africa a fast start, scoring 35 off 17 balls, before he was Abbott’s first victim.

South Africa lost four wickets for ten runs in 17 balls, including a double-wicket maiden by Ellis, as they slumped to 46 for four. Ellis finished with three for 25.

Captain Aiden Markram hit 49 and put on 51 for the fifth wicket with Tristan Stubbs (27) in a partial recovery by the hosts.

The third and final match is also in Durban on Sunday.

WATCH: Dwaine Pretorius and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s tag-team catch to dismiss Tristan Stubbs – IPL 2023, CSK vs MI

Teamwork is vital for any sport, and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) match in IPL 2023 provided an excellent example of it. During the game, Dwaine Pretorius and Ruturaj Gaikwad worked together brilliantly to pull off an exciting catch, sending back MI’s Tristan Stubbs. The catch, which could only be described as tag-team work at its best, proved the significance of teamwork in cricket.

CSK restricted MI to 157/8 with a spirited bowling performance at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. MI had some good starts, but their batters failed to convert them into anything substantial. Ishan Kishan was the top-scorer with 32 off 21 balls. Although MI could have scored more runs, Stubbs’ dismissal prevented that from happening. Coming in place of Jofra Archer, Stubbs aimed to give MI a fiery finish along with Tim David.

Batting on five off nine balls, Stubbs attempted to loft the ball over long-off. He failed to time the slower delivery, which was an off-cutter and was pitched outside off stump. At this point, Pretorius and Gaikwad pulled off an excellent catch near the boundary line. Pretorius lost his balance while tracking back but threw the ball upwards before falling. Running from long-on, Gaikwad completed the catch comfortably, giving the finishing touches to Pretorius’ excellent effort.

    Here’s the video:

For CSK, the local boy Ajinkya Rahane played a scintillating knock of 61 in just 27 balls, which helped the MS Dhoni-led side chase down the total with seven wickets in hand and 11 balls to spare.
