It will be the first time a subsection of players will come out of the offseason having played competitive basketball, as the Unrivaled Basketball League has done what it was intended to do. One specific player from that league who will have a lot of eyes on her in 2025 is Angel Reese.

    The Chicago Sky All-Star is a bit of a polarizing player and personality. On the court, her tenacious playstyle has led to some criticism, as has her offensive repertoire. Off the court, her brash attitude rubs some people the wrong way. But Reese continues to have a lot of fans, especially on social media, where she reigns supreme across various platforms.

    Reese hasn’t missed an opportunity to be active on social media while playing for Rose BC in Unrivaled. In fact, she got help from fellow WNBA star Napheesa Collier to put together a stellar recreation of a trending meme.

    The Unrivaled social media account felt it apt to dub Reese the “TikTok Barbie“. Reese’s new nickname is a play on her “Bayou Barbie” moniker that came to fruition during her college basketball days at LSU.

    “Barbie” appears to always be a part of her nicknames, as the other two that have been given to her are “Chi Barbie” and “Rebounding Barbie“. It’s only a matter of time before she does something noteworthy to get a new one.

    The first half of the inaugural Unrivaled League season is in the books, and while things got off to a hot start for the 3v3 league, things haven’t gone as everyone anticipated since then.

    Founded by stars like Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, the league gives WNBA players a chance to play during the offseason as they await for the new campaign to begin.

    The first day of action got off to hot start when Stewart lost to rookie Aliyah Edwards. However, after that the league has been hit with several headaches.

    One involved Rachel Annamarie DeMita, who on her YouTube channel, noted that even part owners were speaking out against the league.

    She noted that Rhyne Howard was retweeting posts on X which claimed the league was rigged after she lost to Courtney Williams.

    Then she also how noted how Angel Reese was openly criticizing the league as well.

    “So Angel Reese was ejected in one of the games by getting two technical fouls in a row and then after the game, someone said ejection and unrivaled the refs are out of their mind and Angel Reese retweeted and she said I can’t wait to get back to Chicago man,” DeMita stated. 

    “This is a stark difference from the beginning of the season where Angel Reese basically said if she never had to leave Unrivaled, she wouldn’t.” 

    Other issues Unrivaled is facing

    Another big issue the league is facing is TV ratings. While it remains popular on social media, they haven’t been able to translate that into people watching the games.

    “So the opening weekend the numbers were pretty strong, there were 313k average viewers.” DeMita noted. “Now the viewership dipped significantly next Saturday, and then Monday it also dipped but as the weeks continue to go ratings have gone pretty significantly.

    “All the viewership has now been in the 100ks.”

    Along with ratings, injuries have played a big part in hurting the product. Several players were forced to miss the 1v1 tournament due to injuries, while a Laces BC game against Vinyl BC was cancelled because Laces didn’t have enough players.

    All of this has led to challenging first season for Unrivaled League, meaning they have plenty to work on as they head into the final stretch of action.

    A promising debut to life in the WNBA in 2024 was sadly ended when the ex-LSU Tiger fractured her wrist and had to undergo surgery, meaning she finished with averages of 13.6 points, 13.1 rebounds and 1.3 steals as a rookie.

    Now able to shoot baskets again, she’s back on the court in the new 3×3 basketball league but she might be lacking match sharpness based on her debut performance. Reese surrendered five turnovers, shot 42% from the field and committed four fouls.

    Whilst she did manage to lead her teammates Chelsea Gray and Kahleah Copper with 12 rebounds, she never tried to shoot a three-pointer and was eventually subbed in the fourth quarter as Rose fell to a 79-73 defeat to Vinyl.

    After months out of the game, she could be dealing with some match sharpness issues and may need to adjust to her new wrist after surgery.

    All the same, she has demonstrated throughout her career she has the power to bounce back.

    Reese’s fashion steals the show… For the wrong reasons

    But all the talk wasn’t just about her on-court appearance. It was about her fashion sense too as she showed off some of her incredible wealth by arriving to the Wayfair Arena on January 17 draped in luxury goods

    “I’m wearing Pucci, I’m wearing Chanel, I’m wearing Hermes, I’m wearing diamonds,” Reese, noted for her style, told reporters. However, not all of her fans were too keen on the look since she didn’t back it up.

    One user said via X.com, “That’s nice, how about you make an open layup though?”

    A second commented, “Doing all that to shoot 2/10 from the field.”
