Twitter reactions: Nat Sciver, Issy Wong steer Mumbai Indians to WPL final after big win over UP Warriorz

In the Eliminator of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023, Mumbai Indians (MI) got the better of UP Warriorz and booked their spot in the tournament’s final.

Chasing the huge target of 183, the Warriorz never really got the desired momentum as they kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. UP were three down for 21 before Kiran Navgire and Grace Harris tried to calm things down by adding 35 runs for the fourth wicket.

After losing Harris, Navgire formed another crucial partnership of 28 runs for the fifth wicket with Deepti Sharma. Then came Issy Wong, who had already dismissed UP’s skipper Alyssa Healy. Wong completely destroyed the Warriorz, whatever left hopes, as she went on to take a hat-trick to ensure MI set up the summit clash with Delhi Capitals (DC). Eventually, UP got bundled out for 110, losing the contest by 72 runs.

Earlier, after being asked to bat, Mumbai went on to post a massive total of 182/4 in their assigned 20 overs, courtesy of Nat Sciver-Brunt’s splendid knock. The star all-rounder stayed unbeaten on 72 off just 38 deliveries, including 9 fours and 2 sixes to power MI to an enormous total.

Apart from the veteran English cricketer, Amelia Kerr (29), Hayley Matthews (26) and Yastika Bhatia (21) chipped in with valuable contributions. For UP, Sophie Ecclestone picked up two wickets for 39 runs in her quota of 4 overs.

WPL 2023: Delhi beat Warriorz to reach the final; Mumbai thrash Bangalore in Tuesday’s double-header

The last league match day in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 saw an exciting double-header where Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the afternoon fixture while Delhi Capitals (DC) got the better of UP Warriorz in the evening game.

Mumbai chose to bowl first after winning the toss, which proved to be a good decision as they managed to restrict RCB to a total of 125/9 in their allotted 20 overs. Richa Ghosh and Ellyse Perry were the top scorers for the team, each contributing 29 runs. Amelia Kerr being the pick of the bowlers for MI with figures of 3/22. Nat Sciver-Brunt also chipped in with 2 wickets for 24 runs in her quota of 4 overs.

In response, MI got off to a solid start with their openers Yastika Bhatia and Hailye Matthews putting on a 53-run partnership. After their dismissal, Amelia, who shined with the ball, played a crucial knock of 31 not out off 27 balls, including 4 fours, to steer her team to victory. For Bangalore, Kanika Ahuja finished with figures of 2/5 in a single over.

In the evening fixture, the Capitals comprehensively defeated the Warriorz to go directly into the finals of WPL 2023. Bowling first, DC restricted UP at 138/6, with Alice Capsey bagging three wickets for 26 in her quota of 4 overs. Radha Yadav also bagged a couple of scalps for 28 runs in 4 overs.

Tahlia McGrath was the star performer for the Warriorz with an unbeaten 58 off just 32 balls, including 8 fours and 2 sixes. Captain Alyssa Healy also made a valuable contribution of 36 runs off 34 balls with 4 fours and 1 six.

  • WPL 2023: Qualification Scenarios for Royal Challengers Bangalore, UP Warriorz and Gujarat Giants

WPL 2023: Qualification Scenarios for Royal Challengers Bangalore, UP Warriorz and Gujarat Giants

New Zealand veteran Sophie Devine‘s whirlwind 99-run knock inspired Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to a memorable win in the thrilling contest against Gujarat Giants (GG) in Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023. The 8-wicket victory also kept RCB alive in the race to playoffs, where Mumbai Indians (MI) have already qualified, and Delhi Capitals (DC) are way too much close to book a place.

Further, in the afternoon fixture of the doubleheader on Saturday, UP Warriorz (UPW) defeated Mumbai to boost their chances of securing the third playoff spot. On that note, let’s have a look at the qualification prospects for the three bottom-placed teams:

    Royal Challengers Bangalore

RCB, at present, have a net run rate (NRR) of -1.044 after playing seven games, while Gujarat have an NRR of -2.511 after the same number of fixtures. Similarly, the Warriorz have an NRR of -0.117 after playing six games. The Challengers’ chances of qualification depend on them winning their last game and moving to six points, and hope that Warriorz lose their last two games against the Giants and the Capitals.

Now, if the three results go in that fashion, three teams will share the six points, and then the NRRs will come into play. So the Challengers will need a slightly bigger margin in their last match to ensure they stay ahead in the NRRs.

    Gujarat Giants

The Giants are almost out of the playoffs race, primarily because of their terrible NRR. Even if they beat Warriorz in their next fixture, they would still require Warriorz to lose against Capitals by a massive margin of 112 runs to surpass them on NRR. Additionally, the Giants would also need RCB to lose their final game.

    UP Warriorz

In the case of UP Warriorz, if they manage to win one of their last two games, they will secure a place in the playoffs. Even if they lose both games, but by narrow margins, the Alyssa Healy-led side still have a chance to make it to the playoffs.

WPL 2023: Sophie Devine’s 99 inspire RCB’s mega win over GG; UPW beat MI in Saturday’s double-header

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 saw an exciting double-header on Saturday where UP Warriorz defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) in the afternoon fixture while Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) got the better off Gujarat Giants (GG) in the evening game.

Bowling first, UP bundled out Mumbai for 127 in 20 overs, with opener Hayley Matthews scoring the maximum 35 off 30 balls. Sophie Ecclestone was the pick of the bowler for the Warriorz, bagging three wickets for 15 runs in her quota of 4 overs. Similarly, Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Deepti Sharma picked up two wickets each.

In the chase, Mumbai bowlers took the game to the wire keeping the Warriorz run for their money. Grace Harris with 39 off 28 and Tahlia McGrath with 38 off 25 top-scored for UP as the Alyssa Healy-led side completed the chase with three balls to spare and five wickets in hand.

The second fixture was a high-scoring encounter with both sides scoring over 180 runs in their respective innings. Batting first, the Giants posted 188/4 in 20 overs, courtesy of Laura Wolvaardt’s brilliant 68-run knock.

The massive target was gunned down easily by the Challengers as they completed the chase within 16 overs. Opener Sophie Devine destroyed the Giants’ bowling attack with her whirlwind batting exhibition.

Devine formed a scintillating 125-run opening partnership with captain Smriti Mandhana as the duo kept the run-rate high to keep their side in the chase. Devine missed out on smashing what could be a stunning century by a solitary run as she was dimsieed on 99 from just 36 deliveries, with the help of nine fours and eight sixes. The Challengers eventually finished off the proceedings in 15.3 overs with eight wickets in hand.

WPL 2023 [Twitter reactions]: Kanika Ahuja, bowlers help RCB beat UP Warriorz to claim maiden victory

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) finally registered their maiden victory in the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL) after defeating UP Warriorz by five wickets at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai on Wednesday.

Chasing the paltry target of 136, RCB were in a spot of bother after losing four wickets for 60 in nine overs. Before the Warriorz could capitalise further, Kanika Ahuja stepped up for the Challengers and took the game away from UP.

Kanika smashed 46 from 30 deliveries, including eight fours and one six. She was well supported by Richa Ghosh, who stayed unbeaten on 31 off 32 balls to take the Challengers over the finish line.

Earlier, RCB bowlers exhibited top-class bowling and kept the pressure on UP from the word go. Only Grace Harris stood tall in front of RCB’s bowlers and revived her side by contributing 46 runs off just 32 balls, with the help of five fours and two sixes.

Ellyse Perry was the standout bowler for the Challengers, taking three wickets for just 16 runs in her quota of four overs. Sophie Devine also bowled well, taking 2 wickets for 23 runs as UP Warriorz were bowled out for 135 runs in 19.3 overs.

“Yeah, it was tense. We lost a couple of wickets in the 7th over, it was a bit nervous. But the way Kanika and Richa played was brilliant. Kanika in particular, really proud of her. Really excited to see her bat, the approach she has. She is a 360 degree player, who isn’t the most common in Indian cricket. Really impressed with her and the belief she has. Even when we have not been in great positions, the crowd keep chanting for us. Really happy for this loyal support base, not a lot of teams will have supporters turn up in such high numbers after losing five games,” said RCB skipper Smriti Mandhana in the post-match presentation.

Mumbai Indians (MI) continued their winning streak as they defeated UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 match at the Brabourne Stadium on Sunday, March 12. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side has now won all four matches and remains at the top of the points table.

UP Warriorz skipper Alyssa Healy chose to bat first after winning the toss. Saika Ishaque produced a clinical bowling effort as MI restricted Warriorz to 159/6. She dismissed Devika Vaidya in her first over but conceded four boundaries to Healy in the next over. The wicket-keeper batter scored 58 off 46 balls. Saika later made a brilliant comeback and took the wickets of Healy and Tahila McGrath (50 off 37 balls) in the same over.

In the chase, Mumbai got off to a solid start as Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews added 51 runs in the powerplay. Meanwhile, Harmanpreet led her side from the front once again as she played an unbeaten knock of 53 off 33 balls to help Mumbai Indians defeat UP Warriorz by eight wickets.

Nat Sciver-Brunt registers best bowling figuers

Nat Sciver-Brunt was full in form as she displayed some brilliant performance with bat and ball. She gave away only 19 runs in an economical spell and scored an unbeaten 45 off 31 balls.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s blistering knock helps MI win

Harmanpreet Kaur played a scintillating knock of 53* off 33 balls smacking one maximum and nine boundaries. She stitched a superb unbeaten 106-run stand with Sciver-Brunt, which helped her side to chase the 160-run target with 2.3 overs to spare.

    Losing captain Alyssa Healy:

We were probably 16-20 short, we just couldn’t finish well and probably a batter short. It wasn’t an easy wicket, we couldn’t find the boundary as often as we would have liked. We will see how we can be better. We will turn up in 2 days time, play RCB and move on. We want to be a really good fielding side and take opportunities. We are working really hard, trying really hard which is what we want to be as a team and hopefully the results go our way.

Player of the Match and Winning captain Harmanpreet Kaur:

    Nat Sciver-Brunt:

It feels brilliant. The team is on a real high and we are really enjoying it. There was a little bit of seam movement early on, I was trying not to get hit for 4s and 6s. The spinners if they bowled the right pace it was a little stoppy and gripping as well. We learnt that from the first innings. It’s amazing batting with her (Harmanpreet) and batting with everyone as well.
