Reds rocked: Mass changes backfire as PL leader crashes out of FA Cup to Championship struggler

Liverpool’s quest for a quadruple came to a crashing halt on Sunday (Monday AEDT) as they were dumped out of the FA Cup with a 1-0 defeat by Championship strugglers Plymouth.

Ryan Hardie scored the only goal from the penalty spot as Arne Slot was made to pay for resting his star names as he suffered just a fourth defeat in 38 games as Liverpool boss.

Plymouth sit rock bottom of the English second tier, but have now taken two Premier League scalps on their way into round five after winning at Brentford in round three.

“We all came here today with a dream and we have done it,” said Hardie. Slot made 10 changes from the side that thrashed Tottenham 4-0 on Thursday to reach the League Cup final.

Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo were among those left completely out the squad, but Liverpool still started with Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa in attack.

Yet, the Reds’ fringe players did little to make their case for more playing time as they succumbed to one of the FA Cup’s great shocks.

“We were not having a very good day. A result like this is the outcome,” said Slot.

“I can’t say the boys didn’t fight, both teams barely created a chance and then it was a penalty. In a game like this, it is up to one moment. That moment was for them and they deserve it.”

Hardie kept his cool to drill home the penalty after Harvey Elliott handled Darko Gyabi’s flick on 53 minutes.

Moments later it needed a fine save from Caoimhin Kelleher to deny Hardie a second.

Slot threw on Darwin Nunez to add more firepower to the forward line, but Plymouth stood strong thanks to a pair of stunning late saves from Connor Hazard.

Jota’s strike that was headed for the top corner was clawed away by the Northern Ireland international before he tipped over Nunez’s header deep into nine minutes of stoppage time.

“I’m speechless, and normally they tell me I’m eloquent! It’s a big moment, day for us,” said Plymouth boss Miron Muslic, who replaced the sacked Wayne Rooney last month.

“It’s a magical day for us. I told the lads in the locker room to enjoy it.”

    SLOT SHOCK

Liverpool boss Arne Slot said his side’s shock FA Cup exit to second-tier Plymouth was a setback after a near flawless start to his reign in charge.

The Reds had been on course for a quadruple of trophies before they travelled to Argyle, who sit bottom of the Championship, but came unstuck at Home Park as Slot paid a heavy price for making wholesale changes.

The Dutchman retained only goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher from the side that thrashed Tottenham 4-0 on Thursday to reach the League Cup final and left Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk out of his a squad entirely.

The Premier League leaders should still have had enough to progress as Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa started up front, while Darwin Nunez was introduced in a bid rescue the game in the second half.

“We were not having a very good day. A result like this is the outcome,” said Slot.

“It hurts everyone that is involved with Liverpool – fans, me players. We were all wanting to be in this competition for as long as possible and when you go out in the second possible game, that’s a setback.”

The game was decided by Ryan Hardie’s penalty eight minutes into the second half after Harvey Elliott handled inside the box.

Diogo Jota and Nunez forced Conor Hazard into late saves but Plymouth held out for one of the great all-time FA Cup upsets.

“I can’t say the boys didn’t fight, both teams barely created a chance and then it was a penalty. In a game like this, it is up to one moment. That moment was for them and they deserve it,” added Slot.

“I think they were able to do better but it’s a system and a way of playing which is hard to create against. I wasn’t surprised. When we had the ball they were really aggressive.

“Not easy to create especially if a team has not played together all the time. It hurts everyone. We were all wanting to be in this competition for as long as possible.

“They kept on fighting until the last second, it wasn’t a work rate problem but they couldn’t find chances. We have to be more creative.”

    NACHOS AND FANTA

Plymouth’s “boring” boss Miron Muslic celebrated his side’s stunning FA Cup humiliation of Liverpool by “eating some nachos and drinking a Fanta”.

Ryan Hardie’s second-half penalty gave the Championship’s bottom club an astonishing 1-0 victory over the Premier League leaders at Home Park on Sunday.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot named a reserve team for the fourth round tie, resting stars including Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

Plymouth took full advantage to end Liverpool’s quadruple bid with one of the FA Cup’s more memorable giant-killings.

But the low-key Muslic opted against celebrating with alcohol. “Normally I’m very good in my words and eloquent, but I’m a little bit speechless,” said Muslic, who succeeded the sacked Wayne Rooney as Pilgrims manager in January.

“It’s a day for Argyle, a day for Plymouth, a day for the ‘Green Army’. They deserve it and I want them to give it celebrations their all.

“I will go home and re-watch the game, eat some Nachos and drink a Fanta. It’s very boring for me.”

Masterminding a famous victory over Liverpool while fighting to haul Plymouth off the bottom of the Championship was no hardship for Muslic, who was a refugee from war-torn Bosnia as a child.

Muslic was forced to move to Austria aged nine, escaping his home town of Bihac after it fell under siege by Serbian forces in 1992.

“I’m very emotional because I realised the task and the opponent. It’s the biggest moment so far in my coaching career, no doubt, because it’s the FA Cup and Liverpool,” he said.

“But the biggest moment will be staying up in the Championship. This is my goal, this is what I have in my mind and my soul.”

Plymouth had already beaten Premier League side Brentford in the third round, but their victory against West Brom last weekend was their first in the league since November.

They subdued Liverpool’s understudies with a gritty display before snatching the lead when Hardie converted from the spot after Harvey Elliott handled Darko Gyabi’s overhead kick.

Plymouth had to withstand nine minutes of stoppage-time during which Conor Hazard made superb saves to deny Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez.

“We knew we would have a lot of moments to defend and it was a huge task to keep them away from the goal,” Muslic said.

“I watched them a couple of nights ago against Tottenham and the wave of Liverpool was unstoppable.

“Liverpool made changes but I said to the players there was nothing to be afraid of, nothing to lose and everything to win.

“We played like this and we have added another part in the history of Argyle that nobody can take away from us.”

‘Great vindication’: Ange slams doubts over Spurs recruit while detailing last-gasp transfer coup

Ange Postecoglou said Mathys Tel is “100 per cent” committed to Tottenham after the French forward signed on loan despite reportedly rejecting a move to the club earlier in the January transfer window.

Tottenham were busy in the final hours of Monday’s deadline day as they bolstered Postecoglou’s injury-ravaged squad, bringing in Tel and defender Kevin Danso.

Bayern Munich’s Tel, 19, was also linked with Manchester United and Arsenal before opting for Tottenham, who have an option to make the move permanent in the summer transfer window.

Postecoglou, whose team take a 1-0 lead into Thursday’s League Cup semi-final second-leg at Liverpool, told his pre-match press conference that Tel had been right to take his time over such a major decision.

“It’s not so much that he rejected us or rejected anyone else,” said the Spurs manager. “Rightly so he was getting as much information as possible.”

The Australian added: “I had a conversation with him and I guess mine was purely around the football and I think he’ll find a really great place here in terms of where he is in his career.

“He obviously wants to play. We’ve already shown that irrespective of age, he’ll get an opportunity here, and the way we play will suit him.

“Certainly with what we have in the next few months and then more importantly what we’re building beyond, I thought he would be a perfect fit.”

When asked if he felt the France under-21 international was fully committed to Spurs, Postecoglou said: “Yes, 100 per cent. I am more than 100 per cent sure because he took so much time, was so diligent about finding out everything when he made a decision that it’s us.

“He obviously had options and that sort of gave me even more confidence that we are getting the right kind of mentality, the right kind of player.

“He is very ambitious. He’s got a great deal of self-belief and self-confidence. He feels he can reach the top of the game and he has chosen us, which is a great vindication of what we are doing.”

Tel and Danso will both be available for Thursday’s match at Anfield, but Micky van de Ven and fellow centre-back Cristian Romero are set to miss out, with Postecoglou taking a “conservative” approach after the duo’s injury absences.

Tottenham are one match away from a League Cup final at Wembley as they seek to end a trophy drought that stretches back to 2008.

Former Celtic boss Postecoglou, in his second season at Tottenham, put himself under pressure earlier in the campaign when he said he “always wins things in my second year”.

But he said Premier League leaders and League Cup holders Liverpool would also be feeling the pressure.

“I don’t think Liverpool will be any less anxious than us about the fixture,” he said. “You’re in a semi-final, particularly a second leg and it’s still very tight.

“It’s a big game for both clubs so you recognise that, you embrace that but ultimately if you want to be successful these are the games you want to be involved in.”

Ange sat on the brink of PL ruin. One $90m phone call could flip familiar Spurs script

Ange Postecoglou’s job is on the line, there’s no two ways about it — but his role in securing the signature of Mathys Tel proves to be a pivotal moment in his Tottenham tenure.

Get all the latest football news, highlights and analysis delivered straight to your inbox with Fox Sports Sportmail. Sign up now!!!

The 19-year-old was desperate for game time after playing limited minutes for Bayern Munich this season and it was Spurs, alongside Manchester United and Chelsea vying for his signature.

Tottenham officials agreed a $120m AUD fee to sign Tel, but after chairman Daniel Levy flew to Munich to pitch his vision to the young gun, he baulked and declined the move.

    That’s where Postecoglou stepped in.

The Australian picked up the phone and called Tel, offering his own view of the path forward and exactly where he saw the rising star fitting in his side.

Suddenly, Tel had a change of heart. Moving quickly, he travelled to London to initially sign on loan before he was convinced to insert a $90m AUD buy option in his contract, for a potential six-year deal.

His conversation with the former Celtic boss was a clear turning point, and that sequence of events sums up the situation Postecoglou finds himself precariously placed in.

“Remember on Friday, Spurs agreed a permanent deal with Bayern Munich but the player said he didn’t want the move and preferred a move to Arsenal, Aston Villa or Manchester United,” Sky Sports News’ Dharmesh Sheth said.

“They didn’t peruse the move. But Ange Postecoglou got on the phone, spoke to Tel personally and convinced him Spurs were the place to be.”

Multiple reports over Postecoglou’s future in north London have not been able to produce a consensus, with some putting the Australian on the brink, and others saying he’s safe for the foreseeable future.

Postecoglou himself admitted in January “I reckon there is probably a fair chunk that will say no” when asked if he will be Tottenham manager beyond the next three weeks.

However, Spurs’ Tel saga — specifically the way it ended — is suggestive of a slightly more secure future for Postecoglou than some have predicted.

Levy turned to Postecoglou in an attempt to try and finish the job he was unable to complete, while also allowing him to sign other players during his stint as manager.

Premier League legend Gary Neville said that Tel had made a good decision to join Spurs, with Postecoglou’s philosophy part of the reason.

“Tottenham are a huge draw, the stadium and the training ground – and the manager with his style of football. It’s a thrilling style that creates chances,” Sky Sports’ Neville said.

“I’m glad Tel is going there after flirting with a couple of other clubs. Tel will improve Spurs.

“They have a big couple of weeks coming up. Sometimes players like the idea of playing for a club but the important thing is to play football. That’s what Tottenham can provide him.

“They are an amazing football club with an amazing fanbase and they have some great games coming up that he can contribute in.”

Postecoglou being handed the keys to the Tel transfer, and personally speaking to the young gun in a bid to change his mind, hints at a manager who’s been backed by the club for its next phase — not one who is being sacked imminently.

Even so, managing under the rule of Levy comes with an ominous history that Postecoglou will hope his new signings can help him defy.

Sam Kerr’s criminal trial gets underway | 01:34

Levy has been in charge at Tottenham since ENIC’s takeover in 2001, winning one League Cup in 2008 during his tenure as the longest current serving chairman.

During his 24 years, he’s sacked and hired 16 managers.

Postecoglou is just the latest in a long line of mentors who have failed to deliver without the significant financial investment to compete with the Premier League’s heavyweights.

Yet he was still able to convince one of the world’s brightest talents to join him in North London, and the chairman was not.

But should Spurs’ struggles continue to close out the 2024/25 season, it will be Postecoglou who is thrown out the door — not Levy, who refuses to listen to fan’s criticisms.

Levy watched on as Postecoglou struggled to field a starting eleven in recent weeks, with injuries tallying almost every game.

Fans have protested openly against the club’s ownership in recent weeks, even staging a mass event at the Tottenham club shop to try and enact change.

However, Levy has previously said that he doesn’t listen to criticism from the club’s faithful, with former Premier League striker Chris Sutton questioning the chairman.

“Daniel Levy is such a powerful figure – he wants to win trophies, but that’s not his primary objective, he wants to make money and that’s why Tottenham fans are angry,” he said on BBC.

“But, does Daniel Levy listen to anybody? He’s a stubborn so and so, we can talk as much as we like about it but he’s such a powerful figure – what is going to change?

“You can have your banners up, you can sing Levy out – but is he really going to listen to that?”

While Levy has been the focal point of fans’ woes, former Manchester United scout Mick Brown explained prior to deadline day that Postecoglou’s position was shaping as a familiar story.

“It’s mapping out at Tottenham as it often has done over the years,” he said to Football Insider.

Mathys Tel (R) will join Spurs.Source: Getty Images

“The manager of the time needs players, it gets to a point where the chairman is accused of keeping his hands in his pockets, he starts getting pressure from the fans, and he sacks the manager.

“He’s sacked 15 managers during his time there. It’s ‘watch this space’ at Tottenham at the moment.

“They’ve been down this road before.

“Chairmen, particularly Daniel Levy, don’t like pressure from the fans so they react and make a decision. That’s not my opinion, it’s a fact, it’s history.”

However, Tottenham’s pair of signings could be seen as a renewed show of faith in Postecoglou.

Last month, the club was in freefall with losses in the league piling up each week, while Levy’s pursestrings remained largely tightened.

But a pressure-relieving 0-2 away win over Brentford on the weekend, followed by two key coups late in the transfer window have offered new hope for Postecoglou’s future at the club.

Alongside Tel, Lens centre back Kevin Danso has also joined the club in a timely boost for the Australian’s injury-ravaged side.

Even so it wasn’t all good news in the market for Postecoglou, he was desperate to sign a second centre back, with Chelsea’s Axel Disasi snubbing Spurs in favour of Aston Villa.

AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori also rejected the club’s approach, while Crystal Palace declined a $140m AUD bid for England representative Marc Guehi.

The Guehi move in particular highlighted the difference between Spurs and other heavyweights, refusing to up their offer to secure a player who has been a proven Premier League performer.

Spurs still sit in 14th in the Premier League, losing four-straight games before breaking that streak against Brentford.

It is therefore likely that results in a trio of cup competitions, the Europe League, Carabao Cup and the FA Cup, will be pivotal in Postecoglou surviving the 2024/25 season.

    Kerr’s alleged racial harassment shown | 00:50

Spurs have a 1-0 lead after the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi finals, with the second clash with Liverpool scheduled for Friday morning.

The recent return of Micky van de Ven proves crucial for Spurs, but the likes of Christian Romero, Dominic Solanke, James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario, among others, still sidelined.

Postecoglou will be desperate for Tel and Danso to hit the ground running in the hopes of helping Tottenham delve deeper into their cup campaigns.

The equation is simple for Postecoglou — win silverware and he will likely keep his job.

But the fact that he is still here to hold onto that hope represents an uptick in fortunes for a manager who, just last month, was struggling to field an XI in what some where billing as a relegation fight.

Ange under fire after disastrous PL loss — but Tottenham fans are raging at another Spurs target

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou said it is his responsibility to turn around a miserable Premier League season after a 3-2 defeat to Everton on Sunday (Monday AEDT), which helped the Toffees pull clear of the relegation zone.

Previously goal-shy Everton tore through Spurs’ under-strength backline to net three times before the break through Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Iliman Ndiaye and an Archie Gray own goal.

A first win in seven league games takes David Moyes’ men four points clear of the bottom three.

Tottenham’s 12th Premier League defeat of the season leaves them just four points above Everton in 15th and ramps up the pressure on manager Postecoglou.

However, it was chairman Daniel Levy, not the Australian, who felt the fury of the travelling support as they chanted for change at the top of the club.

“This is not about me, but what is about me is I have a responsibility to the players I do have. For me to focus on anything else is abstaining from the responsibility I do have,” said Postecoglou, who was without 10 first-team regulars due to injury.

Everton did bite the bullet to sack Sean Dyche earlier this month and it was like the Goodison days of old for Moyes as he enjoyed a first win of his second spell in charge.

“Really pleased we could give everyone something to shout about,” said Moyes. “We played ever so well in the first half, scored three and could have scored more.”

Ange Postecoglou (R) consoles Archie Gray after defeat at Goodison Park.Source: AFP

Moyes’ homecoming fell flat in a 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa in midweek, after which the former Manchester United boss said he was aware of the task he faces to preserve Premier League status due to a lack of firepower.

Calvert-Lewin had not scored since September but did not look like a striker short on confidence as he turned Gray and Lucas Bergvall before firing in the opening goal on 13 minutes.

To compound the absence of first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and three of Postecoglou’s preferred back four in Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie, Tottenham were also without club record signing Dominic Solanke.

Captain Son Heung-min stepped in to start as a makeshift centre-forward and should have levelled when he shot too close to Jordan Pickford from Dejan Kulusevski’s cross.

But Tottenham looked likely to concede every time Everton sprang out on the counter-attack.

Calvert-Lewin should have had a second but for a heavy touch that allowed Antonin Kinsky to block before the Czech goalkeeper turned Orel Mangala’s effort onto the post.

David Moyes applauds Toffees fans after Everton beat Tottenham.Source: AFP

Everton had scored just 15 goals in 20 league games prior to kick-off, going goalless in nine of their last 11.

What little inspiration there has been from the Toffees this season has come from Ndiaye.

The Senegal international produced a moment of magic to double the lead as he skipped past the statuesque Radu Dragusin before slotting high past Kinsky.

Gray’s own goal compounded a terrible first 45 minutes for the visitors as their frailty from set-pieces was again exposed when the 18-year-old could only turn Calvert-Lewin’s flick into his own net.

Kulusevski’s classy chip over three scrambling Everton defenders pulled a goal back before Richarlison turned home at the back post in stoppage time.

Postecoglou’s men remain alive in three cup competitions, but Levy has a decision to make on whether the quest for a first trophy since 2008 would be better served by a change of manager.

“We’re still in all four competitions. Our league position is not great to say the least but eventually our players will come back. Significant talent will come back,” added Postecoglou.

“I’ve got great motivation to get through this so when we do get our players back we can get something significant out of our season.”

Dismal Spurs survive huge scare against ‘part-time’ team; Utd stun Arsenal in fiery clash — FA Wrap

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham needed extra time before seeing off non-league Tamworth 3-0 in their FA Cup clash on Monday morning (AEDT).

Tottenham, currently 12th in the Premier League, are 96 places above Tamworth, who sit 16th in the fifth-tier National League.

The supposed gap in quality was rarely apparent as Tottenham’s dismal display took them to the brink of a historic humiliation.

A part-time team whose players work day jobs alongside their football careers, Tamworth matched their highly-paid and supposedly superior opponents for long periods on the Lamb Ground’s sloping artificial pitch.

They should have caused one of the FA Cup’s greatest upsets in normal time but their missed chances proved crucial.

Nathan Tshikuna’s extra-time own goal and late strikes from Dejan Kulusevski and Brennan Johnson sent Tottenham into the fourth round.

Tottenham last won a major trophy in 2008, but the under-fire boss Ange Postecoglou boasts he always wins silverware in his second season at a club.

Having beaten Liverpool 1-0 in the League Cup semi-final first leg on Wednesday, Tottenham remain in contention for a domestic cup double despite a troubled season.

“They made it hard for us, with the surface it was about us staying calm and being persistent. In the end, we got the job done,” said Postecoglou, whose team travel to Aston Villa in the fourth round.

    MAN UTD PROGRESS

Ten-man Manchester United beat Arsenal 5-3 on penalties after a dramatic 1-1 draw in the FA Cup third round.

Defeated 2-0 by Arsenal in the Premier League in December, FA Cup holders United exacted revenge on their return to the Emirates Stadium to extend their revival after last weekend’s impressive draw at Liverpool.

Ruben Amorim’s troubled side took the lead through Bruno Fernandes, who smashed a superb strike into the far corner from the edge of the area in the 52nd minute.

United defender Diogo Dalot was sent off for a second booking after fouling Mikel Merino nine minutes later.

Gabriel Magalhaes grabbed Arsenal’s equaliser in the 63rd minute, the Brazilian defender swivelling to hit a low shot that took a hefty deflection off Matthijs de Ligt.

But Arsenal wasted a golden opportunity to take the lead when Harry Maguire’s soft challenge on Kai Havertz was ruled a penalty.

The furious United defender and teammate Manuel Ugarte were involved in a melee with several Arsenal players before Altay Bayindir saved Martin Odegaard’s spot-kick.

Havertz missed a host of chances to win it and the German was culpable again in the shootout as his effort was saved by Bayindir, setting up the much-maligned Joshua Zirkzee to stroke home the decisive kick.

“We deserved to pass through this round because we all suffered together and showed character,” said Amorim, whose side host Leicester in the fourth round.

“A few weeks ago Joshua was in a difficult moment, now he was a game-changer. Life has these beautiful things.” It was another painful result for Arsenal after Tuesday’s 2-0 home defeat against Newcastle in the League Cup semi-final first leg and last weekend’s damaging league draw at Brighton.

“In a thousand games like this you lose one,” said Gunners boss Mikel Arteta, who hasn’t won a trophy since 2020.

“It’s unbelievable. We deserved to win the game by a mile. But the reality is we are out and the only thing that’s going to be judged is that.”

Liverpool powered seven points clear at the top of the Premier League as the title favourites survived a scare in their 3-1 win against Leicester, while Bruno Fernandes was sent off in Manchester United’s dismal 2-0 defeat at lowly Wolves.

Meanwhile, Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs copped another loss, 1-0 to Nottingham Forest.

Erling Haaland missed a penalty as crisis-torn Manchester City failed to end their dismal run with a 1-1 draw against Everton, but it was United’s travails and Liverpool’s remarkable run that took centre-stage on Thursday.

Arne Slot’s side were shocked by Jordan Ayew’s early strike at Anfield, but the leaders recovered their composure to equalise just before the interval through Cody Gakpo.

England midfielder Jones marked his 100th top-flight appearance with the second goal soon after half-time.

Mohamed Salah’s 19th goal this term wrapped up Liverpool’s 11th win in their last 13 games in all competitions.

“We created enough, but because we went 1-0 down it was a game,” Liverpool manager Slot said.

Liverpool’s comeback lifted them well clear of second-placed Chelsea, who were defeated 2-1 by Fulham earlier in the day.

United suffered a third successive loss in all competitions to leave new boss Ruben Amorim with five defeats in his first 10 games.

Fernandes was dismissed two minutes into the second half at Molineux for a second bookable offence.

United’s 10 men cracked in the 58th minute when Matheus Cunha’s corner went straight in as goalkeeper Andre Onana flapped under pressure.

Hwang Hee-chan compounded Amorim’s misery when he tapped in with just seconds left.

Losing to fourth-bottom Wolves was another bitter blow for United, who endured a humiliating 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth at Old Trafford last weekend after losing 4-3 in the League Cup at Tottenham.

With his team marooned in 14th place — just eight points above the relegation zone — Amorim’s woes might not be over, with United facing in-form Newcastle on Monday before travelling to Liverpool in their first game of 2025.

“It’s so tough to win games in this league with 11 men. With 10 men, it’s more difficult,” Amorim said.

Champions Manchester City have just one victory in their last 13 games in all competitions as their Christmas schedule started in disappointing fashion.

Bernardo Silva put City in front early on before Iliman Ndiaye salvaged a point for Everton.

Seven minutes into the second half, Haaland had the chance to end his longest goal drought at the Etihad but Jordan Pickford denied him.

City are languishing in seventh place and sit five points adrift of the top four, with their astonishing decline showing no sign of ending.

“Of course we need results and we didn’t get it. The team played really good again in all departments and unfortunately could not win,” said City boss Pep Guardiola.

At Stamford Bridge, second-placed Chelsea were stunned by Fulham’s late fightback for a 2-1 win in a dramatic west London derby.

It was Chelsea’s first home defeat against Fulham since 1979. Cole Palmer put Chelsea ahead after 16 minutes, the England forward drilling home from the edge of the area after weaving through the Fulham defence in dazzling style.

But Fulham levelled with eight minutes left when Antonee Robinson’s cross was headed down by Timothy Castagne and Harry Wilson nodded in from close range.

Chelsea were furious, claiming Alex Iwobi had fouled Pedro Neto in the build-up to the goal.

But there was worse to come for the Blues in stoppage-time when Rodrigo Muniz converted Sasa Lukic’s pass with a clinical strike.

Chelsea are four points behind leaders Liverpool, who have two games in hand and host Leicester later on Thursday.

Nottingham Forest climbed to third place after a 1-0 win against sputtering Tottenham at the City Ground.

Forest went ahead in the 28th minute when Anthony Elanga raced onto Morgan Gibbs-White’s pass and stroke a composed finish past Fraser Forster.

Forest’s fourth successive win was sweet revenge for boss Nuno Espirito Santo, whose former club Tottenham had Djed Spence sent off in the closing moments for a second booking.

Tottenham are stuck in 11th as the pressure mounts on boss Ange Postecoglou. Newcastle swatted aside 10-man Aston Villa 3-0, moving up to fifth place after winning three consecutive league games for the first time since 2023.

Jarrod Bowen’s 59th-minute goal gave West Ham a 1-0 win at bottom of the table Southampton after the visitors saw Guido Rodriguez’s red card overturned by VAR.

It was a frustrating start for new Saints boss Ivan Juric, who has replaced the sacked Russell Martin.

Bournemouth and Crystal Palace shared a goalless draw at the Vitality Stadium.

‘Excited and optimistic’: Spurs legend all in on Ange… but not everyone’s convinced

Ange Postecoglou’s position as Spurs coach is under fire amid a string of poor results but a club legend has leapt to his defence, calling on Tottenham officials to ”stick with him”.

Spurs currently sit in 10th in the Premier League, demolishing Southampton 5-0 in their latest outing. But before that came disappointing defeats to Chelsea and Bournemouth.

While Tottenham were also able to batter reigning champions Manchester City on November 24, their previous encounter was a 2-1 defeat to relegation candidates Ipswich Town.

Throw in Europe League draws against Rangers and Roma — and it’s fair to say it’s been a rollercoaster for Postecoglou and Spurs.

The Tottenham board will reportedly stick solid with Postecoglou for the remainder of the season, but if his side’s inconsistent performances continue the Australian’s tenure could come under the microscope.

Injuries and suspensions have also hampered Spurs, with Guglielmo Vicario, Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma, Heung-Min Son, Destiny Udogie, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven spending time sidelined in recent weeks.

All seven players have been regular fixtures in Postecoglou’s starting sides this year.

So with pressure mounting to turn his club’s fortunes around, former striker Teddy Sheringham has urged the board to put their faith in the former Celtic boss.

He pointed to the exciting style that Postecoglou employs, pressing opposition teams and creating a mountain of goalscoring opportunities with a direct attacking approach.

Only Chelsea have scored more Premier League goals this season, with Spurs netting 36 times. Meanwhile, Tottenham also have the equal second most ‘big chances created’.

“I’m here to back Ange this morning,” Sheringham said on Talk Sport.

“I love what he’s given Tottenham this year. I think over the last four or five years you’ve seen Tottenham under [Jose] Mourinho and [Antonio] Conte make one maybe two chances a game.

“I go to watch Tottenham now and I see them making ten chances in the first 15 minutes.

“I think it’s exciting. I think any team would struggle without their two main centre halves and their main goalkeeper.

“I’m still excited and optimistic for Ange and the way he plays the game and I think they should stick with him.”

However, other pundits and Premier League legends haven’t been so kind, including former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher.

O’Hara specifically took aim at Tottenham’s defensive efforts against Rangers, saying his “patience was wearing thin”.

It’s important to note that Spurs were missing their best two centre backs, starting 18-year-old Archie Gray alongside Radu Drăgușin.

“Ange Postecoglou, mate. I’ve had enough,” O’Hara said.

“You know, we go on and like, oh yeah, the football’s great. Is it? Is it great?

    Ange’s Spurs strike in under 37 seconds | 01:11

“I’m not watching Barcelona. I’m just watching a good team, you know, in moments, have some decent spells, but you know, every team plays good football.

“It’s not like I’m watching Barcelona play, but can’t defend, but when we’ve got the ball, it’s just, you know, it’s brilliant to watch.

“All I’m watching is a Tottenham team that I’ve watched a million times before. Boring. There’s nothing special.”

Carragher’s criticism came after Spurs’ 4-3 loss to Chelsea, with Postecoglou claiming his side “played well” despite departing their home stadium without a single point.

The former England international was of the belief Postecoglou needs to adapt his style of play — or else he faces the sack.

“Ange said how well they played. I can’t imagine any Liverpool manager I played for – and we conceded four in a game – would say in the interview we played well,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

Epic free kick sees draw for Bournemouth | 00:53

“If you play this way you’ll get the result like at Manchester City but you’d also get results like this one where you’re 2-0 up.

“I’ve never got my head around managers saying we play a ‘certain way and we will never change’ – I think it started with Pep Guardiola at Barcelona.

“This idea that wherever they play, they will play their way. But that was the best team I’ve ever seen. Pep Guardiola then had to change his Man City team who were winning the leagues every season, putting centre-backs at fullback. This idea that you can’t change is alien to me.

“The game-state dictates how you play, not all the time but if you go away to a tough away ground you shouldn’t play the same way as you do against a team at the bottom.

“There’s this idea of playing a pure game and the Tottenham fans singing ‘We’ve got our Tottenham back’ but you won’t win anything, you won’t challenge.”

‘Top, top manager’: Ange ploy that shocked Pep as Spurs legends heap praise – UK View

City are in crisis having lost their last five matches across all competitions but this was the first time they have been beaten at home since Brentford defeated them 2-1 in 2022.

Not only were City beaten, they were annihilated.

It was the equal worst loss of Guardiola’s managerial career, and for City fans, it was like a throwback to the old days at Maine Road before Abu Dhabi oil money turned them into a powerhouse.

And it was orchestrated by an Australian who was under their noses for many years.

Postecoglou has taken a liking to Manchester.

Ange reflects on Man City thumping | 01:01

His Spurs routed United 3-0 at Old Trafford earlier this season.

The similarities to his home city of Melbourne with the Northern Quarter’s laneways filled with coffee shops, bars and graffiti art might bring out the best in Postecoglou when he takes his team north, but his time with Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan is the key behind his success in the iconic football city.

The club he guided to the J League title in 2019 are part of the City Football Group and as a result he had access to a treasure trove of tactical information from Manchester City.

Therefore, there are few Premier League managers who know City as well as Postecoglou, and that was reflected in a series of master strokes to set up arguably the best win of his career.

Before the international break, Tottenham suffered their worst loss of the Australian’s 50 Premier League games in charge with a 2-1 home loss to relegation-threatened Ipswich Town.

Pep: “We have got to fix something” | 01:14

The fans started to turn with a chorus of boos and the pressure began to mount on Postecoglou in the English media, but Saturday’s performance quickly put that talk to bed.

Posteocglou has experienced a rollercoaster relationship with Spurs fans so far, and the victory must have been all the more sweeter given some Tottenham fans hoped their team lost in their previous Premier League meeting with City – which they did 2-0 – to end rivals Arsenal’s hopes of winning the title in the penultimate matchday of last season.

The tale could not have been more different this time around with Postecoglou’s call to return midfielder James Maddison to the starting line-up – in place of the suspended Rodrigo Bentancur – proving pivotal.

“Nobody exemplified the difference between the two sides more than Maddison, who was magnificent on his return to first-team action – in two different phases of play,” PremierLeague.com’s Alex Keble wrote.

Liverpool extend lead in title race! | 02:38

“First, his runs from deep challenged the City defence and led to the opening goal, a superb cross from Dejan Kulusevski that rewarded Ange Postecoglou’s decision to move the Swede back out to the right and accommodate Maddison centrally.”

Tottenham were typically daring as they worked their way through midfield with Maddison’s “left half-space” runs causing havoc.

“Picking Maddison, a player always likely to make those runs, was an attacking risk from Postecoglou that quickly – and persistently – paid off,” Keble wrote.

“After the opener, before which City had raced out of the blocks and put Spurs under pressure, City began to wane in energy and dropped a little deeper.

“This is when Maddison took charge in a second way, coming short to dictate the tempo brilliantly.

Ed Sheeran’s super awkward live TV crash | 00:20

“It was his crisp passing through the lines that pinned Man City; that caused the hesitation that led to City giving the ball away in their own third and Maddison – again running from deep – scoring the second.

“Maddison had 64 touches of the ball and made 45 passes, dictating the tempo centrally and in the final third until City were chasing shadows.”

Maddison’s link up play with Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr as well as striker Dominic Solanke – who regularly dropped back into midfield – overwhelmed the City midfield duo of Gundogan and Bernardo Silva.

Writing for The Times, Martin Samuel said that Postecoglou’s Spurs had dealt with the loss of Harry Kane far better than City were handling the absence of injured Ballon d’Or winner Rodri in defensive midfield.

“For Tottenham fans still smarting at once being described as the Harry Kane team by a certain coach, this win must have felt particularly delicious. At least Kane was among the greatest goalscorers in the modern game. Who wouldn’t miss Kane? City have collapsed deprived of one defensive midfielder. They’ve made Rodri look like Diego Maradona. Who didn’t think they were better than that?” Samuel wrote.

Meanwhile, Kulusevki and Son Heung-min were instrumental out wide.

Writing in the Telegraph, Sam Wallace said that Postecoglou had unlocked City with one particular tactic by his attacking weapons.

“It was a great evening for Ange Postecoglou, under no little pressure himself, who spoke afterwards about ‘doubling down on football principles’ in the face of the many challenges of playing City away. But he did let slip that it had been taking on City down the wings one-on-one where they hoped to profit and so it proved with Kulusevski and Son Heung-min,” Wallace wrote.

Writing in the Guardian, Jamie Jackson said another wide man was used smartly by Postecoglou: goalscorer Pedro Porro.

‘I’ll wait for you in the carpark!’ | 00:19

“The right-back prospered as Ange Postecoglou’s men did all evening: by ransacking the champions who, despite Guardiola’s defiance that he is up for arresting the slide, were clueless, as illustrated by Brennan Johnson’s added-time fourth, when, for a countless time, City fell to the quick break,” Jackson wrote.

“You have to go back to 2006 for the last time City suffered five reverses in a row. That dire run ended after six defeats and do not bet against Guardiola’s iteration matching this – Feyenoord are here on Tuesday – as his famed tactical brain is drawing a blank and he admits to a ‘fragility’.”

While the moves all worked effectively, that style has been commonplace of any Postecoglou side.

What came as a significant sign of growth was Spurs’ ability to sit back and hold firm once they held a sizeable lead despite first choice centre backs Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero being sidelined with injury.

“Following the third goal Spurs held 30 per cent possession and had four shots to Man City’s 13: they sat deep, blocked the middle, dug in brilliantly in a compressed 4-5-1 formation, and even countered to add a fourth,” Keble wrote.

“For that, Postecoglou deserves huge credit. His team have been criticised in the past for failing to shut games down and for playing emotionally when calm heads are needed.

“That is not what happened here.”

Many Tottenham people were over the moon with what they witnessed.

Former Spurs midfielder and manager Tim Sherwood took the opportunity to shame any Tottenham fans that called for Postecoglou’s sacking during the international break, while two-time FA Cup winner with Spurs Graham Roberts posted on X his immense pleasure with what the Australian is bringing to the table.

“I stopped myself from posting last week after the loss to Ipswich but as I keep saying we all need to keep with this manager, he is simply wonderful!” Roberts wrote.

“You can see more than any manager what he is trying to do at this club. A top top manager.”

Tottenham sit sixth on the Premier League table after 12 games, only three points behind third place Chelsea.

Postecoglou’s side have scored more goals than anyone else, have the second best goal difference (14) and only league leaders Liverpool along with Newcastle have conceded on fewer occasions.

They are numbers that show they are on the right track, but a massive run of games leading into Christmas will be a brilliant test across all competitions.

In the league, they face Chelsea and Liverpool in the coming month as well as a quarter final of the Carabao Cup against Manchester United, and Europa League contests against Roma and Rangers.

Postecoglou always wins a trophy in his second year in charge, and those matches will have a big say on whether that trend will continue.

If he can keep pulling the strings like he did against City, breaking Tottenham’s much-discussed trophy drought will surely be on the cards.

Pep Guardiola suffered four consecutive defeats for the first time in his managerial career as Manchester City’s dismal spell hit a new low with a late collapse in their 2-1 loss at Brighton.

With just 12 minutes left, Guardiola’s troubled side were clinging onto the lead given to them by Erling Haaland in the first half.

But they collapsed in the closing stages as Joao Pedro equalised before Matt O’Riley bagged Brighton’s winner seven minutes from full-time.

For the first time in his glittering career as a manager with City, Bayern Munich and Barcelona, Guardiola has been beaten four times in a row.

It was also the first time City had lost four successive games since a run between April and August 2006 under Stuart Pearce.

After exiting the League Cup to Tottenham and suffering a first league loss since December at Bournemouth, City were thrashed 4-1 by Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League in midweek.

The slump continued as they failed to kill off Brighton before the second half implosion that threatens to derail their bid for a fifth successive Premier League title.

Second-placed City are two points behind leaders Liverpool, who can extend that gap to five points if they beat Aston Villa at Anfield later on Saturday.

City have been beset by injury problems, most notably the loss of Ballon d’Or winner Rodri for the rest of the season.

Kevin De Bruyne, Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji were only fit enough for the bench, while Ruben Dias, John Stones, Jeremy Doku and Jack Grealish were absent from the squad.

Guardiola had insisted he would solve City’s problems but he has so far been unable to come up with the answer to their mounting crisis.

City had paid for failing to turn their dominance into more than a one-goal lead against Sporting and profligacy was a problem again on the south coast of England.

    – City in turmoil –

Savinho should have put City ahead when Mateo Kovacic’s pass sent him surging into the Albion area, but the Brazilian’s weak finish allowed Bart Verbruggen to save.

Kovacic was the catalyst when City took the lead in the 23rd minute with a goal equal parts inspiration and perspiration.

The Croatia midfielder’s inch-perfect pass split the Brighton defence but Haaland still had work to do as his initial shot was blocked by Verbruggen, leaving the Norwegian in a race with Jan Paul van Hecke to poke the ball in before it could be cleared.

Haaland’s 15th goal in all competitions this season was only the second time he had netted in his last six league appearances.

Haaland’s 75th league goal since joining City in 2022 was almost followed by the 76th moments later, his low drive repelled by Verbruggen at the near post.

Kovacic’s long-range volley forced another good stop from the increasingly over-worked Verbruggen.

But City fatally dropped their intensity just before half time, allowing Fabian Hurzeler’s side to gain a foothold.

Jack Hinshelwood wasted a golden opportunity to haul Brighton level early in the second half as his close-range header from Pervis Estupinan’s cross was palmed away by Ederson.

Ederson raced off his line to save at Kaoru Mitoma’s feet before Pedro scuffed wide with the goal at his mercy.

Pedro made amends for that miss as the Brazilian punished woeful City defending to equalise with 12 minutes left.

Mitoma was given too much space for a pass into Welbeck in the six-yard box. Rico Lewis’s block-tackle stopped Welbeck shooting but Josko Gvardiol and Matheus Nunes didn’t clear the danger, allowing Pedro to pounce with a close-range strike.

Guardiola slumped into his seat but there was worse to come for the City boss in the 83rd minute.

Pedro slipped his pass through City’s leaky defence and O’Riley timed his run perfectly to clip a composed finish past Ederson from 10 yards to leave the champions in turmoil.

PL title contenders rocked as rival poaches key figure amid rumours of power shift

Arsenal’s sporting director Edu Gaspar resigned on Monday, citing his desire to “pursue a different challenge” after spearheading the Gunners’ revival in recent years.

The former midfielder, who was part of the Arsenal side that last won the Premier League in 2003/04, was installed as the club’s first technical director in 2019.

The 46-year-old played a key role in the appointment of Mikel Arteta as manager later that year.

Reports suggest the Brazilian could be set for a role working for Greek businessman Evangelos Marinakis, who owns Nottingham Forest and Olympiakos.

“This was an incredibly hard decision to make,” Edu said in a statement on Arsenal’s website.

“I’ve loved working with so many great colleagues across our men’s, women’s and academy teams, especially Mikel, who has become a great friend.

“Now it is time to pursue a different challenge. Arsenal will always remain in my heart. I wish the club and its supporters only good things and all the very best.”

Sky Sports have reported that Edu has agreed to a deal in principle with Marinakis, and Arsenal have been left shocked by the move.

The actual details of what role he will be doing for Marinakis are unclear, and a formal deal is still be finalised, but The UK Telegraph have reported that Edu has been targeted as a potential chief executive of the Marinakis group.

He would oversee operations at Forest, Olympiakos and Portuguese club Rio Ave, while Italian club Monza are a target for a fourth club to come under the Marinakis umbrella.

The UK Telegraph have also reported that Marinakis is prepared to at least double the £3 million-a-year salary Edu was earning at Arsenal.

Miguel Delaney, The Independent’s chief football writer, told Sky Sports News that Edu’s decision comes are back room murmurs at the Emirates.

“There have been a few hints about, not necessarily a power struggle at Arsenal, but a reshuffle in the dynamics and people are speculating about whether that has influenced that decision,” Delaney said.

“I think part of it is Edu wanting more power somewhere and the Marinakis group are willing to offer it to him.”

Edu arrived back in London five years ago after spells as sporting director at Corinthians and a similar role with the Brazilian national team.

He oversaw a clear out of ageing stars such as Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to make way for a younger squad that has thrived under Arteta’s leadership, albeit with little silverware to show for it.

Arteta will play a key role in the appointment of Edu’s replacement alongside managing director Richard Garlick and executive Tim Lewis who form the football leadership team at the club.

Arsenal have not won a trophy since lifting the FA Cup in 2020, but finished second to Manchester City in each of the past two Premier League seasons.
