Megastar’s surprise appearance as 21yo’s historic double lifts Man Utd over PL minnows

Rasmus Hojlund made Premier League history as the Manchester United striker’s double ensured his side survived a scare from lowly Luton in their 2-1 win on Sunday.

Hojlund became the youngest player to score in six consecutive Premier League games after netting twice in the first seven minutes at Kenilworth Road.

At 21 years 14 days old, Hojlund surpassed Newcastle midfielder Joe Willock’s previous record set when he was 21 years 272 days old.

After failing to score in his first 14 Premier League appearances following his August move from Atalanta, Hojlund has scored eight times in his last eight games in all competitions.

Hojlund’s brace should have put United in complete control, but Luton fought back impressively as Carlton Morris quickly reduced the deficit.

Erik ten Hag’s side were under siege for spells and wasted several chances to kill off fourth-bottom Luton in a tense finale.

Sixth placed United’s fourth consecutive league victory moved them within five points of fourth placed Aston Villa in the race to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

For long periods during a difficult season, that target has seemed beyond United, but Hojlund’s prolific form has given them renewed hope.

With just 37 seconds gone, Hojlund intercepted Amari’i Bell’s dreadful back pass, rounded keeper Thomas Kaminski and slotted into the empty net.

United’s fastest league goal this season was followed by Hojlund’s second in the seventh minute.

When Alejandro Garnacho smashed a volley towards goal from a United corner, the strike hit Hojlund’s chest and deflected into the net.

Kaminski saved well from Marcus Rashford, who curled narrowly wide moments later as United looked set to run riot.

But Morris gave Luton an unexpected lifeline in the 14th minute when the burly striker headed in from close-range after Tahith Chong’s shot deflected into his path.

Gabriel Osho should have equalised, but the Luton defender headed wide from a corner.

Morris went closer with a thunderous strike that whistled just wide from the edge of the area after Garnacho carelessly lost possession.

Ten Hag replaced Casemiro and Harry Maguire with Jonny Evans and Scott McTominay at halftime in a bid to stem Luton’s momentum.

Despite the change, Luton pummelled United immediately after the break, with Cauley Woodrow and Chong both threatening an equaliser.

Luton never gave up and Barkley was inches away from spoiling Hojlund’s memorable day in stoppage-time when his header grazed the bar.

There was also a surprise appearance at the game, with pop megastar Harry Styles taking in all the action at Kenilworth Road.

Styles sat next to Luton legend Mick Harford for the game, although the three-time Grammy winner has previously claimed he’s a United fan.

Brighton pushed Sheffield United closer to relegation as the Premier League’s bottom club capitulated after Mason Holgate’s dismissal in Sunday’s 5-0 rout at Bramall Lane.

Holgate was sent off early in the first half for the United defender’s ugly foul on Kaoru Mitoma.

Brighton made the most of Holgate’s exit as Facundo Buonanotte and Danny Welbeck struck in quick succession.

Jack Robinson’s second half own goal was followed by Simon Adingra’s late brace, condemning the shambolic Blades to a sixth defeat in their last nine league games.

Chris Wilder’s team are languishing seven points from safety with 13 games left to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.

United’s 65 goals conceded in the Premier League this season are the most ever by a side in their first 25 matches in the competition.

A victory at fellow strugglers Luton last weekend had breathed new life into the Blades’ hopes of avoiding relegation.

Yet they reverted to type with a self-inflicted loss that edged them nearer to the drop.

Brighton were winless in their last six Premier League away matches, but they had won 5-2 at Bramall Lane in the FA Cup fourth round in January and ended their barren stretch on their return to Yorkshire.

United threatened a goal inside two minutes when James McAtee picked out Jayden Bogle on the edge of the area and his drive was pushed away by Bart Verbruggen.

That proved a crucial moment as Brighton took control.

Wilder’s men were reduced to 10 men in the 13th minute when Holgate’s studs-up high challenge left Mitoma writhing in pain.

Holgate was initially booked but referee Stuart Attwell upgraded his decision to red card after using the pitchside monitor to review the on-loan Everton right-back’s crude foul.

Brighton needed just seven minutes to make their numerical advantage count. United complained that Brighton should not have been given as a corner because the ball appeared to come off Welbeck last.

From the controversial set-piece, Buonanotte made the Blades pay as he scrambled his effort over the line just before it was hacked clear.

Brighton struck again four minutes later, with former Manchester United forward Welbeck lashing high into the net from close-range after Wes Foderingham pushed Mitoma’s shot into his path.

Wilder was left cursing his luck when Ben Osborn’s close-range volley was ruled out by VAR for a tight offside call against the defender.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side wrapped up their second league win of 2024 in the 75th minute when Robinson turned Mitoma’s cross into his own net.

Adingra rubbed salt into United’s wounds with a clinical volley from 10 yards in the 78th minute.

There was still time for Adingra’s deflected effort to loop in over Foderingham in the 85th minute as United surrendered without a fight.

Throughout the clash in N17, Tottenham fans were unhappy with what they deemed to be time-wasting from the shot-stopper.

But after the game Foderingham posted on Instagram about the abuse he received.

He wrote: “I don’t mind opposition fans calling me every name under the sun.

“But be easy with the racism and family threats. Think before you type.”

“The club will now work with relevant bodies to investigate and support Wes. There is no room for racism in our game.”

A Tottenham statement added: “We are disgusted to hear of racist, abusive and threatening messages sent to Wes Foderingham following yesterday’s match.

“The club stands firmly against all forms of discrimination and will cooperate fully with Sheffield United and the relevant bodies in their investigations.

“We shall not hesitate in taking the strongest possible action, including club bans, against any so-called fan found responsible.”

Reds ‘monster’ leaves PL ‘speechless’ in 10-man stunner; red card furore erupts: Wrap

Darwin Nunez came off the bench to score twice in the final 10 minutes as 10-man Liverpool came from a goal down to stun Newcastle 2-1 at St. James’ Park on Sunday.

Anthony Gordon had pounced on a Trent Alexander-Arnold mistake to put the Magpies in front before Virgil van Dijk was sent off for bringing down Alexander Isak inside half an hour.

But Newcastle failed to make the man advantage count and were punished when Nunez produced two moments of rare quality so far in his Liverpool career to turn the game on its head.

“With 10 men in my history, 1,000 games (as a manager), I have never had something like that. At Newcastle, in this stadium with that atmosphere, it is crazy,” said Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool spent a club-record £85 million ($107 million) on Nunez just over a year ago, but the Uruguayan has found himself behind Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo in the battle to be Klopp’s preferred number nine early in the season.

Nunez was unleashed from the bench 13 minutes from time and made the most of his opportunity as he was twice released behind the Newcastle defence and kept his nerve to fire low and hard beyond Nick Pope.

“We calmed the game down and brought on Darwin. He was obviously fired up from not starting,” added Klopp.

“It’s clear he’s not happy but it’s early in the season, we need to find stability and results.

“We need to find a way of playing. This is a new team with new key players. It needs time. He scores two goals and can’t get the smile off his face.”

Victory keeps Liverpool two points behind leaders Manchester City and lays down an early-season marker after Newcastle usurped the Reds to secure Champions League football last season.

“We should have put the game to bed and that’s the thing we are kicking ourselves about,” said Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.

    – Alexander-Arnold escapes early red –

Liverpool were lucky not to be a man down after just six minutes. Alexander-Arnold had already been booked for throwing the ball away when he pulled down Gordon as the Newcastle man tore down the left wing.

But to the astonishment of the home crowd and Newcastle bench, referee John Brooks did not produce a second yellow card.

“For me, yes (it’s a red card),” Howe told Sky Sports. “You don’t want to see a player sent off but, for me, that’s a clear red card.

“Two moments that are key in the game and the referee got the first one wrong. We’re not looking at that as the reason we didn’t win the game – that has to fall on our laps.”

Joe Gomez was sent out by Klopp to warm up with one eye on replacing Alexander-Arnold to keep him out of further trouble.

The Liverpool boss might have wished he had made that change as Alexander-Arnold’s failure to control Mohamed Salah’s pass allowed Gordon to run clear on goal and score just his second Newcastle goal since a £45 million move from Everton in January.

Things went from bad to worse for the Reds when Brooks did produce a red card, Van Dijk’s first of his Liverpool career, on 28 minutes.

The Liverpool captain was deemed to have denied a clear goalscoring opportunity when he kicked through Isak on the edge of the area.

Only some brilliance from Alisson Becker kept Liverpool in the game before half-time as the Brazilian turned Miguel Almiron’s fiercely struck volley onto the crossbar.

Rubiales suspended by FIFA after kiss | 00:33

Almiron came even closer after the break as some mesmeric wing play scythed through the Liverpool defence, only for his shot to come back off the post.

But Newcastle were made to pay for not adding to their lead in an incredible finale.

Sven Botman failed to deal with Jota’s ball forward and Nunez drilled a shot into the far corner nine minutes from time.

Salah had been kept largely quiet in the week he was linked with joining the stars leaving European football for Saudi Arabia.

But the Egyptian produced three minutes into stoppage time when his pass put Nunez in the clear once more to deliver the most telling goal of his Liverpool career to date.

Rodri strikes late as Man City extend perfect start

Manchester City extended their perfect start to the Premier League season as Rodri sealed a dramatic 2-1 win against Sheffield United after Erling Haaland scored once and missed a penalty for the champions on Sunday.

Haaland drove a first half spot-kick against the post before his header put City in front after the break at Bramall Lane.

City were in danger of squandering the points when Jayden Bogle equalised against the run of play with just five minutes left.

But Rodri saved City with a blistering strike three minutes later as Pep Guardiola’s side moved to the top of the table after a third successive victory.

City’s latest success was achieved without Guardiola, who was watching on television while he recuperates after back surgery in Barcelona.

The City boss was in constant contact with his assistant Juanma Lillo, who took the reins at Bramall Lane and will also be in charge for the champions’ clash with Fulham on Saturday.

Guardiola’s rehabilitation will have been aided by the knowledge that City can thrive in his absence.

Although he achieved it from afar, it was a landmark victory for Guardiola, who now has 200 league wins with City in just 269 games, beating the previous Premier League record of 326 matches to reach that milestone set by Jose Mourinho in 2020.

“We played really well, especially bearing in mind how difficult games like these are,” Lillo said.

“Thirty shots is a lot, but not being able to finish just at the right time made it more difficult.”

For the first time since 2016, City have opened a season with three consecutive league wins in an ominous statement to their title rivals that last season’s treble triumph has not sated their appetite for success.

“Mentally this team have had seven years of preparation and they are very impressive,” Lillo said.

“It is better to pick up these points but it is still early. It is going to be a really tough battle this season.”

City should have gone ahead in the 36th minute when Julian Alvarez’s cross was blocked by John Egan’s out-stretched arm.

But Haaland hammered his penalty against the post. The Norwegian stood with a look of disbelief etched on his face as the ball rebounded to safety.

It was Haaland’s first penalty miss in the Premier League after scoring his previous seven.

When Haaland steered another good chance wide from Kyle Walker’s cross, it looked like a day to forget for the striker.

Arsenal shockingly drop points at home | 00:43

    – Rodri to rescue –

Haaland was denied again from Mateo Kovacic’s pass, his close-range chip clawed away by Wes Foderingham.

But Haaland finally rewarded City’s territorial dominance in the 63rd minute, rising above Jack Robinson at the far post to head his third goal this season from Jack Grealish’s teasing cross.

City were cruising but Blades substitute Bogle snatched a shock equaliser in the 85th minute.

Walker was guilty of a needless backheel inside his own area, prolonging a United attack that climaxed with Bogle’s fierce shot deflecting in off Nathan Ake.

City responded superbly and regained the lead three minutes later when Rodri lashed into the top corner from 12 yards after Walker redeemed himself by winning back possession outside the United area.

Aston Villa powered to a 3-1 win at Burnley as Matty Cash’s double extended a remarkable goal spree from Unai Emery’s side.

After losing 5-1 at Newcastle in their season opener, Villa had rebounded by routing Everton 4-0 and crushing Hibernian 5-0.

John McGinn’s eighth minute pass found Ollie Watkins and his cross was perfectly weighted for Cash to finish with aplomb from close-range.

Cash netted again in the 20th minute, smashing home after a swift exchange of passes with Moussa Diaby.

In the 47th minute, Burnley’s Lyle Foster fired home to become the first South African to score a Premier League goal since Steven Pienaar netted for Everton in 2013.

But Diaby ended Burnley’s hopes in the 61st minute with a clinical finish.

Kiwi’s last-gasp goal as minnows’ gun continues freak scoring run: PL Wrap

Chris Wood clinched Nottingham Forest’s first Premier League win this season as the New Zealand striker’s last-gasp header sealed a 2-1 win against Sheffield United on Friday.

Wood netted in the 89th minute at the City Ground to ensure Forest bounced back from their 2-1 defeat at Arsenal in their season opener last weekend.

Steve Cooper’s side had taken the lead early in the first half thanks to Taiwo Awoniyi’s header.

Gustavo Hamer equalised before the break on his Blades debut. The midfielder arrived last week from second tier Coventry.

Wood’s dramatic late contribution made it successive defeats for United on their return to the top-flight after last season’s promotion as Championship runners-up.

The Blades lost 1-0 at home to Crystal Palace last weekend.

Dating back to last season, Forest have won four in a row at the City Ground as a top-flight side for the first time since 1996.

Awoniyi, Forest’s top scorer from last season, repaid Cooper’s faith after being restored to the starting line-up.

He is just the second Forest player to score in six successive games in the Premier League after Stan Collymore in 1995.

In the first top-flight meeting between these sides since the maiden Premier League season in 1992-93, Forest took just three minutes to seize the initiative.

Serge Aurier’s cross was perfectly placed for Awoniyi to muscle between two defenders and power a bullet header past United keeper Wes Foderingham.

In the last 15 years, only two players other than Awoniyi have scored six of their club’s goals in a row — Christian Benteke for Aston Villa in 2015 and Erling Haaland for Manchester City last season.

Morgan Gibbs-White’s low drive from the edge of the area was Forest by Foderingham as Forest poured forward in search of a second goal.

Awoniyi and Aurier threatened again, with the Nigeria forward only denied another goal by Anel Ahmedhodzic’s last-ditch clearance.

After a wretched start, United finally mustered a shot when Vini Souza’s 25-yard curler drew a good save from Matt Turner.

Turner had to save again when John Egan scuffed a close-range effort goalwards from Hamer’s corner.

The Blades’ pressure was rewarded in the 48th minute as Hamer curled a sublime finish into the far corner from the edge of the area.

Awoniyi thought he had restored Forest’s lead but his dinked finish was disallowed for off-side.

Willy Boly’s close-range strike from a corner was repelled by Foderingham before Turner came to Forest’s rescue with a good save from Beni Traore.

Both sides pushed hard for the winner but it was Forest who hit the jackpot in the 89th minute.

Once again it was Aurier who provided the assist with a telling cross that Wood flicked past Foderingham to the delight of the raucous City Ground crowd.
