World Cup hero gone, two shock returns and six rookies as Popovic names Socceroos squad

Socceroos coach Tony Popovic has made 10 changes to his squad for two must win World Cup qualifiers this month against Indonesia and China, headlined by the omission of veteran striker Mitch Duke.

The extended 26-player squad features six uncapped players in Scotland based midfielder Nectarios Triantis, Melbourne Victory midfielder Ryan Teague, Melbourne City defender Kai Trewin, Middlesbrough goalkeeper Thomas Glover, fellow shot stopper Paul Izzo and Sydney FC defender Alex Grant. It’s the first time Triantis, Teague, Grant and Trewin have earned a senior national team call-up.

Popovic has also turned to two players, Jason Davidson and Fran Karacic, who haven’t been a part of the Socceroos’ set-up for some time. Davidson, a 33-year-old left back who plays for Panserraikos F.C in the Greek Super League, hasn’t featured for Australia since a friendly against Jordan in 2022. Before that, the 2015 Asian Cup winner’s last appearance was in a World Cup qualifier against Bangladesh in November that year. Karacic’s last involvement for the Socceroos was during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The right back, who now calls NK Lokomotiva in Croatia home, was part of the squad for all four games and featured in the group stage win against Tunisia and the 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the Round of 16.

A raft of injuries to first choice players made picking this squad a tricky task. Goalkeeper Joe Gauci (hip), defenders Hayden Matthews (ankle), Harry Souttar (achilles), and Jordy Bos (hamstring) are all missing while Riley McGree (knock) continues to struggle with his fitness at Middlesbrough. Alessandro Circati is also a long-term absentee as the 21-year-old Parama defender continues to recover from an anterior cruciate ligament tear. The only two bits of good news from the frequent medical reports came in the form of striker Kusini Yengi returning to action for Portsmouth in the Championship three weeks ago after the 26-year-old hurt his knee in the Socceroos last match against Bahrain in late November while giant defender Cameron Burgess has seemingly shrugged off a calf complaint suffered in Ipswich Town’s fifth round FA Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest on March 4.

The rest of the squad is a mix of potential, young stars ready for their chance and one veteran who probably thought his time had passed.

Melbourne Victory’s Daniel Arzani gets another chance to impress after Popovic blasted the talented winger during an interview with reporters in January. The coach said Arzani “wasn’t good enough” when he came into camp in October last year and that his “level was really poor in training.” Arzani, once dubbed “the next big thing” in Australian football, missed selection for the November window and has been left in no doubt as to what Popovic wants to see from him. Marco Tilio’s impressive comeback for Melbourne City from a two-and-a-half-month stint on the sidelines with a hamstring injury has also caught Popovic’s eye. Those two will be fighting to fill the inverted winger role with Ajdin Hrustic not selected. Hrustic has played just 16-minutes for Italian second division side US Salernitana in 2025.

Triantis made himself almost impossible to ignore after a stunning run of form for Hibernian in the Scottish Premier League where he has featured as a ball-winning midfielder. Melbourne Victory’s Ryan Teague adds depth to the fight for that deeper lying role in the centre of the park. Speculation had recently linked him to the Chinese national team if his exploits had seen him overlooked for Australia again.

Triantis and Teague were picked over Max Balard and Patrick Yazbek. Balard has been a regular starter for NAC Breda in the Dutch top flight and was called into the Socceroos squad for the November window, but didn’t get on the field.

Defender Alex Grant gets his reward for a solid run of games with Sydney FC since signing a short-term deal with the Sky Blues in February. Grant is hugely experienced and has an Asian Champions League final appearance and a Korean Cup winners medal on his resume from his time with Pohang Steelers. At 6 foot 3 inches, the 31-year-old goes some way to filling the giant voids left by the injured Souttar and Matthews.

“It was a whirlwind start to the beginning of my tenure with the national team, and since November we’ve had the chance to review and assess all facets of our program ahead of these Qualifiers,” Popovic said.

“We understand the importance of these upcoming games and are excited by the opportunity to further cement our position in the group’s automatic qualifying positions.”

The biggest surprise is Duke missing selection. The striker has been a regular in green and gold since late 2019, but despite a huge work rate without the ball, hasn’t found the back of the net with the type of regularity the Socceroos have needed to smooth their path at or on the road to, major tournaments. Duke has found the back of the net just four times in 24-games at international level since the start of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The 34-year-old has also played 45-minutes for J-League side Machida Zelvia this season. Goals will now need to come from the boots of Yengi, Adam Taggart and Brandon Borrello.

There also wasn’t room for Nestory Irankunda once again despite the 19-year-old being named the Swiss Super League’s Player of the Month for February after his move from Bayern Munich to Grasshoppers.

The games against Indonesia on Thursday in Sydney and China in Hangzhou on Tuesday shape as crucial to Australia’s hopes of sealing direct qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in USA, Canada and Mexico. The Socceroos currently sit in second spot in Group C with four games left in the third round. If they stay there, they’ll earn an automatic berth to the game’s global showpiece. It makes two wins from these next two fixtures vital with Japan at home and Saudi Arabia away to come in June. Just one-point separates second placed Australia from last placed China.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the players and getting the squad together on the pitch in preparation for what will be a great occasion at the Sydney Football Stadium,” Popovic added.

    Extended 26 player Socceroos squad:

Daniel Arzani, Aziz Behich, Brandon Borrello, Martin Boyle, Cameron Burgess, Anthony Caceres, Jason Davidson, Milos Degenek, Jason Geria, Thomas Glover (GK), Craig Goodwin, Alex Grant, Jackson Irvine, Paul Izzo (GK), Fran Karacic, Lewis Miller, Aiden O’Neill, Kye Rowles, Mat Ryan (GK), Adam Taggart, Ryan Teague, Marco Tilio, Nectarios Triantis, Kai Trewin, Nishan Velupillay, Kusini Yengi

Slot unleashes ruthless edge as Liverpool face week of ‘finals’ with treble ambitions on the line

Liverpool boss Arne Slot described Paris Saint Germain’s visit as the second of “three finals” in a week, but has warned much more is needed from the Premier League leaders to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Reds escaped the Parc des Princes with a 1-0 lead last week despite being battered by the French champions, who came up against an inspired Alisson Becker in the Liverpool goal.

The Brazilian number one said his nine-save display was the “performance of his life”.

Never before have Liverpool won the first leg of a European tie away and let the lead slip at Anfield.

However, Slot is taking nothing for granted based on what he saw from PSG. Luis Enrique remained upbeat his side are “going to do it” despite suffering a first defeat in 23 games.

Adding to Slot’s concern was the lethargic first 45 minutes from his side against rock bottom Southampton in Saturday’s 3-1 win that forced the Dutchman into three half-time substitutions.

The Saints, who have won just nine points from 28 games all season, took a shock lead into the break before Darwin Nunez and two Mohamed Salah penalties turned the game around to stretch Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League to 15 points.

The League Cup final against Newcastle is also around the corner on Sunday with Slot very much on track for a treble in his first season in charge.

“The first of three finals,” he said of the victory over Southampton. “I do hope the next two finals we will play a bit better than the first one.

“The only good thing in the first 45 minutes was that they saved their energy (or PSG) and didn’t run at all. It was maybe the first time this season I saw this tempo.

“When I look at the game against PSG, we need to go one step up in terms of intensity. But if I compare it with the game today (Saturday), we need to go three, four, five, six or seven steps up in terms of intensity if we want to have any chance of reaching the next round.”

    – ‘Going for us’ –

Salah conceded that he had rarely seeing his manager so furious as he was during a half-time tirade that helped the turn the Southampton game around.

“The manager was like going for us,” said the Egyptian. “That’s something you need sometimes.” Slot has had little reason to lose his cool in his first nine months as Jurgen Klopp’s successor.

But he has shown his ruthless side when needed to keep Liverpool on course for just the fourth treble for an English side that would include the league title and Champions League.

Harvey Elliott scored the smash-and-grab winner in Paris with his first touch after replacing Salah, who had a rare off night.

Nunez’s work rate was questioned by his coach after disappointing displays against Wolves and Aston Villa, when he missed a glorious chance to win the game, last month.

Premier League wrap: Arsenal fall behind | 03:13

The Uruguayan has bounced back to deliver the assist for Elliott at the Parc des Princes and then sparked the fightback against Southampton with his first goal in 11 games.

Many believed Nunez would have been one of those sacrificed by Slot’s triple half-time change, but he rewarded his manager’s patience.

“I always hate the idea, if we need to score goals, to take someone off that can score a goal,” added Slot.

“That’s also the life of a number nine – you go from missing a chance to scoring an important goal.” After a pummelling in Paris, Slot is determined Liverpool do not make the same mistake in their quest for a seventh European Cup.

Howler gifts underdog who sacked their manager 48 hours ago lead; clinical Kane – CL Wrap

A catastrophic mistake by AC Milan’s French goalkeeper Mike Maignan handed troubled Dutch side Feyenoord a precious 1-0 advantage after the first leg of the Champions League play-offs Wednesday.

The surprise win was a welcome tonic for Feyenoord, who came into the match in disarray after axing manager Brian Priske less than 48 hours before the game.

In driving Rotterdam rain, the crowd had barely settled from the raucous pre-match singalong when the hosts took the lead thanks to Maignan’s inexplicable howler.

With only three minutes on the clock, Feyenoord’s Brazilian winger Igor Paixao cut in from the left and fired a speculative shot along the sodden turf.

The strike should never even have troubled the French international keeper but he somehow failed to collect it cleanly and it ricocheted off his body into the top corner.

Buoyed by a feverish atmosphere inside De Kuip, the Dutch side had the better of the opening exchanges, winning most of the 50-50 balls and adapting well to the slow surface.

Seven-time European champions AC Milan in contrast were sloppy and could not match the work rate of the home side.

Paixao was causing chaos with scything runs down the left-wing and saw a curling shot glance off the bar just before the break, with Maignan well beaten.

Defensively solid and Paixao in particular dangerous in attack, the unfancied hosts were good value for their 1-0 half-time lead, showing interim boss Pascal Bosschaart plenty of heart and commitment.

The second half lacked clear-cut chances until the 71st minute when the outstanding Paixao dispossessed England’s Kyle Walker and nearly scored with a lob from the halfway line.

Milan had one of their first meaningful shots on target when substitute Samuel Chukwueze tried his luck from distance but could only find Feyenoord keeper Timon Wellenreuther.

The one goal proved enough on the night for Feyenoord to take the upper hand back to Milan, who will need to show far more penetration in the return leg at the San Siro on February 18.

The match was a disappointing homecoming for AC Milan’s new striker Santiago Gimenez, who had only left De Kuip two weeks earlier after two and a half years and 65 goals in 105 appearances.

The visitors lacked bite up front in general and Gimenez was largely anonymous until he was substituted on 82 minutes, receiving a warm ovation from the Feyenoord fans.

Feyenoord will be hoping a win over AC Milan could herald the start of something special.

In the only previous European meeting between the two, the Rotterdam club took out the Italian giants in their run to their only European Cup title, in 1969-1970.

Awaiting the winner will be a clash with either Inter Milan or Arsenal.

    – Bayern sink Celtic to seize control of Champions League playoff –

Bayern Munich took a major step towards the Champions League last 16 as Michael Olise’s thunderbolt and Harry Kane’s clinical finish secured a 2-1 win at Celtic in the playoff round first leg on Wednesday.

Vincent Kompany’s side dominated the first half and a stunning strike from Olise gave them a deserved lead before Kane maintained his red-hot scoring streak after the interval.

Daizen Maeda netted in the closing stages to give Scottish champions Celtic hope of a miraculous escape act in the second leg.

The Japan forward was only playing after his two-game ban was unexpectedly reduced on appeal this week following his red card against Young Boys.

But Bundesliga leaders Bayern will still be favourites to advance to the last 16 when Celtic visit Munich on February 18.

Celtic finished just three points behind Bayern in the league phase, yet there is a huge gulf between the clubs’ European pedigree.

Six-time European champions Bayern lead the Bundesliga by eight points, while Celtic are attempting to reach the last 16 for the first time since 2012-13.

For the first 70 minutes that chasm in quality was clear to see before Bayern eased up in the closing stages, nearly allowing Celtic back into the tie as a result.

Celtic’s first defeat in 33 home matches across all competitions was a welcome confidence boost for Bayern, who had shown a weakness on the road in league phase defeats at Barcelona, Aston Villa and Feyenoord.

Celtic thought they had preyed on that weakness when former Bayern forward Nicolas Kuhn fired home from 20 yards inside the first minute, only for the goal to be disallowed for off-side against Adam Idah.

Bayern could have been swept away by the tidal wave of noise cascading down from the Parkhead stands.

But Kompany’s men are too experienced for that and they quickly seized control with a steady diet of possession.

    – Predatory Kane –

Olise nearly put Bayern ahead with a powerful strike that forced Kasper Schmeichel to save at his near post.

Schmeichel was forced into action again moments later as Kane’s curler was pushed away by the Dane.

Bayern were camped on the edge of the Celtic area as they probed for an opener. Kane should have broken the deadlock when he nodded Olise’s corner into the side-netting from close-range.

But the England captain’s blushes were spared by Olise on the stroke of half-time.

Cutting inside Greg Taylor to reach Dayot Upamecano’s long pass, Olise unleashed a blistering drive that arrowed into the top corner from 15 yards.

It was no more than Bayern deserved for their territorial dominance and the Germans struck again four minutes after the interval.

Joshua Kimmich’s corner swung all the way to the far post without a Celtic clearance and the unmarked Kane guided a composed volley past Schmeichel from five yards.

Kane’s typically predatory finish took his season tally to 29 goals in 29 games in all competitions.

Upamecano’s challenge on Arne Engels prompted a long VAR check for a potential penalty, but Celtic’s appeal was correctly rejected.

That was the signal for Celtic to mount a late bid to haul themselves back into the tie.

Bayern had grown increasingly sloppy and Rodgers’ men earned their lifeline in the 79th minute when Maeda met Yang Hyun-Jun’s shot with a header from virtually on the line.

Kompany’s men had to cling on for dear life in the final minutes, with Manuel Neuer producing a crucial save to deny Alistair Johnston.

  • Arnold ‘excited’ as teen sensation Irankunda to debut for Socceroos amid selection ‘headaches’

Arnold ‘excited’ as teen sensation Irankunda to debut for Socceroos amid selection ‘headaches’

Teenage sensation Nestory Irankunda will have free rein to torment Bangladesh’s defence when he makes his Socceroos debut in Dhaka on Thursday night.

Having impressed national coach Graham Arnold on and off the training field in Socceroos camp, the Bayern Munich-bound winger will definitely be given game time in Australia’s FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Bengal Tigers whether it’s as a starter or off the bench.

And once Irankunda’s on the park, the Socceroos will fit around him rather than the former Adelaide United star being forced to adapt to a certain structure.

“I’m not going to try and control him and get him to do things that are not his specialty,” Arnold said.

“What he’s very, very good at is doing what Nestor does and we will fit that into our style of play, and also in our system.

“There’s just a couple of little things around his defensive side of things, but that’s why we need the senior boys on the field, some of them to help coach and lead those younger boys to make them feel comfortable on the pitch.”

Arnold said 18-year-old Irankunda had fit into the Socceroos’ culture “extremely well”.

“He’s been very good. He’s hanging around a lot of the senior boys which is good to see, and he’s been training very, very well,” the Socceroos boss said.

“I’m excited and happy that everyone is talking about the kid.

“He is a great talent but it’s not always just about talent. It’s also about where your career is going.

“He’s going to Bayern Munich, but it’s also about how much hard work he puts in, and how much belief he has in himself to go to that next level.”

Nestory Irankunda will have the chance to bamboozle Bangladesh’s defence. Picture: Michael KleinSource: News Corp Australia

Arnold has also been impressed with former prodigy Daniel Arzani, who has the chance to make his first Socceroos appearance since the 2018 World Cup.

“He’s brought in some energy. Everywhere he sits everyone’s laughing which is great, but on the training pitch has been very good as well,” he said of the Melbourne Victory attacking weapon.

“You can see he has the real commitment and the hunger to get back and be with us on the long journey ahead.”

While Arnold would not confirm his full starting team, he said Aston Villa’s third-choice goalkeeper Joe Gauci would start ahead of the Victory’s Paul Izzo and Western Sydney’s Lawrence Thomas in the absence of long-time custodian and skipper Mat Ryan, who has rested from the clash with Bangladesh and next week’s battle with Palestine in Perth.

“It’s a good opportunity for us again to look at Joey, but he hasn’t played since he’s been at Villa, so (it’s about) getting him on the pitch and making sure that he’s working extremely well with the other two keepers and (goalkeeper coach) John Crawley,” Arnold said.

“I’m having a few (selection) headaches, but they’re good headaches with the depth that we’ve created and built over the last few years.

“When I look at the squad list, there are 10 to 13-14 players that aren’t here through injuries or other reasons, but it shows that we’re getting stronger and stronger, which is exciting.”

  • Fans stumped by weird omission from Indigenous championships

Fans stumped by weird omission from Indigenous championships

Imagine the Melbourne Cup without horses or the Sydney to Hobart without boats.

Or Anzac Day without Collingwood or State of Origin minus the Maroons.

The equivalent of such glaring absences is being seen this week in the geographic heart of the nation where Alice Springs is hosting the annual National Indigenous Cricket Championships without any representative team from the Northern Territory competing for the first time in the event’s history.

Since its inception in 2017, the event has always been hosted in the Top End and has always provided the opportunity for the best Indigenous cricketers to test their mettle against those from other states … until now.

Understandably former players are miffed to see the Alice hosting a tournament without home-team representation but NT Cricket boss Gavin Dovey says the absence is due to a lack of suitable players able to make the step up to interstate level competition.

“The bottom line is we didn’t have enough players of a suitable standard that expressed interest and nominated to play,” Dovey said.

“It’s really disappointing, but it’s the reality of it, we went to quite a lot of effort over the past three or four months going to clubs to put ourselves in the best possible situation.”

NT Indigenous cricket stalwart Darrell Lowe was furious at the omission and said it was a slap in the face not to have a side representing the home Territory in the 2024 event.

He feared the lack of an NT team would ruin the popularity of the contest among the local community which loved the sport.

“The frustration is huge because my people love cricket, I’d like to know how many supporters they get now there’s not a local team,” Lowe said.

“I can vouch for my players and my boys, we play that tournament hard and even if we’re not there on the final day we’ll make a fun day of it as a team.

“I’m devastated about this, I’ve put leave in every year for 20 years for this, paying my own way to play.”

The NT omission was one of several stories from across the nation’s regional and local competitions which caught our attention this week.

    Cricket boss’s vile tirade

It’s never a good look when a cricket official takes aim at the opposition.

It’s worse when that official is the club president.

It’s even worse when he is also a member of the competition committee.

Yet that was the case for Narre South Cricket Club president Nathan Tracy, who also sits on the Dandenong District Cricket Association committee, who is this week regretting an expletive–laden tirade he directed on social media towards opposing club Springvale South.

Despite his team celebrating a win over Springvale South at the weekend, Tracy’s Facebook post on his private account described his vanquished opponents as “inbred c**** who belittled us with allegations of cheating, having culture issues and being irrelevant in the DDCA”.

Despite deleting the post mere minutes later it was too late, as screenshots had been taken and shared freely around other clubs involved in the competition.

Not surprisingly, the DDCA is now assessing Tracy’s position on its committee.

Olympic golden hero competing against Australia

Strange goings on this weekend in Sydney when an Australian Olympic gold medal hero will compete against his home country under the colours of arch rival New Zealand.

London Olympic gold medallist Nathan Outteridge will be steering the New Zealand F50 in the Sydney SailGP this weekend for regular skipper Peter Burling – a man he beat for gold at the 2012 Games but who beat him in his Olympic defence in Rio four years later.

Now, Outteridge is doing his old frenemy a favour, answering the call to be the Kiwi’s stand-in skipper in Sydney as Burling takes parental leave.

In a strange coincidence, three of the skippers in the SailGP series have either become or are about to become fathers this season, including Australia skipper Tom Slingsby, now the proud father of baby son Leo.

Row, row, row your boat, watch out for that scrum

There are many pathways for elite talent to follow while chasing the dreams of a professional rugby career, but very few of them start in a row boat.

However, athletic second rower Isaac Fonua, who is part of the Waratahs Under 18s squad, believes the steadiness and balance of rowing has improved his clearly impressive rugby resume.

The soon to be 17-year-old from The Kings School Parramatta said time in a boat has taught him valuable lessons for rugby where he has been identified for future success.

“I did the junior eight last year but rowing and rugby are clashing at the moment,’’ he said.

“I like rowing. It helps me with my endurance and work rate on the field in rugby.

“I learnt things in rowing about being mentally fit and I learnt that you can never give up as well.’’

Fonua is hoping to steer the Waratahs to success this weekend in a clash against the Queensland Reds but if his budding rugby career doesn’t work out for him, at least he won’t be up the creek without a paddle … he can always focus on rowing.

    Keeping it in the family

It is not uncommon for ex-AFL players to return to local clubs to play some memorable games with old school mates or family members such as brothers or cousins.

Ex-North Melbourne captain Jack Ziebell announced this week that he is taking it a step further as he plans to line up for Avondale Heights this year in the Essendon District Football League as a favour to his father-in-law Paddy Byrne who coaches the team.

While Ziebell finished his career in defence for the Kangaroos, it seems unlikely he’ll be playing a stopping role in local footy.

“Zero chance,” said Paddy. We’re tipping Ziebell will be terrorising the opposition at the opposite end of the ground.

    That’s a lot of Sherrins!

The long-running saga surrounding the Gaza Football Club salary cap scandal is thankfully nearing the end after the recommended sanctions for years of cheating were handed down.

After finding the club guilty of 223 charges of salary cap breaches Justice Michael David KC – the independent Salary Cap Commissioner – made recommendations on penalties to the SA Football Commission on Tuesday night.

Among other sanctions around premiership points and player signings, he recommended the club should be fined a total of $186,000 for the breaches.

The SAFC is expected to soon report back on whether they will accept and enforce the recommendations.

If they do so, by our calculations, that monetary penalty is the equivalent of buying 775 brand new match day Sherrins.

    What a balls up!

Finals fever takes over the Top End

The finals have – well, finally – arrived for the best football you can get in the Summer, the NTFL.

It is the time of year in the Top End everyone has been waiting for and if last week’s mini brawl (see the video above) is anything to go by, a few have thought the wait was too long.

KommunityTV will live stream every match from both the men’s and women’s premier league finals series starting with this weekend’s elimination and qualifying showdowns.

PINT, who are playing in the club’s first ever Premier League men’s final, will be determined to keep the dream alive in the elimination final against last year’s grand finallists Southern Districts Crocs.

In the women’s elimination final, barely a hair can split two rivals Darwin Buffaloes and Waratah, as they each try to end the other’s seasons.

In case you want some light reading before the finals action kicks off on Saturday, the NT News revealed it’s top 100 players to lace on the boots this century.

There might just be a name or two you recognise.

‘Hardest part of sport’: Boomers make first cuts to World Cup squad as trio miss out

The Boomers have made the first cuts to their 18-man squad ahead of the FIBA World Cup.

Thon Maker, Keanu Pinder, and Sam Froling were the three players to miss out as Basketball Australia confirmed the reduced squad after Sunday’s scrimmage in Cairns.

The remaining 15 players will stay in camp in Cairns until Wednesday, when they will travel to Melbourne for warm-up games against Brazil, South Sudan and Venezuela.

Boomers head coach Brian Goorjian will then have to cut the final squad down to 12 after those games.

“This is an elite squad with so much talent, there is no easy way to make cuts, but the reality is that we only get to take 12 into Okinawa,” Goorjian said on Sunday.

“Would I take all of these players if I could? Absolutely, but that’s the hardest part of sport, you have to make the cuts, we have to keep moving forward.

“I have the utmost respect for Sam, Thon and Keanu and their contribution here in Cairns, their work rate has been exceptional. On and off court they have demonstrated the highest level of professionalism.

“They are the best in the field for a reason and of course I’m disappointed that they can’t come through with us, but they all respect the process and came into the camp understanding what we are all here to achieve.”

Graham Arnold turns to next generation of Socceroos as Man City teen, 17-year-old star called up

Socceroos coach Graham Arnold has wasted little time in gifting the next generation of national heroes an opportunity with Alexander Robertson called up to the squad and Nestory Irankunda selected as a train-on player for the upcoming Ecuador fixtures.

Also called up to the squad for the time is Adelaide United goalkeeper Joe Gauci as well as Melbourne City duo Jordy Bos and Aiden O’Neill.

Irankunda isn’t officially in the squad, but Arnold views the window as a golden opportunity to give the 17-year-old valuable experience with some of Australia’s most seasoned professionals at the top of their game.

Robertson, on the other hand, has been in fine form for Manchester City’s under-23 squad and recently earned a spot on the bench for Pep Guardiola’s side in the first leg of their Champions League tie against RB Leipzig.

The Maroubra-raised teen’s selection is noteworthy given he was eligible for Scotland, Peru and England, even representing the Three Lions at youth level.

However, Arnold believes that once Robertson puts on the Socceroos jersey for the first time and “feels the emblem on his heart, there’s only one nation he will play for.”

“I’ve probably been talking to him for over 18 months and it was a matter of one step at a time,” Arnold said.

“This time when I called him and told him I wanted to pick him for these Ecuador games, straight away it was, ‘Arnie, I can’t wait.’ He was looking forward to it so much.

“His agent Paddy Dominguez has been fantastic with the communication through that by keeping me informed of where the kid’s at and his dad Mark.

“It’s great that the kid, I do believe, is aligning himself with Australia. I’m pretty sure once he puts that Socceroos shirt on and feels the emblem on his heart, there’s only one nation he will play for.”

Critics may question Robertson’s selection given he is yet to log any first team minutes for City and has just 143 minutes of senior football to his name from an ill-fated loan spell with Ross County in 2021.

Yet the fact Robertson is rubbing shoulders with the likes of Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne daily out on the training pitch and learning from one of the greatest coaches of all time is enough reassurance for Arnold in his selection.

“When you’re playing and training with those types of players every week, he’s there for a reason,” Arnold said.

“And that reason is obviously that Pep Guardiola rates him highly and sees what quality he’s got.

“He’s more an attacking type, 8/10 midfielder, gets in the box, scores goals and makes assists as well. He’s got a good flair about him.”

As for fellow teenager Irankunda, the invitation to the Socceroos camp is the latest chapter in the Adelaide United youngster’s meteoric rise to prominence.

However, Reds boss Carl Veart has made no secret the teen star has plenty of learning to do and pointed to a higher work rate as one clear area for improvement in Irankunda’s game.

When questioned if the youngster’s call-up is largely to show Irankunda a glimpse of what is required on the field to reach the top of football, Arnold agreed.

But he reiterated it’s also a chance to learn what is also required off the field to succeed too.

“It’s how Maty and Aaron and these guys who have been professionals for a long time and have achieved these things, it’s what it takes day to day to be a professional footballer and I think he will learn very quickly off that,” Arnold said.

“Yes, he is in there as a train-on, at this moment.

“There is two games, the back-up of the games are very short. We play Friday and Tuesday.

“There will be a good chance for the second game especially that he’ll be in the squad.”
