WPL 2025: RCB superstar Ellyse Perry reveals her admiration for the Kumbh Mela

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)‘s Ellyse Perry continues to dazzle cricket fans with her exceptional talent and magnetic personality. With a massive fan following and numerous accolades to her name, the Australian all-rounder has become an influential figure in the world of cricket. Even in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025, Perry is among the top run scorers, which has cemented her reputation as one of the most reliable batters in the tournament.

Fascination with the Kumbh Mela: A cultural awakening for Ellyse Perry

In a recent interview on the RCB Podcast with Mayanti Langer, Perry opened up about her personal journey and the unexpected influences that have shaped her perspective on life and cricket. One of the most intriguing revelations was her newfound fascination with the Kumbh Mela, a massive festival that takes place once every 144 years.

Although she admitted that she had never even heard of the event back home, learning about its deep cultural and religious significance in India left her completely in awe. Perry explained that the sheer scale of the Kumbh Mela and the way it brings together millions of people under a shared cultural and spiritual umbrella is truly remarkable. This experience, she said, made her feel grateful and enriched, offering her a glimpse into the power of tradition and community.

“I’m probably not going to say this correctly, but just learning about this event has been incredible. It’s something I had never even heard of back home, yet it’s such an amazing gathering that takes place every 144 years. It revolves around religion, culture, and tradition, drawing millions of people together. Discovering events like this has been truly fascinating and makes me feel incredibly grateful,” Perry said.

  • WPL 2025 Match Review: Beth Mooney, bowlers lead Gujarat Giants Women to emphatic victory

WPL 2025 Match Review: Beth Mooney, bowlers lead Gujarat Giants Women to emphatic victory

Gujarat Giants Women emerged as deserved victors by an 81-run margin over UP Warriorz Women in Match 15 of the Women’s Premier League 2025 at the Ekana International Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Monday, March 3. As a result of the crushing defeat, the hosts slipped to the bottom of the points table.

Dayalan Hemalatha’s lean run in WPL 2025 continued as she nicked one behind on the final delivery of the first over of the game to grant instant success to the home team. Gujarat’s innings yielded only 40 runs in the powerplay. It was the six overs after that stage where Beth Mooney and Harleen Deol (45 off 32) steadied the ship to a relatively more comfortable position. Harleen was got rid in the 13th over, serving as a much-needed breakthrough for UP.

Mooney raced to 85 by the end of the 16th over, skipper Ashleigh Gardner providing her company at the other end. Although Kranti Goud’s final over was an expensive one, it resulted in the departure of Gardner. Deandra Dottin’s handy cameo came to an end in the 18th. Mooney was left stranded unbeaten on 96, the main reason being the wicketkeeper-batter facing only four deliveries in the final two overs of Gujarat’s innings. Sophie Ecclestone ended up with a two-fer to her name.

The second innings commenced in a terrible manner for UP with the wickets of Kiran Navgire and WPL debutant, Georgia Voll, in the very first over. Their powerplay was further dented with an additional couple of wickets falling in the phase. Opening batter Grace Harris, who had been watching the chaos unfold from the other end, was sent back on the final delivery of the 10th over. Chinelle Henry, who proved to be the most economical bowler for UP replaced Harris in the middle.

A 17-run over by Meghna Singh, the 13th of the innings, was when Henry garnered almost half of her explosive 14-ball 28-run knock’s runs. A double-wicket over by Kashvee Gautam brought about the eighth and ninth wickets of UP’s innings. Tanuja Kanwar cleaned up Ecclestone in the next over to seal the deal for Gujarat.

The massive victory marked only the second time in 15 games this season that the side batting first was successful in defending the target. The loss by 81 runs stood second in the biggest margins of losses by runs in the history of the WPL.

Twitter Reactions: Twitter Reactions: Shafali, Jess power Delhi Capitals women to WPL 2025 playoffs

Popular T20 women’s franchise Delhi Capitals Women (DC-W) prevailed against Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women (RCB-W) by nine wickets in Match 14 of the Women’s Premier League 2025 clash. Notably, the fixture took place at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, on Saturday, March 1.

Being put in to bat first, Bengaluru did not quite get to a positive start with skipper, Smriti Mandhana, getting dismissed in the second over itself. Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Ellyse Perry stitched a crucial 44-run stand for the second wicket. Raghvi Bist joined Perry in the middle after the fall of Wyatt-Hodge. The former anchored the innings. However, she could not build on her knock, getting dismissed for 33 off 32.

Perry delivered a solo masterclass yet again. She ended the innings on an unbeaten 60* off 47 deliveries. The middle-order batters after Bist of the hosts could only score a couple of boundaries among them off a total of 16 deliveries. Bengaluru ended up on 147/5, with Shree Charani impressing on WPL debut, yielding figures of 2/28 in four overs.

Coming to the run-chase, the home team were on top for the first half of the powerplay. The dismissal of a struggling Meg Lanning for 2 (12) made it seem that Bengaluru were right in the game. However, the next three overs of the powerplay belonged to the tourists, who ended up scoring 36. Shafali Verma had raced on to 27 by the end of the first six.

It was all about the top-order batting of Shafali and Jess Jonassen from that juncture. Their smart running between the wickets and frequent boundary-hitting took the game out of Bengaluru’s reach. The two batters ended up chasing the target with 4.3 overs to spare, ending up on 80* (43) and 61* (38), respectively. This was Delhi’s fifth victory in seven games this season.

Teams will also prefer to chase at the venue because of the presence of dew. Royal Challengers Bengaluru managed to chase down 202 runs against Gujarat with more than an over to spare and it could become a template for the teams going ahead in the tournament.
