Devdutt Padikkal, Yash Dayal join Team India ahead of Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener vs Australia

In a recent development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made changes to the squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2024-25) against Australia. The team management added Karnataka left-handed batter Devdutt Padikkal to the squad amid reports of Shubman Gill’s injury.

Team India has been forced to change their plans ahead of the first Test match. They will miss two of their top three batters for the series opener. Captain Rohit Sharma is unavailable due to the birth of his second child, while Shubman Gill hurt his thumb during a practice session against India A at WACA.

KL Rahul is likely to replace Rohit at the top of the order, but the team has to fill the gap at No. 3 following Shubman Gill’s injury. Reputed media outlet RevSportz confirmed that Devdutt Padikkal has been added to the squad. It also reported that Yash Dayal has been included as a traveling reserve.

  • BCCI announces Test squad for the New Zealand series, names Jasprit Bumrah as vice-captain

BCCI announces Test squad for the New Zealand series, names Jasprit Bumrah as vice-captain

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named a 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match Test series against New Zealand, starting on October 17 at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. The selection committee has opted for continuity, retaining the same squad that recently triumphed 2-0 against Bangladesh in a two-match Test series. Currently sitting at the top of the World Test Championship (WTC) standings, India will aim to extend their dominance in the upcoming series.

Jasprit Bumrah named vice-captain of Team India

One of the key highlights of the squad announcement is Jasprit Bumrah‘s appointment as vice-captain. His consistent performances in the longest format have earned him this leadership role. The pacer has been a vital asset for India across all formats, and his appointment reflects the selectors’ confidence in his ability to guide the team both on and off the field. Bumrah’s role will be crucial, especially with Mohammed Shami still recovering from an injury that has sidelined him since the 2023 World Cup final.

Changes in the squad for the New Zealand series

The only significant change to the squad is the omission of Yash Dayal, who was part of the Bangladesh series but has been left out for the New Zealand series. Meanwhile, Shami remains unavailable as he continues to recover from his ankle injury. The experienced pacer has made it clear that he will not rush back until he is fully fit, preferring to avoid the risk of long-term injury. To ensure depth, the BCCI has named four travelling reserves: Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Mayank Yadav and Prasidh Krishna.

    Focus on emerging talent

Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel, who didn’t feature in the Bangladesh series, have been retained for the New Zealand Tests. Both players showcased their talent during the Irani Cup 2024, with Sarfaraz scoring a remarkable double century for Mumbai and Jurel impressing with a score of 97 for the Rest of India. India may look to rotate their squad and give opportunities to these players, along with others like Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, to ensure they are match-ready ahead of the highly anticipated Australia series.

      • Expectation: Jain will be relied upon to bowl economically, restricting the opposition’s scoring opportunities and breaking partnerships when needed. His role is pivotal in the middle overs, where he can put pressure on the batsmen and shift the momentum in his team’s favor.
    9. Prasidh Krishna

      • Expectation: Krishna is expected to lead the pace attack, especially with the new ball, and take key wickets in the powerplay. His pace and bounce will also be useful in the death overs, where he can target batsmen with his accurate yorkers and slower balls.

  • Irani Cup 2024: Ruturaj Gaikwad to captain Rest of India as BCCI announces 15-member squad

Irani Cup 2024: Ruturaj Gaikwad to captain Rest of India as BCCI announces 15-member squad

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the 15-member Rest of India (RoI) squad for the upcoming Irani Cup. The prestigious match will take place at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow from October 1 to October 5, where the RoI squad will face the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 champions Mumbai.

Ruturaj Gaikwad to lead Rest of India squad

Ruturaj Gaikwad has been appointed as the captain of the Rest of India squad. Gaikwad recently led India C in the Duleep Trophy 2024, where his team reached the finals. His leadership qualities and recent form have made him an ideal candidate for this role. Joining him will be Abhimanyu Easwaran, who has been named vice-captain, along with key players from the domestic circuit.

    Comeback for the Irani Cup

Ishan Kishan, who scored a century in his recent Duleep Trophy outing, continues his comeback to red-ball cricket with his selection in the RoI squad. Kishan is one of two wicketkeepers in the squad, alongside Dhruv Jurel, who may also be involved in India’s second Test against Bangladesh. Kishan’s inclusion is significant as he works his way back into national contention after losing his central contract earlier this year.

    Dual commitments and potential return

Both Yash Dayal and Dhruv Jurel have been named in the Rest of India squad but may miss the Irani Cup clash if they are selected for India’s second Test against Bangladesh, which overlaps with the Irani Cup. Dayal, the left-arm pacer, has been a standout in recent domestic tournaments, while Jurel’s wicketkeeping and middle-order capabilities have earned him attention.

Sarfaraz Khan, part of the Indian Test squad, is set to represent Mumbai if he is not included in India’s playing XI for the second Test. His inclusion in the Mumbai squad, led by Ajinkya Rahane, will strengthen the team as they prepare to face RoI in the Irani Cup. Sarfaraz has consistently been among the top performers in domestic cricket, and his form will be crucial for Mumbai.

“Dhruv Jurel and Yash Dayal have been selected in the Rest of India squad and their participation is subject to them not being involved in the second Test match against Bangladesh in Kanpur. The 2nd Test will begin from 27th September. Sarfaraz Khan who has been retained in the Team India squad for the 2nd Test, will be released to represent the Mumbai team subject to him not being involved in the second Test match against Bangladesh in Kanpur,” the BCCI said in a statement.

Emerging stars and performers from Duleep Trophy

Several players who shone in the Duleep Trophy 2024 have been rewarded with places in the Rest of India squad. Sai Sudharsan, a standout performer with the bat, and left-arm spinner Manav Suthar are among the new faces in the team. However, senior batter Mayank Agarwal, who captained India A to a Duleep Trophy win, was surprisingly left out of the squad.

  • Yash Dayal came from RCB quota: Fans react to pacer’s India Test call-up against Bangladesh

Yash Dayal came from RCB quota: Fans react to pacer’s India Test call-up against Bangladesh

The 26-year-old Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Uttar Pradesh left-arm pacer Yash Dayal received his maiden India Test call-up for the first Test of the two-match series against the Bangladesh National Cricket Team at home.

Yash Dayal has been one of the most talented fast bowlers in the Indian circuit and he has delivered some amazing performances over the years. His left-arm variety played a part in him getting the Test call-up for the match against Bangladesh because the Indian team management is reportedly keen to have a left-arm pacer in the squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.

The reports that came out a few weeks back had suggested that Yash Dayal, Khaleel Ahmed, and Arshdeep Singh, who has become a star performer for the Indian T20I team, were in contention to get selected for the Indian Test team.

And now, it seems like Yash Dayal has won that race. If he gets picked in the playing XI for the first Test against Bangladesh, Dayal will be eyeing a great performance to cement his place in the team as India are set for a big Test season ahead.

Overall, Yash Dayal has featured in 24 first-class matches and has picked up 76 wickets at an average of 28.89, an economy of 2.98, and a strike rate of 58.0. He recently played for India B in the match against India A in the Duleep Trophy and returned with bowling figures of 1/39 & 3/50 in the two innings.

Other than Yash Dayal, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors have picked Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Akash Deep as the pacers in the squad along with the spin quartet of Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja.

One thing to be noted here is that this is not Yash Dayal’s maiden India call-up, but the first-ever India Test call-up. He was earlier selected in the India squad in 2022 for the away three-match ODI series against Bangladesh but was forced to miss the matches due to a lower back issue and was replaced by Madhya Pradesh fast bowler Kuldeep Sen in the squad.

Skipper Rohit Sharma will continue to lead the India squad in red-ball cricket after announcing his retirement from the T20 internationals.

The recall of Rishabh Pant, maiden chance to Yash Dayal

The most notable inclusion in the squad is the return of wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who has made a strong comeback after a long injury layoff. Pant, who was instrumental in India’s Test success in recent years, will be eager to make an immediate impact.

Another significant addition to the squad is the inclusion of Yash Dayal, who has earned a maiden Test call-up based on his impressive performances in domestic cricket. Dayal joins a pace attack that already includes Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep.

Virat Kohli and KL Rahul return

India’s batting lineup is bolstered by the return of Virat Kohli, who missed the five-match Test series against England due to personal reasons. Kohli, one of the greatest batsmen of his generation, will be eager to contribute significantly in the series.

‘How are you feeling mom?’ – Yash Dayal greets mother after delivering match-winning over against CSK

Yash Dayal was the hero of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on May 19. In a do-or-die clash with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), RCB trusted their pacer Dayal to defend 17 runs off the final over. It all depended on the pacer to maintain his composure and deliver, as it turned out he did the same against marauding MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja. Bengaluru won the game by 27 runs and theoretically nine runs and were through to the playoffs in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024).

Dayal is infamously known to have conceded five consecutive sixes off the last over as Rinku Singh played a miraculous innings in a chase in IPL 2023. He was criticized much for his bowling abilities and was a fodder for trolls on social media. Understandably, his family was also at the receiving end of the criticism and the first thing Dayal did after bowling match-winning over was to check on his mother.

The right-arm pacer’s family was overwhelmed after their son’s magical performance. While he had a lot to prove to the world, he found solace in the contentment of his parents. Chandrapal, Dayal’s father, revealed that his son said that he was confident of containing Dhoni after being hit for the six on the first ball.

‘It was a nightmare yesterday, his mother stopped eating’ – Yash Dayal’s father after Rinku Singh’s carnage

Get every cricket updates! Follow us on

Following an unfortunate outcome for Yash Dayal in his last over against Kolkata Knight Riders in the 13th T20 of the Indian Premier League, his father Chandrapal Dayal has recently revealed how the family coped with the dreadful evening.

Dayal was sent in by Gujarat Titans’ stand-in skipper Rashid Khan to defend 29 runs off the final over. However, little did he know that KKR’s middle-order batter Rinku Singh was going to turn the over into an iconic one, making it forgettable for the young Uttar Pradesh fast bowler. Rinku hit five consecutive sixes off the last five deliveries to defeat Titans in a thrilling encounter.

Following that, Dayal‘s mother Radha Dayal had stopped eating and had to be taken special care of by the family, Chandrapal revealed. Dayal mentioned that his nutritionist daughter Shuchi who also takes care of Yash Dayal’s nutritional requirements tried to console her mother.

“It was a nightmare yesterday,” Dayal was quoted by Times of India. However, Chandrapal, who had himself been a cricketer in his University days, having represented North Zone in the Vizzy trophy, backed his son and said that such moments were part of sports and lessons had to be learned from such incidents to be implemented in real life as well.

“These are the moments sport is made up of. Even in life you come across failures, it’s important to stand up stronger,” said Chandrapal.

He also reasoned that Rinku had no other option but to smash the ball in the final over and since he knew Dayal well, having played for the same state team, it might have favoured him to pick up the lines and lengths and react with perfection to execute the unthinkable.

“He (Rinku) just had to smash every ball and they know each other well. It may have come handy for Rinku and it was simply not his day. Many great cricketers (Chetan Sharma) has gone through this,” Chandrapal Dayal said.

Chandrapal thanks Hardik Pandya and GT members for helping his son buck up

Chandrapal also extended his gratitude to Gujarat Titans and especially, skipper Hardik Pandya, for not giving up on Dayal and cheering him up after the disastrous outing. He mentioned that Pandya and co. spent time with him and gave him company to help him buck up. He also said that the team had special fun sessions to spend some lighter moments with Dayal.

“They made him sit in the centre and consoled him. Later, there was naach-gaana (dance, music), they spent some light moments with him,” Chandrapal said.
