Arsenal wanted to sign me but Newcastle money was too tempting – I was naive

Kieron Dyer could have been a part of Arsenal’s Invincibles had he not rushed into a decision as a young footballer.

The speedy winger was the talk of English football after progressing through the ranks at Ipswich Town during the late 90s.

After failing to win promotion in the 1998/99 campaign, interest was building in Dyer who told talkSPORT there were other offers on the table when he completed a £6.5million move to Newcastle.

Speaking to Drive, Dyer explained a move away from his boyhood club was inevitable having come so close to the Premier League in a team with highly-rated players.

He said: “We had Richard Wright, myself, James Scowcroft and David Johnson – really good young players so the director’s box was full of scouts and it was always in the paper that we were probably going to be leaving that summer, so it was kind of expected.

“I remember coming back from pre-season and [manager] George Burley pulls me into the office and says, ‘We haven’t received any offers that we want to accept so if you start the season with us you have to get your head down’. I said, ‘Yeah, of course.’

“Then we finished training and someone said ‘the gaffer wants to see you in his office’ and I go there and he says, ‘We’ve just accepted an offer for six and a half million, so you need to go now.’

“I had to drive to Stansted airport and meet my agent before flying to Newcastle.

“But if I’d have been a bit more wise I probably wouldn’t have ended up in Newcastle.

“At the time, Arsenal wanted me with Arsene Wenger, I spoke to David O’Leary and Leeds on the phone, I spoke to Harry Redknapp who was manager of West Ham at the time.”

Signed by Ruud Gullit in 1999, Dyer ended up spending eight years at St James’ Park between 1997 and 2007 where he made 250 appearances for the club.

While clearly enjoying his time in the north east, the midfielder failed to win a single piece of silverware, something that can’t be said for the Gunners in that period.

Arsenal enjoyed a true period of dominance under Wenger in those years, winning two Premier League titles, three FA Cups and as many Community Shields.

It was also an era that goes down in football history, with Wenger’s side being dubbed ‘The Invincibles’ due to going the entire 2003/2004 Premier League season without losing a game.

While he got to play with record scorer Alan Shearer among others at Newcastle, at Arsenal he could lined up alongside Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Robert Pires to name a few.

Reflecting on the other interested clubs, he said: “If I’d have known what I know now, I’d have said, ‘I want to wait a bit’ and seen if Arsenal or Leeds would have increased their bid because I had the chance to be a part of the Invincibles squad.”

Laughing at his youthful thinking, he added: “Because you’re so young and naive – plus my agent told me what Newcastle were offering – it was like, ‘Ooff we go’, sort of thing.

“You don’t really know because you have no experience.”

Dyer scored 36 goals for Newcastle in all competitions before leaving in 2007

Dyer had, at times, a strained relationship with Newcastle, but showed plenty of times why the club paid so much money for one of the most talented young players in the country.

He joined West Ham in 2007 and retired from playing in 2013 after short spells at QPR and Middlesbrough in addition to a stint back at Ipswich.

While Arsenal haven’t won a league title since 2004, they are currently competing for the top-flight for a third consecutive season.

Though they look set to miss out once again with leaders Liverpool sit points clear, with Arne Slot’s men also having a game in hand.

As for Newcastle, they are in contention to secure Champions League football for the second time in three years with the Toon sitting in sixth spot – two points off the top four.

I became a Soccer AM favourite and ended up in a Denzel Washington headlock

From being camera-shy to becoming one of the stars of Soccer AM to now running one of the most-loved YouTube channels – it’s been a whirlwind career for Tubes.

The 42-year-old – real name Peter Dale – earned cult hero status amongst football fans during his lengthy time with TV show Soccer AM.

Tubes was a massive hit on Soccer AM, with fans loving his hilarious antics on the show

    5

From his iconic, ‘One Answer only’ segment to bewildering celebrities with his unique rapping, Tubes never failed to put a smile on fans’ faces throughout his 21 years working on the Sky show, which was cancelled last year.

Since then Rocket, another beloved and popular cast member, has created a YouTube channel called Soccer PM, which he told talkSPORT is a ‘homage’ to the ‘glory days’ and his first guest on his first episode was the one and only ‘Tuuuuubbbes’.

It’s safe to say he’s come a long way from his first TV appearance on Soccer AM in 2001, where he initially starred as ‘Peter The Test Tube Baby’.

He never had intentions of becoming that character though.

“I’m quite shy, and I still am,” he told Rocket.

But his persona immediately resonated with fans – and the show’s high-profile guests – which saw Tubes showcase his musical abilities to Hollywood’s elite.

And one interaction with two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington stands out the most for him, as he recalled their meeting at the Savoy Hotel in London.

When asked who he enjoyed speaking to most, he said: “Probably the funniest interview I ever did – Denzel Washington or Will Ferrell.

“The Denzel Washington one was weird,” he continued as he recalled the holding room where media are kept before getting their five minutes to interview the guest.

“When you go to a film junket, there’s media there from ITV, BBC – all of the outlets.

“So I walked in, I used to wear converse with big, baggie jeans and a black shirt, and they’re all in suits.

“They’re like, ‘Oh hello,’ eating their teacakes, and I just sat in the corner playing Snake on my Nokia.

“They were like, ‘Are you here to see Denzel?’, I was like, ‘Well obviously’, I didn’t just come to sit and have teacakes.

Soccer AM legends Tim Lovejoy and Helen Chamberlain reunite to launch new project Soccer A-Z

“They were like, ‘Oh he won’t like you,’ I was like, ‘Well that’ll be quite good TV then, it’s a win-win,’ and I used to get nervous all the time.”

Rocket then remembered his friend getting so scared interviewing celebs on camera that he used to retch.

Tubes, though, put that to one side and delivered his rap and, to some, an off putting stare.

“I said, ‘You’re a top man, you are Den, I’ve been rapping since I was ten, rapping is for life, not just for Christmas, oooh,’ and I had my eyes closed.

Tubes discussed his interaction with American actor Washington to ex-colleague Rocket

“And as I was opening my eyes, I can just see Denzel Washington [expressionless], so we’re both staring at each other, I’m staring at Denzel Washington after telling him I’ve been rapping since I was ten.

“And then all of a sudden, he just gave it back and played along. It was amazing.

“So we were walking out and he’s got me in a headlock. He’s like, ‘Don’t f*** with Big Tubes’, and walked past this room, and all the suits are looking with their teacakes – I was like, ‘It went well!’”

While Tubes, who survived a heart attack in early 2018, may have been happy-go-lucky on screen, he struggled with alcohol addiction, but has since been sober for eight years.

The Chelsea fan proudly remarked: “End of May [2024] was eight years [since he last consumed alcohol], so I’m buzzing about it, I’m really happy. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done.”

Rocket has ventured into YouTube, which he told talkSPORT will be used to speak to ex-Soccer AM employees

Asked by Rocket whether there was a time where he thought he would never be able to stop drinking, Tubes said: “Obviously when I was drinking, I was in that world, and that’s all I was doing.

“But it’s the best decision I’ve made, and the last eight years have been the happiest of my life.”

He has since successfully launched a YouTube channel called Golf Life, which is closing in on 300,000 subscribers where loved his guests and distinct sense of humour.

“Golf is a form of exercise as well, it’s good for the mind, so it was no cigarettes from when I had the heart attack, that got knocked on the head!

“My life has changed and I love it now, I’m more clearer, [I have] more purpose, I couldn’t carry on the way that I was, but I’m buzzing, eight years.”

At its height, Soccer AM was the go-to show to kickstart Saturday mornings off for thousands of football fans. Starting in 1995.

A host of celebrity guests showed their love of football such as Oasis songwriter Noel Gallagher, while Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson took part in the skill skool segment.

Lovejoy and Chamberlain and some of the old gang have recently got back together to present a podcast of their own called Soccer A-Z.

Awkward – Arsenal fans notice Timber’s reaction as Areteta welcomes Calafiori

Arsenal fans couldn’t help but notice how Jurrien Timber and Jakub Kiwior reacted to Riccardo Calafiori’s arrival at the club.

Arsenal signed Calafiori from Bologna this week in a deal worth an initial £38million following a spectacular season where he helped lead the Serie A outfit to fifth in the league.

The Italy international can play left-back, centre-back and defensive midfield – much like two other players manager Mikel Arteta already has in the squad.

Timber and Kiwior both play left-back and centre-back but had difficult campaigns last season.

Timber spent most of the year injured after suffering an torn ACL on his debut while Kiwior struggled for game-time ahead of Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Arteta introduced Calafiori, who has been likened to Sergio Ramos, in a heart-warming video that was released on Arsenal’s YouTube channel where the defender stands up and is applauded by his new teammates.

But Arsenal fans noticed his rivals for game time, particularly Dutchman Timber who warmly clapped his hands before darting a glance at the new recruit.

Kiwior, meanwhile, beamed a smile as he entered the room and high-fived a coach as one fan wrote: “Does he know?”

Speaking on Timber, one fan wrote: “Look at Timber.”

Another replied: “Thought I was the only one who saw it, he knows, competition just gets stiffer.”

Arsenal now have several options in defence, which was the best in the Premier League last season and conceded just 29 times.

Arteta largely stuck with the same back four when available with David Raya taking Aaron Ramsdale’s position in goal but Calafiori could become the new first-choice left-back ahead of Zinchenko.

Calafiori finally signed for Arsenal this week after a long delay

It means that every player has a back-up with Takehiro Tomiyasu behind Ben White at right-back, Timber behind William Saliba and Kiwior behind Gabriel Magalhaes.

And as the Gunners plot a way to overthrow Manchester City at the top of the table, Arteta will need all the help he can get.

Calafiori could be the answer after Zinchenko came under fire at times throughout the season while the 22-year-old made a short speech during his first meeting with the squad.

New Arsenal signing Riccardo Calafiori wants to win trophies at the North London club after joining from Serie A side Bologna

He said: “Of course, I am really happy to be here. I waited a lot. I hope we are going to do something great this year. Just this, thank you.”

After the meeting had concluded, Arteta gave Calafiori a big hug as the full-back said: “Is this real?”

Arteta replied: “It is real, it is real.”

Arsenal’s move for Calafiori was held up by Bologna after a dispute with his former club Basel over the sell-on fee and Arteta admitted he was left frustrated.

He said: “I’m very happy. It took a while – it was a player that we have monitored for a year.

“We were really short in the backline last year in terms of numbers and we demanded so much from them. William Saliba, for example, played in every minute of the Premier League and we believe we had to be more protected.

“We identified him as a talent that can give us skill and qualities that are going to make us better. We are signing a player with a huge capacity to develop.”

Arsenal are next in action on Wednesday night against Liverpool in a pre-season friendly at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Whether Calafiori will take part remains to be seen but Arteta might give fans a little look at their latest signing.

    Mikel Arteta on Riccardo Calafiori

Arteta: “I am very happy that we’ve got Riccardo done. As I said, it was very important to have that protection in the backline because of the issues that we had, especially last year when Jurrien was injured.

“It increases the quality and the competition and it’s very good for the team.

“It was the numbers. We only had six defenders in the backline and at this level you have to be really lucky to sustain the season like this.

“We were, because William for example and Gabriel nearly played every minute, we played more than 50 per cent more minutes than the previous season and if we are able to do that consistently over the next three or four years that’s a big question mark.

“Obviously you cannot just bet on that, that’s a big bet and we don’t want to take that bet.

“[He can play] both [left-back and centre-back], especially the way we want to play and the way we want to evolve in our game models.

“He is a player who is going to fit into what we want.

“I spoke to him one or two times and I knew the other things [teams being interested].

“I wasn’t really sure if we could do it or not, but he was adamant: ‘let me know when you’re ready, my bags are ready and I just want to come to Arsenal’.

“Those were his words and when you have that feeling, someone with that willingness to join us and make us better and that determination, it’s something really powerful and as a club, we should be really proud of that.”

Leicester poke fun at themselves after transfer blunder

Leicester might have accidentally confirmed their new signing early but at least they have seen the funny side.

The Foxes have signed Caleb Okoli on a five-year contract from Atalanta to bolster their defensive numbers.

    3

The Italian spent last season on loan at Serie A outfit Frosinone and impressed despite the club suffering relegation.

The 22-year-old has become the third signing of the summer, with Bobby De-Cordova Reid arriving on a free transfer and Michael Golding joining from Chelsea.

So you would think that Leicester might have learned how to announce a signing by now.

But before they officially unveiled the arrival of Okoli, a video went up on the club’s YouTube channel of the player’s first interview with the Foxes.

It was swiftly deleted but had already been spotted by many eagle-eyed fans.

However, they were quick to make a joke out of the situation on social media.

After making the transfer announcement on X, one user replied: “Took your time lads.”

Jokingly, the official Leicester account said: “Sorry, was watching something on YouTube.”

And fans were loving the sly reply, with one saying: “Admin’s got banter.”

Okoli has looked a potential star for Leicester in a position they have needed to strengthen at centre-back.

The youngster came up through the ranks at Atalanta before spending several seasons away on loan, making 17 appearances for his parent club.

As well as a year with Frosinone, Okoli has had loan stints at Italian clubs SPAL and Cremonense.

The Foxes are also looking to follow up the arrival of the Italy Under-21 international with Abul Fatawu, who spent last season on loan at the King Power Stadium.

Leicester are expected to make the move permanent this summer with an option to buy included in the deal that is worth £14million.

The 20-year-old helped the club return immediately to the Premier League after winning the Championship, making 43 appearances and scoring seven times.

Parag found himself in hot water after his YouTube search history was accidentally exposed during a live stream, revealing searches for ‘hot videos’ of Bollywood actresses Ananya Panday and Sara Ali Khan.

Harshit Rana offers support and humour after Riyan Parag’s YouTube gaffe

Rana downplayed the seriousness of the situation, suggesting it’s a learning experience Parag can laugh off. “We will talk about it if we tour Zimbabwe together. We won’t be letting this go without having a go at him. I will first tell him to stop going Live on social media ever again.” Rana joked, showcasing a supportive yet playful approach.

Parag’s search history went viral, sparking amusement and mild criticism online. However, the incident also highlighted the challenges young cricketers face in the age of social media. ‘I hope Wolves get relegated’ – talkSPORT host responds to Gary O’Neil’s joke

Gary O’Neil has come a long way since working night shifts at talkSPORT.

The former Portsmouth and Middlesbrough regular is currently excelling in management with Premier League side Wolves, and on current form, the highest-rated English talent in coaching.

    2

O’Neil retired from playing in 2019, and stepped up with Bournemouth as a coach in 2022, saving them from relegation before drastically improving Wolves’ fortunes.

Between his playing career ending and his management career starting, O’Neil did have a brief go at punditry, taking up a stint at talkSPORT.

Working alongside former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy, O’Neil co-hosted the Sports Bar from 10pm to 1am in 2020, and was asked about his time with Cundy during an appearance on the Sports Breakfast show.

“Yeah it was possibly a low point, that,” O’Neil said to much laughter.

“Some of those late nights, half 12 at night, the ghost train, so yeah that was probably tougher, I’d rather go four or five without a win than do that again.”

Cundy had the comments put to him, and could not resist a lighthearted jab back.

“Do you know what? I hope they get relegated, Wolves,” he joked.

“Gary is a great lad, but I can’t believe he’s slagging off The Sports Bar!”

Cundy was shocked by his old co-host's comments

    2

Cundy was shocked by his old co-host’s comments

Current co-host Jamie O’Hara couldn’t stop laughing and said: “Look where he’s gone, though. Look at his rise to fame – from The Sports Bar, to Wolves manager, to flying in the Premier League and being talked about as the next England manager.

“And you’re still here! Everyone has moved on up and you’ve gone nowhere!”

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil reveals that the club are financially stable and won’t be forced into selling key players in the summer

Cundy replied: “Still here – and with you! I’ve gone down, mate, not up.

“I’m going to message him, I’m not happy about that, Gaz.”

Such is Wolves’ form under O’Neil that his players are being eyed by teams chasing down Champions League football.

Pedro Neto is one of those, with Arsenal and Tottenham both interested, but the manager said the club are in no rush to sell.

Before they got into their positions to begin, Keane and Wright shared a heartwarming moment.

The NFL fan had been Stateside to see the San Francisco 49ers beat the Packers in their playoff match and remembered to bring back a gift for Wright, who looked over the moon with the present.

“I promised you a present,” he told the former Arsenal striker as Neville and Carragher looked on enviously.

Keane told them: “Sorry, lads! You’re not into your American football, are you?”

Wright took his hat off and immediately put on his 49ers hat, exclaiming in an American accent: “The 49ers, man!

“Thanks, Roy, that’s nice of you!”

Keane then asked before turning somewhat crestfallen: “Are you watching the games, you’re not are you…

Wright replied: “To be honest, nah. But I will do!”

I pushed referee to land whopping ban but Arsenal legend elbowed me to spark sorry scenes

Paolo Di Canio has admitted the Football Association were right to give him an 11-game ban for pushing referee Paul Alcock to the floor.

However, he also believes the official handled the situation poorly, with the Italian earlier receiving an elbow to the face from Arsenal defender Martin Keown.

During the 1998/99 season, Di Canio starred for Sheffield Wednesday but was also at the centre of one of the Premier League‘s wildest moments.

Arsenal made the visit to Hillsborough in September 1998 and on the stroke of half-time Patrick Vieira was tackled by Wim Jonk, with the former pushing over the latter in response.

Di Canio ran up to defend his teammate by shoving the Gunners star and Keown was quick to intervene, although his elbow caught the head of the striker, who kicked out and grabbed the defender’s face.

Referee Alcock showed him a red card but Di Canio pushed him to the ground in anger and was subsequently banned for 11 games.

Speaking on Up Front with talkSPORT host Simon Jordan with William Hill, Di Canio realises why he was given such a lengthy suspension.

“I think the ban I received was right,” he said. “Thinking as a footballer, I would be selfish and say it was too much and it should have only been a three-match ban, but I have to think as a sportsman and I think it was the right message to send.

“It sent a message to others to say that you simply cannot act like that. If they had given me three matches that would have been comparing what I did to a bad challenge, it wouldn’t have sent a real message.

“I would have the matches that I got suspended for in favour of a bigger fine and I tried to ask for that. I asked the FA to take out five or six of the matches from my suspension and fine me more but they stuck to it and I think that was the right thing to do.”

Despite pushing Alcock and admitting he was wrong to do so, Di Canio feels that the referee could have handled the situation better.

“I think [the sending off] came down to me being in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Di Canio said. “There was a challenge between Vieira and Jonk, so I went over to separate them because I played at AC Milan with Vieira.

“Instantly, Keown came over to separate me from them using his elbow, it hit me straight in the nose and the anger went straight to my head. In that moment it felt like street football.

“In my opinion, the referee made a mistake. Obviously, what I did was completely wrong, and we have to let people know that it was the worst example of sportsmanship.

“But a top referee, rather than arrive straight in front of me when I was fighting with the red card, would have waited with the linesman for everybody to calm down for 30 or 40 seconds, then call me over and send me off to give me more time to relax.

“In that moment I was fuming, so when I saw the red card, I just instinctively pushed him as if to say, ‘go away!’

“I don’t want to argue about how he went down because at the end of the day you can’t touch the referee no matter what. He is the authority between two teams so you shouldn’t even go close to him. What I did was completely wrong.”

Duncan Ferguson leaves studio in stitches with response to Jimmy Bullard as they reunite

Duncan Ferguson and Jimmy Bullard were reunited on talkSPORT to hilariously recall their memorable exchange nearly two decades ago.

During the 2005/06 season, Everton travelled to Wigan and drew 1-1 in the Premier League after what as a feisty affair.

Ferguson, now Inverness Caledonian Thistle boss, was introduced to the game by manager David Moyes with a little under 20 minutes to go with the scores level, but he was sent off for landing a blow on Paul Scharner.

Bullard appeared to ask the Scotsman: “Are you alright?” and the ex-Wigan man previously revealed his response was as you’d expect to being told ‘see you in the tunnel’.

“No problem, wee man,” Ferguson replied, before apparently waiting for him at full-time away from cameras.

After 17 years, the duo both joined talkSPORT and laughed about the incident.

“I would never be taking my top off now, mate,” Ferguson laughed, while Bullard joked he melted when confronted.

“Always remember, a good boxer always picks his victims,” Ferguson joked. “You were a wee bit out of your weight class that day!”

Host Ally McCoist, a friend and former teammate of Ferguson’s, then asked Bullard what was he thinking.

“I don’t know what I was thinking to this day! [Wigan teammate] Lee McCulloch said to me, ‘I wouldn’t have done that, Jim’. I don’t know to this day Al, honestly.”

Ferguson then joked about the punishment dished out to him – this is a player who was sent off eight times in his Premier League career.

“I got a seven-game ban that day. I actually got two red cards and I’m glad I never got another one in the tunnel!”

When McCoist added it wasn’t the longest he’s ever been away for, Ferguson made light of his disciplinary record. “I’ve had bigger bans, haven’t I?”

And he couldn’t help another when Bullard mentioned the fact he had been on the bench for most of the game.

“I’ve been on front of the bench a few times as well,” no doubt referencing his time in front of FA disciplinary panels and in court having served 44 days in prison for assault in 1995 when he was 22.

That was a lifetime ago, the former striker, now 51, is back in Scottish football and raring to go.
