The West Indies will be touring the African continent to play against Zimbabwe and South Africa in a bilateral series each in February and March. While their two Tests against Zimbabwe get underway on February 4, the Windies will then pay a visit to the ‘Rainbow Nation’ for a multi-format series comprising two Tests, three ODIs and as many T20Is between February to March 28.

Meanwhile, ahead of the Caribbean Test squad’s departure for Africa tours, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has officially confirmed the Team Management Unit who have been selected to support the interim coach Andre Coley for the next couple of months.

Former Windies pacer Kenny Benjamin has been roped in as the bowling coach while Rayon Griffith is the assistant coach as a part of this unit. Notably, Griffith also serves as the head coach of the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Other than these two, Denis Byam has been roped in as the Team Physio while Rawl Lewis will be in charge as the Team Manager. Avenesh Seetaram (Analyst) and Dario Barthley (Media Officer) complete this new Team Management Unit.

West Indies hoping to prove a point on South African soil

After the Zimbabwe Test series that concludes on February 16, the West Indies will be landing in South Africa where they would be desperate to prove a point or two. The team failed to get past the group stages in the last year’s T20 World Cup and suffered a whitewash against Australia in the Test series down under a month later.

Nonetheless, the Test series does not hold much relevance for the Windies as they are virtually out of the WTC final contention race languishing at the sixth position in the nine-team table. South Africa on the other hand who are at the fourth position will be looking to find an outside chance of making the final cut by blanking the Caribbeans in both the games.

More importantly, the Proteas will also be looking to seal the three ODIs without conceding a game with some precious ICC Super League points at stake.

With their ODI series against South Africa forefeited, the South Africans cannot afford to slip in further in One Dayers which could jeopardise their chances of participating in this year’s 50-over World Cup in India.

Here’s the West Indies Team Management Unit for upcoming Zimbabwe and South Africa tours

Andre Coley – Head Coach (Interim)

    Rayon Griffith – Assistant Coach

    Kenny Benjamin – Bowling Coach

    Denis Byam – Physio

    Rawl Lewis – Team Manager

    Avenesh Seetaram – Analyst

    Dario Barthley – Media Officer

Zimbabwe will be hosting Ireland in the third T20I match at Harare Sports Club in Harare on Sunday (January 15). Ireland, after losing the opening clash by five wickets, won the second T20I by six wickets to level the three-match series.

Zimbabwe failed to carry the momentum from the first game and were bowled out on 144 runs in 20 overs. Captain Craig Ervine top-scored with 42 off 40 while opener Innocent Kaia contributed with 25 off 14. The experienced pacer Grama Hume, who was not part of the first match, was the best bowler for Irealand with three wickets while conceding just 17 runs. Harry Tector also shone with two wickets while Mark Adair and Gareth Delany grabbed one wicket each.

Ireland started well with opener Andy Balbirnie scoring 33 off 31 and Ross Adair scoring his first-ever international fifty (65 off 47). However, Ryan Burl grabbed two wickets to keep Zimbabwe alive in the game. But eventually, the traveling side survived a scare to win the game with just two balls remaining. Zimbabwe lost the game but they have won three of their last four T20I encounters against Ireland.

Former England player Gary Ballance is set to make his T20I debut for Zimbabwe as he was named in the squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series scheduled to be played against Ireland. The two sides will lock horns on January 12 at the Harare Sports Club in Harare to kick-start the T20I series.

Following his release from county cricket side Yorkshire, the left-handed hitter, who represented England in 23 Tests and 16 one-day international matches between 2014 and 2017, will now be playing for his country Zimbabwe. Ballance represented his home country in U19s before moving to England, but he will be back to represent Zimbabwe after being released by his county club Yorkshire.

He is one of four changes that have been made to the team of 15 players from Zimbabwe that competed in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. After receiving permission from Zimbabwe Cricket to play franchise cricket elsewhere, star all-rounder Sikandar Raza, who is up for the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year, ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year, and ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year awards, will not take part in the series against Ireland.

Along with Milton Shumba and wicketkeeper-batsman Regis Chakabva, pace bowler Blessing Muzarabani was not selected due to a quadriceps injury. Other newcomers to the team, in addition to Ballance, include Tadiwanashe Marumani, Innocent Kaia, and Victor Nyauchi. Tendai Chatara, Richard Ngarava, Sean Williams, and skipper Craig Ervine will all be present for the fixtures.

On January 12, 14, and 15, the three T20I games will be contested. All three games are slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. local time. The three-match ODI series between the two teams is scheduled for January 18, 21, and 23, also at Harare Sports Club.
