With\u00a0US swimmer Torri Huske\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0100-meter butterfly\u00a0gold\u00a0medal win\u00a0on Sunday,\u00a0Team USA\u2019s combined tally of 14 swimming medals leads all countries across the Olympics. <\/p>\n But while the current haul is looking healthy, the\u00a0USA\u2019s Olympic swimming gold medal stranglehold<\/a>\u00a0is very much in danger of falling by the wayside.<\/p>\n It\u2019s been 36 years since the coed US swimming squad came up short in the Olympic gold medal race \u2014 at least five years before anyone on today’s team was even born.<\/p>\n That dominance, however, is hanging by a thread as the Australians are gold medal count favorites after running away with the\u00a02023 World Swimming Championships<\/a>.<\/p>\n “Certainly, there are some events\u2026 where we\u2019ve got a significant amount of ground to make up,” US head women\u2019s coach Todd DeSorbo\u00a0told reporters<\/a>. “But I\u2019m confident in the motivation and excitement and commitment of everybody \u2014 men and women \u2014 on the team that are prepared to do that.”<\/p>\n In the seven women\u2019s events so far,\u00a0the US has captured eight medals:\u00a0one gold, four silver, and three bronze.<\/p>\n Joining Huske on Sunday\u2019s 100-meter butterfly podium<\/a> was US teammate and fellow NCAA swimmer Gretchen Walsh<\/a>, who snagged silver just six weeks after becoming the event\u2019s\u00a0world record-holder<\/a>\u00a0at US Trials.<\/p>\n Monday\u2019s 400-meter individual medley also saw two US swimmers medal in their second Olympic Games, with Katie Grimes\u00a0and Emma Weyant taking silver and bronze behind 17-year-old Canadian phenom Summer McIntosh, who won the event by the\u00a0equivalent of a country mile<\/a>.<\/p>\n While Australia’s Kaylee McKeown successfully defended her 100-meter backstroke gold medal on Tuesday \u2014 breaking her own Olympic record in the process \u2014Team USA completed the podium<\/a>.\u00a0Regan Smith<\/a>, who reclaimed the world record from McKeown at last month\u2019s Trials, swam to silver, with first-time Olympian Katharine Berkoff taking bronze.<\/p>\n After dropping to third in Saturday’s 400-meter freestyle,\u00a0seven-time USA gold medalist Katie Ledecky is\u00a0still expected to own\u00a0Wednesday\u2019s\u00a01500-meter freestyle<\/a>, a race she hasn\u2019t lost in 14 years.\u00a0 <\/p>\n A medal in that event would tie Ledecky with three former Team USA athletes as the most decorated Olympic women swimmers\u00a0in history.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\nAustralia takes aim at USA’s Olympic gold medal streak<\/h2>\n
