Limited time offer.<\/a><\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<p>The 31-year-old Chelsea striker, who is mixed race, issued a public apology despite being found not guilty on Wednesday of racially aggravated abuse of a police officer in the early hours of January 30, 2023. <\/p>\n<p>Kerr was recorded calling the policeman \u201cstupid and white\u201d but claimed she did not use \u201cwhiteness as an insult\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The judge said after the verdict: \u201cI take the view her own behaviour contributed significantly to the bringing of this allegation.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Kerr apologised for \u201cexpressing myself poorly on what was a traumatic evening\u201d, with the case threatening to leave an indelible mark on an otherwise unblemished career.<\/p>\n<p>Whether the case has a lasting impact remains to be seen. (Photo by Peter Nicholls\/Getty Images)<\/span><span>Source: Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Well, <a href=\"https:\/\/thewest.com.au\/opinion\/kate-emery-sam-kerr-trial-was-a-waste-of-time-from-the-start-c-17689961\" title=\"thewest.com.au\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The West Australian\u2019s<\/a> Kate Emery went some way to answering that question in an opinion piece where she argued the trial was a \u201cwaste of everyone\u2019s time\u201d, adding the not-guilty verdict was the \u201conly good bit of news\u201d to come out of the entire ordeal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn almighty mess of a bad night that should never have made it to the courts and turned into a two-year-long circus,\u201d Emery added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Kerr, who has Anglo-Indian heritage, acting like a drunken prat when she said those four words to a police officer during a dispute over a taxi fare after a night out? Sure. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas she racially abusing the cop when she did so? Racism is prejudice plus power. Historically, in our western world it is white people who have held the power and non-white people who have not. Overwhelmingly that remains true today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same is also true for women\u2019s safety concerns, as Sam Squiers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com.au\/football\/its-fing-scary-the-heartsinking-reality-revealed-by-kerrs-full-police-tape\/news-story\/1ca884f63e68482f1a6ca648d39d7b87\" title=\"www.foxsports.com.au\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">wrote in a comment piece for <\/a><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com.au\/football\/its-fing-scary-the-heartsinking-reality-revealed-by-kerrs-full-police-tape\/news-story\/1ca884f63e68482f1a6ca648d39d7b87\" title=\"www.foxsports.com.au\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">foxsports.com.au<\/a><\/i>. Nadia Russell of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.watoday.com.au\/national\/who-cares-if-sam-kerr-called-a-policeman-stupid-and-white-i-don-t-20250211-p5lb3j.html\" title=\"www.watoday.com.au\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The Sydney Morning Herald<\/a> also empathised Kerr\u2019s situation while recalling her experience with one Uber driver who got lost and then instead of \u201capologising for the inconvenience\u201d proceeded to \u201cturn on\u201d her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been in Sam Kerr\u2019s shoes, and not only do I completely understand her behaviour during her infamous exchange with a constable in a Twickenham police station, I don\u2019t have a problem with it,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"sc-11i7hbm-0 eUyOEq\"><amp-img alt=\"Kerr has been at the centre of a media storm. (Photo by Dan Kitwood\/Getty Images)<\/span><span>Source: Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meanwhile, former NZ Football Fern and Team Heroine Founder Rebecca Sowden asked on LinkedIn if anyone else felt \u201cuncomfortable\u201d watching the Kerr trial unfold. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore smashing a taxi window to \u2018escape\u2019, Kerr &amp; partner, Kristie Mewis feared they were being kidnapped after the driver locked the doors &amp; windows, drove erratically &amp; wouldn\u2019t stop (after Kerr spit-vomited out the window),\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhenever I take a taxi\/uber, particularly at night I study the driver ID &amp; am on high alert. Sadly, I\u2019m sure many women go through similar \u2018fears\u2019 when doing other \u2018day-to-day\u2019 activities (taxis, jogging, walking to your car at night\u2026). Who was racist to whom? Everyone has a view, and there\u2019s no chance of a universal verdict,\u201d he added, referencing the fact that while many women are \u201csympathetic\u201d to Kerr\u2019s situation, the \u201cfurious commentary\u201d in reaction to the case suggests she has \u201clost a lot of admirers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Kathryn Batte, meanwhile, wrote in a column for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/football\/2025\/02\/11\/sam-kerr-race-trial-verdict-australia-chelsea\/\" title=\"www.telegraph.co.uk\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The Telegraph UK<\/a> that \u201cit is up to Kerr now what story she writes next\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustralia\u2019s golden girl, their sporting superstar and hero showed she was not perfect after all,\u201d wrote Batte.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKerr showed herself to be human. A human who can make a mistake, just like everybody else.
