The ESPN analyst argued that Bird and Curry basically have to go through the same type of defensive tactics to score despite playing eras apart.<\/p>\n<p>On his podcast, \u201cShowtime with Coop,\u201d the five-time NBA champ ripped Redick:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThat guy has no clue of how basketball was played in the 80s and I guarantee you this JJ Redick. If you had played in the 80s\u2026 I would\u2019ve locked your a\u2014 up. The league had different rules back then. Players had more leeway to try and contain opponents.<\/p>\n<p>A hard foul during Larry Bird\u2019s era would have easily merited an ejection, if not a suspension, in today\u2019s NBA. There was more holding, grabbing and illegal screen-settings back then. Since early the 2000s, the league has been implementing measures to protect players, especially those playing offense.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Cooper, the 1986-87 Defensive Player of the Year winner, had numerous battles with the Boston Celtics great in the &#8217;80s. In most of their legendary championship games, it was \u201cCoop\u201d who had the enviable task of locking down one of the NBA\u2019s greatest players.<\/p>\n<p>Cooper knew what it took to try and contain Bird. However, he, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportskeeda.com\/basketball\/news-i-m-going-larry-legend-larry-6-9-6-10-i-m-taking-larry-bird-darvin-ham-emphatically-chooses-larry-bird-take-hypothetical-game-winning-shot-steph-curry-ray-allen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-is-sponsored=\"false\">the LA Lakers and most of the NBA couldn\u2019t do much against \u201cLarry Legend\u201d in his peak.<\/a> Here\u2019s what he had to say about Reddick\u2019s comparison between the Hall of Famer and Curry:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;JJ Redick, this kid here who was a journeyman, he was a poor man&#8217;s Danny Ainge. In today&#8217;s NBA, I don&#8217;t what game he&#8217;s looking at; you can&#8217;t touch a guy. Anytime you touch anybody, a 3-point shooter, come close to them when they&#8217;re landing, it&#8217;s a foul.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Larry Bird was one of the greatest shooters that ever played the game. Fu*k percentages, it ain&#8217;t about that. It&#8217;s about hitting big shots. [photo: NBA.com]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dominique Wilkins, who was the Atlanta Hawks\u2019 best player in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportskeeda.com\/basketball\/larry-bird\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-is-sponsored=\"false\">Larry Bird<\/a>\u2019s best years, played in the same conference as the Boston Celtics great. And like Michael Cooper, he also couldn\u2019t hold back his passionate rebuttal of JJ Redick\u2019s analysis.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s Wilkins also lashing out at JJ Redick for his hot take on SiriusXM NBA:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFirst of all, Redick don\u2019t know what the hell he\u2019s talking about. I\u2019m like, what basketball was he watching? To say something as idiotic as that is ridiculous.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The physicality that was part of the league. \u2026 I just don\u2019t like the disrespect. To say that about Larry Bird \u2014 less physically \u2014 is (Redick) stupid? It\u2019s just a stupid comment to make.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After all the backlash, Redick refused to back down from his comments. In his podcast \u201cThe Old Man and the Three,\u201d he responded to Michael Cooper and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportskeeda.com\/basketball\/dominique-wilkins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-is-sponsored=\"false\">Dominique Wilkins<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI didn\u2019t disrespect Larry Bird. I questioned the narrative around physicality. I said for every montage video you can show me of Larry Bird being in a headlock underneath the basket, I can show you a montage video of him shooting open jumpers. Of him coming off pin-downs.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Yeah, I can show Steph the same way. I can show Steph getting held, I can show Larry getting held.
