Jermaine Jenas has questioned why Tottenham would build a \u201cbig stadium\u201d only to never \u201cinvest properly and challenge for a league title\u201d.<\/p>\n
The north Londoners are without a trophy since their League Cup win in 2008 and were knocked out of the FA Cup by Sheffield United on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The FA Cup was a great chance to end their trophy drought and a defeat to the Championship side was a bitterly disappointing result.<\/p>\n
Tottenham\u2019s best spell in the Premier League came between 2015-16 and 2017-18 when they finished third twice and second once.<\/p>\n
However, since then, they have failed to finish higher than fourth.<\/p>\n
Incidentally, Spurs finished sixth in their first full season in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.<\/p>\n
Having moved into such a wonderful arena after some domestic success \u2013 albeit without the silverware to show for it \u2013 you would have expected the club to really push on and bring in some top-class players to win their first league title since 1961.<\/p>\n
Many Spurs fans have begged the question: \u2018Why would we build this stadium not to push on and compete for the biggest titles?\u2019 and now their former player, Jenas, has asked just that.<\/p>\n
Speaking to FourFourTwo,<\/em> the former midfielder said:<\/a>\u00a0\u201cI sympathise with the fans to an extent. I totally with the standpoint of \u2018What\u2019s the point in building this big stadium and having all this lovely stuff if you\u2019re not going to invest properly and challenge for a league title?\u2019 I think the frustration from the fans is that they seem to just half-heart everything.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s like, are they ever going to get to a window, like this summer and go, \u2018You know what? We need James Maddison: go and get him. We need a top goalkeeper, let\u2019s go and compete for one.\u2019 That never seems to happen.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s always half-hearted and I think that\u2019s where the frustration lies. You\u2019re here now, so go: you\u2019re very close but you\u2019re not prepared to take that next step.\u201d<\/p>\n Jenas also believes Spurs head coach Antonio Conte should leave the club if he is not \u201cbacked\u201d by Daniel Levy.<\/p>\n \u201cThe uncertainty comes, though: I\u2019m not sure Antonio Conte will be there next year,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n \u201cYou look at his career and the cycles are pretty short: he\u2019s coming to the end of another one. I hope he stays if he\u2019s refreshed, supported and backed.
