Neil Gourley struck silver as Great Britain opened their medal account on the second day of the European indoor athletics championships in Istanbul.<\/p>\n
Gourley finished a close second to Norway\u2019s Jakob Ingebrigtsen in the 1500m, while sprinter Daryll Neita (60m) and middle-distance runner Melissa Courtney-Bryant (3,000m) both collected bronzes.<\/p>\n
The Olympic champion Ingebrigtsen held off Glasgow\u2019s Gourley in the home straight to win in a new championship record of 3min 33.95sec. France\u2019s Azeddine Habz took bronze, while Britain\u2019s George Mills finished 11th after falling early on.<\/p>\n Gourley, who clocked 3mins 34.23secs, told BBC Sport: \u201c[Jakob] is one of the best ever to do this, so it was always going to be really hard to come up against someone like that. I believed I could do it. I put myself in the right places and just didn\u2019t quite have it. I got beaten by someone who is better and I\u2019ve got to take it on the chin.\u201d<\/p>\n Neita was among the favourites to win women\u2019s 60m gold, but Switzerland\u2019s Mujinga Kambundji triumphed in a new championship record of 7.00sec. Poland\u2019s Ewa Swodboda took silver in 7.09sec, with Neita three hundredths of a second slower in third.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s always amazing to bring a medal home, but I\u2019m not particularly happy with this result,\u201d said Neita. \u201cI just feel I would have liked more from myself, but it\u2019s a bronze medal and I\u2019ve got to be grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n
