She rode over the line just over two minutes after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/demi-vollering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Demi Vollering<\/a> (SD Worx) claimed victory ahead of her teammate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/lotte-kopecky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lotte Kopecky<\/a> \u2013 who Van Vleuten finished second to last year.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"hawk-nest paywall\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\"\/>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cAt the moment we were at the top, Demi Vollering placed an attack and I hoped that someone from my team could join us, but unfortunately that didn&#8217;t work and I couldn&#8217;t answer that attack anymore, because I had just made an attack myself,&#8221; said Van Vleuten on her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.annemiekvanvleuten.nl\/nieuws\/eerste-wedstrijdblok-afgesloten-met-vijfde-plek-in-strade-bianche\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.annemiekvanvleuten.nl\/nieuws\/eerste-wedstrijdblok-afgesloten-met-vijfde-plek-in-strade-bianche\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">&#8220;She went at a very good time and I just couldn&#8217;t go. Then you know it&#8217;s going to be very difficult, especially when Kopecky and Vollering find each other.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">While the two SD Worx were able to rely on each other to chase down <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/kristen-faulkner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kirsten Faulkner<\/a> (Jayco-AlUla) on the final climb, Van Vleuten didn&#8217;t have the support she wanted, even though Liane Lippert was also in the group when Vollering&#8217;s attack occurred at just over 17km to go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">&#8220;I think we have to get to know each other&#8217;s qualities in the team a little better, so that we can use that in the finals in the next races,&#8221; said Van Vleuten. &#8220;We will evaluate that and take it on board.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Fifth is the Dutch riders lowest placing at Strade Bianche since 2017, and comes after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/news\/i-hit-a-pothole-flat-tyre-ends-annemiek-van-vleutens-omloop-het-nieuwsblad-defence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flat ruined her chances at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad<\/a>,\u00a0though she had entered the Italian race with confidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cAbout my own level I think;\u00a0too bad, it wasn&#8217;t good enough today to win,&#8221; said Van Vleuten.\u00a0&#8220;On the other hand, I also know that it is not very far and you see that the level of women&#8217;s cycling is increasing enormously every year.
