{"id":17747,"date":"2023-03-06T21:03:57","date_gmt":"2023-03-06T21:03:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2023\/03\/06\/van-hooydonck-defends-himself-after-bumping-matthews-in-paris-nice\/"},"modified":"2023-03-06T21:03:57","modified_gmt":"2023-03-06T21:03:57","slug":"van-hooydonck-defends-himself-after-bumping-matthews-in-paris-nice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2023\/03\/06\/van-hooydonck-defends-himself-after-bumping-matthews-in-paris-nice\/","title":{"rendered":"Van Hooydonck defends himself after bumping Matthews in Paris-Nice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>It has long been predicted that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/paris-nice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 Paris-Nice<\/a> would be a fierce battle between Jumbo-Visma and UAE Team Emirates, with the former team backing Jonas Vingegaard against his rival Tadej Poga\u010dar.<\/p>\n<p>Tensions appeared to come to a boil in an unexpected moment during the approach to the intermediate time bonus sprint on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/races\/paris-nice-2023\/stage-2\/results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Monday&#8217;s stage to Fontainebleau<\/a> when Vingegaard&#8217;s teammate Nathan Van Hooydonck appeared to body-check <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/michael-matthews\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Matthews<\/a> (Jayco-AlUla).<\/p>\n<aside class=\"hawk-nest paywall\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\"\/>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The front-on camera shot at first glance appeared to show Matthews drawing alongside Van Hooydonck as UAE Team Emirates led with 13.6km to go and take a hard right into Matthews, causing the Australian to veer sharply and luckily had the skills to keep himself upright.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Commentator Jos\u00e9 De Cauwer winced at the incident, saying Van Hooydonck should be careful because &#8220;VAR is watching&#8221; &#8211; referencing the UCI jury&#8217;s relatively new video replay rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Van Hooydonck fell short of denying Poga\u010dar the six-second time bonus, coming third behind Matthews. He later defended himself in response to <em>Sporza<\/em>&#8216;s post about the clash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">&#8220;I was pushed myself, couldn&#8217;t move. I don&#8217;t think Jos\u00e9 has raced for a long time or needs glasses,&#8221; the Belgian replied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Upon closer inspection, one of the riders in Poga\u010dar&#8217;s lead-out train to Van Hooydonck&#8217;s left can be seen moving to the right in response to a Groupama-FDJ rider attempting to insert himself in the bunch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The resulting shoulder nudge to Van Hooydonck appears to be what sent him careening into Matthews, and the results show that the Jumbo-Visma rider was not penalized for his actions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Poga\u010dar won the sprint, putting himself 12 seconds ahead of Vingegaard in the overall standings ahead of Tuesday&#8217;s team time trial.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall see-more see-more--clipped\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet hawk-ignore\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Ik werd zelf geduwd, kon geen kant op.
