{"id":180107,"date":"2025-05-13T15:32:45","date_gmt":"2025-05-13T15:32:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/13\/court-urged-to-jail-jakob-ingebrigtsens-father-for-regime-of-repeated-abuse\/"},"modified":"2025-05-13T15:32:45","modified_gmt":"2025-05-13T15:32:45","slug":"court-urged-to-jail-jakob-ingebrigtsens-father-for-regime-of-repeated-abuse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/13\/court-urged-to-jail-jakob-ingebrigtsens-father-for-regime-of-repeated-abuse\/","title":{"rendered":"Court urged to jail Jakob Ingebrigtsen\u2019s father for \u2018regime of repeated abuse\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The father of the Norwegian track and field superstar Jakob Ingebrigtsen should go to prison for two and a half years for \u201ca regime of repeated abuse\u201d that spanned a decade, prosecutors have told a court in Norway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Summing up the state\u2019s case, the prosecutor Angjerd Kvernenes said that Jakob and his sister, Ingrid, had suffered physical and mental abuse at the hands of their father and former coach, Gjert, which began when Jakob was seven years old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">In her closing arguments, Kvernenes reminded the court that Jakob, who won the Olympic 1500m title in Tokyo before winning 5,000m gold in Paris, had described how he had been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2025\/mar\/25\/jakob-ingebrigtsen-tells-court-of-fear-and-control-in-testimony-against-father\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">punched and kicked by his father<\/a> when he was still at primary school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cJakob has explained about fear, about unpredictability, and about how the repeated blows to his head when he was seven and a half years old have affected him further in his upbringing,\u201d she said. \u201cThe extent has been so great that Jakob has lived under a regime of repeated abuse over time. It has affected him. He has been affected by this continuous insecurity, fear of violence and fear of other offences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Kvernenes pointed out that on another occasion Jakob said he had been threatened with being dragged out of a car and beaten to death unless he agreed with Gjert.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"4316f601-7719-4f47-977a-54b06a432925\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-1tx6u99\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">Jakob Ingebrigtsen told the court that he had been punched and kicked by his father when he was still at primary school.<\/span> Photograph: Lise \u00c5serud\/AP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cThere is no doubt that there was a culture of fear in the home as early as January 2008 when Jakob was seven years old and Ingrid was one and a half years old,\u201d she said. \u201cThe starting point in these cases is unconditional imprisonment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">According to the indictment, Gjert is also alleged to have used threats, coercion and violence against his 18-year-old daughter, Ingrid, including \u201cwhipping\u201d her in the face with a wet towel in 2022 after he had refused to let her play outside with friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Kvernenes reminded the court that Ingrid has also alleged that Gjert had made her cry by screaming at her while they were in a car together \u2013 and then refused to return home until she promised not to tell anyone about the incident. She said there was \u201cno doubt\u201d that Gjert had also used abusive language towards his daughter and poked her on the chest and upper arm on several occasions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Gjert denies all the charges. Speaking outside court on Tuesday his attorney Heidi Reisvang said the defence would call for an acquittal when they make their closing arguments on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cWe believe that the sentence imposed in this case is far too high,\u201d she told the Norwegian newspaper VG. \u201cWe believe this should not have been a case for the court in the first place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cWe have heard an extremely large number of witnesses.
