The field grew to 16 teams in 1951, doubled again to 32 in 1975 and reached 64 teams in 1985.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2011, four games, known as the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fdtlrhk-jitklkutdj-b\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">First Four<\/a>,\u201d were added prior to the first round to give us the 68 teams we see today. The chaos.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The term \u201cMarch Madness\u201d was first used in 1939<\/strong> for an Illinois high school basketball tournament but it wasn\u2019t associated with the college tourney until broadcaster <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fdtlrhk-jitklkutdj-n\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brent Musburger<\/a> used it during his 1982 coverage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The first women\u2019s NCAA tournament <\/strong>began in 1982 \u2014 notably 43 years after the men\u2019s debut \u2014 with 32 teams. The field expanded to 64 teams in 1994, and last year was the first tourney to feature an expansion to <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fdtlrhk-jitklkutdj-p\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">68 teams<\/a>. Better late than never.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"-how-it-works\">\ud83e\udd14 How it works<\/h3>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p><strong>All 361 women\u2019s and 363 men\u2019s Division I NCAA squads<\/strong> have the goal of playing in March (<em>and<\/em> in April\u2019s title games), and there are a couple of ways they can get there.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Thirty-two automatic <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fdtlrhk-jitklkutdj-x\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">berths<\/a> are given to the 32 teams who win their conference tournaments. Teams that don\u2019t win their conference tourneys hope their season performance will earn them an at-large bid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>A committee of 12 members makes the final (fairly subjective) decision<\/strong> on the aforementioned \u201cat-large\u201d teams using the <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fdtlrhk-jitklkutdj-m\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET)<\/a>. There are sure to be some disappointed squads who don\u2019t get in, so prepare yourself for some, ahem, <em>colorful<\/em> reactions tonight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>After Selection Sunday, the stakes skyrocket in the single-elimination tournaments.<\/strong> Teams are broken up into four regional brackets \u2014 the East, West, Midwest and South \u2014 each with at least 16 teams. Lose one game and it\u2019s sayonara to your season, a dynamic that always brings exciting and shocking upsets.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"-bracketology\">\ud83d\udcc8 Bracketology<\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.takeshape.io\/71fc3568-3ff2-4a40-a6dc-fed792e2222a\/dev\/b0e0cd55-6d02-41d2-baed-0d6173f45430\/SS-312-2.jpeg\"\/><figcaption> <span class=\"credit\"><\/p>\n<p>SOURCE: NCAA<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>One of the best parts of March Madness?<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fdtlrhk-jitklkutdj-c\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The brackets<\/a>. While it\u2019s fun to sit back and witness college basketball at its best, it&#8217;s even better when bragging rights (and money) are on the line.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The March Madness bracket craze began in a <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fdtlrhk-jitklkutdj-q\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Staten Island bar<\/a> in 1977 when 88 people joined a prize pool and filled out their own tournament predictions.<\/li>\n<li>By 2006, 150,000 people entered the same Staten Island bar challenge, where the prize pooled to $1.5 million. The Feds took notice and shut down the unofficial competition, but the bracket tradition was already alive and well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Millions of people are expected to fill out a tournament bracket this year<\/strong> despite the <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fdtlrhk-jitklkutdj-a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one in 9.2 quintillion<\/a> chance of making 100% perfect picks. People from all walks of life join in on the fun, including former President <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fdtlrhk-jitklkutdj-f\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barack Obama<\/a>, Jimmy Fallon, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fdtlrhk-jitklkutdj-z\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">J-Law<\/a>, to name a few.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Whether your picks are based on a team\u2019s record, star players, mascots, uniforms, colors or just <em>vibes<\/em>, why not <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fdtlrhk-jitklkutdj-v\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">join in on the fun<\/a>?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"-a-mad-legacy\">\ud83c\udfc0 A mad legacy<\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.takeshape.io\/71fc3568-3ff2-4a40-a6dc-fed792e2222a\/dev\/5e80d1a8-7e05-4408-a781-0c05bc187add\/SS-legacy.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><strong>With over 80 years of history and a whole lot of fanfare,<\/strong> there are, of course, noteworthy March Madness records and iconic moments we <em>have<\/em> to revisit each year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\ud83c\udfc6 Winning dynasties: <\/strong>UConn\u2019s women\u2019s basketball team holds the record for the most national titles with 11, and head coach (HC) Geno Auriemma \u2014 who\u2019ll dance for the <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fdtlrhk-jitklkutdj-jj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">34th (!!!) consecutive time<\/a> this year \u2014 has been at the helm for all of them.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Auriemma\u2019s 2014 Huskies \u2014 featuring future WNBA star Breanna Stewart \u2014 played a perfect 40-0 season to win their ninth \u2019ship, and they were perfect <em>again<\/em> in 2016 for the program\u2019s fourth straight title.<\/li>\n<li>On the fella\u2019s side, under legendary HC <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fdtlrhk-jitklkutdj-jt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Wooden<\/a>, UCLA dominated in the \u201960s and early \u201970s.<strong> <\/strong>The Bruins won seven national titles <em>in a row<\/em> for a total of 11, the most in men\u2019s March Madness history.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\ud83d\udc8e <strong>Most magical Cinderellas: <\/strong>Everyone loves an underdog. And last year, the men\u2019s squad from Saint Peter\u2019s University became the first No. 15 seed to <em>ever<\/em> make the Elite Eight. Their run stole both hearts and <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fdtlrhk-jitklkutdj-ji\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">top spots on trending lists<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Donning glass slippers for the gals? Gonzaga\u2019s 2011 Bulldogs, who rode a <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fdtlrhk-jitklkutdj-jd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">21-game win streak<\/a> as a No. 11 seed straight to the Elite Eight \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fdtlrhk-jitklkutdj-jh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only team<\/a> that year not seeded Nos. 1 or 2 to do so.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\ude22 Upset city: <\/strong>In 2018, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) gave us the biggest upset in men\u2019s March Madness history. Five years ago, the Retrievers beat No. 1 Virginia by a whopping 74\u201454, becoming the first and only men\u2019s No. 16 seed to take down a No. 1 seed.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On the women\u2019s side, Harvard became the first No. 16 seed to <em>ever<\/em> defeat a No. 1 seed with their <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fdtlrhk-jitklkutdj-jk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">71\u201367 victory<\/a> over Stanford in 1998. Underdog who?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\ude05 Coming in clutch: <\/strong>As for buzzer-beating thrillers, Villanova put on a show in 2016 when Kris Jenkins hit a <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fdtlrhk-jitklkutdj-ju\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game-winning three-pointer<\/a> to push the Wildcats past UNC 77\u201474 and take home the national title. Then in the 2021 semis, Gonzaga\u2019s Jalen Suggs sunk a <em>deep<\/em> three at the buzzer to snatch the Zags a 93\u201390 overtime dub from UCLA. <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fdtlrhk-jitklkutdj-tl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instant classic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The queen of Madness game-winners is Arike Ogunbowale (pronounced ah-REE-kay oh-GOON-bow-WAH-lay), who <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fdtlrhk-jitklkutdj-tr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sank<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fdtlrhk-jitklkutdj-ty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>two<\/em><\/a> in the 2018 Final Four to give Notre Dame their first NCAA title in 17 years. <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fdtlrhk-jitklkutdj-tj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mamba mentality<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"-how-to-watch\">\ud83d\udcfa How to watch<\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.takeshape.io\/71fc3568-3ff2-4a40-a6dc-fed792e2222a\/dev\/db4ea087-cf0b-40c5-a3ff-807b81915204\/SS-madness.png\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><strong>The Madness will crisscross the country from March 14th to April 3rd, <\/strong>with the men\u2019s tournament culminating in Houston, TX, while the women\u2019s tourney will crown their champ just up the road in Dallas. Yeehaw.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All eyes will be on the Selection Shows tonight. <\/strong>As mentioned, the fellas\u2019 bracket will drop on CBS at 6 p.m. ET, followed by the women\u2019s on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET.
