{"id":19734,"date":"2023-03-15T02:21:01","date_gmt":"2023-03-15T02:21:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2023\/03\/15\/tom-pidcock-takes-aim-at-milan-san-remo-after-strade-bianche-success\/"},"modified":"2023-03-15T02:21:01","modified_gmt":"2023-03-15T02:21:01","slug":"tom-pidcock-takes-aim-at-milan-san-remo-after-strade-bianche-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2023\/03\/15\/tom-pidcock-takes-aim-at-milan-san-remo-after-strade-bianche-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Tom Pidcock takes aim at Milan-San Remo after Strade Bianche success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Having already won Strade Bianche, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/tom-pidcock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tom Pidcock<\/a> now takes aim at Saturday\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/milan-san-remo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Milan-San Remo,<\/a> convinced he can go with the expected attacks on the Poggio, use his proven bike skills on the descent to the finish line and thus have a chance of adding a second Classic to his 2023 palmares.<\/p>\n<p>The Ineos Grenadiers rider will take on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/tadej-pogacar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tadej Poga\u010dar<\/a> (UAE Team Emirates), Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma), Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck), 2022 winner Matej Mohori\u010d (Bahrain Victorious) and a host of sprinters and other Classics riders hoping to win <em>La Primavera<\/em>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"hawk-nest paywall\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\"\/>\n<p class=\"paywall\">It will be the 23-year-old Yorkshireman&#8217;s third ride at Milan-San Remo and only his seventh major Classic. Still, Pidcock\u2019s solo victory at Strade Bianche once again highlighted his huge talents and elevated him to the role of Milan-San Remo favourite, something he seems to accept and embrace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI\u2019m on great form. Milan-San Remo is certainly a race I want to win at some point but I also know it&#8217;s also a really difficult race to win,\u201d he tells <em>Cyclingnews <\/em>and other media who attended Tirreno-Adriatico, with his typical blunt honesty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Pidcock will share team Ineos leadership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/filippo-ganna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Filippo Ganna<\/a>, with vital support from 2017 Milan-San Remo winner Micha\u0142 Kwiatkowski, who has moved into a support and mentoring role for the young British rider.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cHe can step up on the big occasions,\u201d Ineos team manager Rod Ellingworth told <em>Cyclingnews, <\/em>praising Pidock after his Strade Bianche victory. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cYou can see the special riders, they step up like that. Think about the Tour de France last year when he won on L\u2019Alpe d\u2019Huez, the mountain bike race at the Olympics. They&#8217;re all big, big moments, so seeing him do that again was impressive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/road\/teams\/uci-worldtour\/2023\/ineos-grenadiers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ineos Grenadiers<\/a> will be hoping Pidcock can win big again at Milan-San Remo. The Italian race is perhaps the Classic least suited to Pidcock\u2019s characteristics but that does not deter him or lessen his love for the race. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cIt&#8217;s maybe one of the most boring races at first but then it becomes one of the most exciting. You ride 200km to race 100km but that&#8217;s also what makes it so beautiful,\u201d he enthuses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cMilan-San Remo is an honest race. You go (attack) on the Poggio and you know at the top where you are. It also has got incredible history, so it is like the other Monument races.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">One day Pidcock will surely target the general classification at the Tour de France but for now he prefers to enjoy the emotions of one-day races.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI think there&#8217;s something special about the one-day races, more than stage races and Grand Tours,\u201d he says, a race analogy revealing much about his personal philosophy. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cIt\u2019s about how everything is on the line on one day. That makes the romance of the race quite unique. But even he has to go hard to do it and so can pay for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Pidcock refutes the idea that he and other rivals fear Poga\u010dar\u2019s attacks. He clearly respects his Slovenian rival but also sees a weakness or opportunity in his dominance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cIn Milan-San Remo everyone will be looking at him and that\u2019ll make it difficult for him,\u201d Pidcock argues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">He shows the same disdain for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/road\/teams\/uci-worldtour\/2023\/team-jumbo-visma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jumbo-Visma<\/a>\u2019s possible strength in number.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cMilan-San Remo is about your best guy. Strength in numbers is irrelevant because the strongest guy is the guy who tries to get to the top of the Poggio in the front group,\u201d Pidcock says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/news\/mohoric-ive-destroyed-cycling-now-everyone-will-use-a-dropper-post\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matej Mohori\u010d\u2019s use of a dropper post<\/a> to make a daredevil descent last year highlighted how Milan-San Remo can be won on the descent of the Poggio. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The Bahrain Victorious rider is expected to try the same tactic this year but Pidcock is not convinced a dropper-post strategy can make a difference more than once, especially if Pidcock is on his wheel or ready to take similar risks on the testing descent of the Poggio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cIt is a dangerous downhill with the walls, so it&#8217;s not the safest place to push full gas but I think he won due to the circumstance of the race too,\u201d Pidcock argues with due respect. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cPoga\u010dar was on his wheel and he&#8217;s not going to risk his whole season to stay with him, when he wants to win the Tour de France, so it&#8217;s very circumstantial whether you can attack on the Milan-San Remo descent and win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Pidcock perhaps has a different strategy in mind, that comes from the traditional Milan-San Remo attackers play book: Go with the Poggio attacks, stay upfront and be vigilant on the descent of the Poggio and then fight for victory in a small group sprint.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">That way he can perhaps take on Poga\u010dar, Van Aert and anyone else.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI think everyone&#8217;s going to be expecting an attack on the descent, so maybe it&#8217;s not the best tactic to try to win the race, though descending skills can certainly be a benefit,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"apos-i-now-know-what-i-x2019-m-capable-of-achieving-apos-2\" class=\"paywall\">&#8216;I now know what I\u2019m capable of achieving&#8217;<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"paywall van-image-figure inline-layout\" data-bordeaux-image-check=\"\">\n<div class=\"image-full-width-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"image-widthsetter\" style=\"max-width:1024px;\">\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:67.48%;\"><picture><source type=\"image\/webp\" alt=\"Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) charges through the crowds on the final climb on his way to victory at Strade Bianche 2023\" class=\" lazy-image-van\" onerror=\"if(this.src &amp;&amp; The team has not issued a further update on Pidcock\u2019s condition but he is expected in Abbiategrasso near Milan for Friday\u2019s team presentation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">He admitted that his first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/news\/tom-pidcock-crashes-out-of-tirreno-adriatico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crash at Tirreno-Adriatico<\/a> awoke him from his post-Strade Bianche victory haze. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI had no clue about Tirreno other than that it was from Monday to Sunday, my attention was all on Strade,\u201d Pidcock says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cMentally I was still living Strade Bianche a little bit. Weirdly, I didn&#8217;t mind crashing that much, it made me feel a little bit more alive, more awake,\u201d he told Flemish television channel VTM, highlighting the significance of his Strade Bianche win.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWhen I was younger, I didn\u2019t really take in victories but Strade Bianche was special because it was I think the hardest step-up I&#8217;ve made in my career so far.
