I love them.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure class=\"sc-11i7hbm-0 eUyOEq\"><amp-img alt=\"Max Balard celebrates after scoring two minutes into his debut.\" src=\"https:\/\/content.api.news\/v3\/images\/bin\/ac06cd04fba6a027dfcf2d06aa646165\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.api.news\/v3\/images\/bin\/ac06cd04fba6a027dfcf2d06aa646165?width=320 320w, https:\/\/content.api.news\/v3\/images\/bin\/ac06cd04fba6a027dfcf2d06aa646165?width=640 640w, https:\/\/content.api.news\/v3\/images\/bin\/ac06cd04fba6a027dfcf2d06aa646165?width=768 768w\" layout=\"responsive\" attribution=\"test\" class=\"i-amphtml-layout-responsive i-amphtml-layout-size-defined\" i-amphtml-layout=\"responsive\"><i-amphtml-sizer style=\"display:block;padding-top:75%\"\/><\/amp-img><figcaption class=\"sc-11i7hbm-1 gSnntl\"><span>Max Balard celebrates after scoring two minutes into his debut.<\/span><span>Source: Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Balard and Toure helped spark the Socceroos late in the game along with other replacements Nestory Irankunda and Nicolas Milanovic, who made his national team debut.<\/p>\n<p>Teenage sensation Irankunda\u2019s introduction particularly excited the Canberra crowd, with the Watford star almost giving the Socceroos the lead in the 82md minute with a header that flew over the crossbar.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Australians didn\u2019t have to wait much longer for a goal, with Balard\u2019s strike sinking the All Whites, who looked the better of the teams for much of the contest.<\/p>\n<p>The woodwork denied the Socceroos in the fourth minute when a cross from left-back Jordan Bos deflected off New Zealand midfielder Joe Bell before crashing into the post.<\/p>\n<p>The All Whites then took control, with playmaker Sarpreet Singh unleashing with a long-distance strike in the 12th minute that had Izzo scrambling before flying just wide of the post.<\/p>\n<p>Singh was again prominent six minutes later, feeding New Zealand captain Chris Wood, who seemed certain to score, only to be denied by a fine save from Socceroos goalkeeper Paul Izzo.<\/p>\n<p>At 30, Denmark-based Izzo made his Socceroos debut, getting the nod ahead of Joe Gauci and Tom Glover in the absence of first-choice custodian Mat Ryan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a difficult choice because all three are worthy of it \u2026 but Paul\u2019s had consistency,\u201d Socceroos coach Tony Popovic said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s been around a while and I just feel that he deserves an opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the stroke of half-time, Izzo again came to Australia\u2019s rescue with another wonderful save to again foil the dangerous Wood.<\/p>\n<p>With regular skipper Mat Ryan missing, as well as his usual deputy Jackson Irvine, experienced defender Milos Degenek captained Australia in his 50th appearance for the Socceroos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really special, especially for me, coming from where I\u2019ve come,\u201d Degenek, whose family moved to Australia as refugees from war-torn Belgrade when he was six, said\/<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo get to wear the captain\u2019s armband, forget the 50 caps, is something special. Representing our country, representing the people, and to lead these boys out is something special, something I\u2019ll never forget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFifty caps is something phenomenal. I\u2019m hoping this journey continues for a little while longer, and I get a few more caps.
