{"id":20992,"date":"2023-03-20T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-20T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2023\/03\/20\/womens-march-madness-is-attracting-record-levels-of-investment\/"},"modified":"2023-03-20T04:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-03-20T04:00:00","slug":"womens-march-madness-is-attracting-record-levels-of-investment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2023\/03\/20\/womens-march-madness-is-attracting-record-levels-of-investment\/","title":{"rendered":"Women&#8217;s March Madness is attracting record levels of investment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<h3 id=\"-the-backdrop\">\ud83d\udd19 The backdrop<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Sedona Prince\u2019s TikTok was the straw<\/strong> <strong>that broke the camel\u2019s back.<\/strong> Her <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fhyjijd-jtkdjltkkr-u\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">37\u2013second video<\/a> not only documented the vast difference in the men\u2019s and women\u2019s weight rooms during the 2021 NCAA basketball championships, it also exposed a <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fhyjijd-jtkdjltkkr-o\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">history of sexism<\/a> in college sports that has left women\u2019s athletics consistently underfunded and undervalued.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Public outrage prompted the NCAA<\/strong> <strong>to undergo a gender equity review <\/strong>that same year, and to no one\u2019s surprise, the findings <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fhyjijd-jtkdjltkkr-b\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weren\u2019t pretty<\/a>. According to the review, the NCAA didn\u2019t have a system or infrastructure in place to ensure gender equity, and its habits proved as much.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As an example, if you divided the NCAA\u2019s Division I (DI) championship budgets by the number of competing athletes during the 2018\u201319 season, the organization spent $4,285 per male player and just $2,588 per female counterpart.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The NCAA\u2019s business practices were also flawed.<\/strong> It didn\u2019t consider women\u2019s sports to be revenue-producing (<em>*rolls eyes*<\/em>), and consequently undervalued the value of women\u2019s sports\u2019 TV contracts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For instance, outside of men\u2019s March Madness and the College Football Playoff, 24 other NCAA championships were sold in a <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fhyjijd-jtkdjltkkr-n\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bundle to ESPN<\/a> for $500M in 2011, including women\u2019s March Madness broadcast rights.<\/li>\n<li>This sale significantly underestimated the value of women\u2019s tournament rights, given that these are worth $81 \u2013 $112M <em>on their own<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The findings of the review were a wake-up call<\/strong> <strong>for the NCAA<\/strong>, which followed up with some major business changes. For the first time last year, the women\u2019s tournament <em>finally<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fhyjijd-jtkdjltkkr-p\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enjoyed equal branding<\/a> with its male counterpart \u2014 it was able to use the title \u201cMarch Madness,\u201d and both Final Fours have either \u201cMen\u2019s\u201d or \u201cWomen\u2019s\u201d in the official name.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The update created inclusive branding <em>and<\/em> provided the women\u2019s tournament with one of American sports\u2019 most valuable marketing assets. It also increased name recognition for fans, and business opportunities for advertisers. Boom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"-the-impact\">\ud83d\udcc8 The impact<\/h3>\n<figure><figcaption> <span class=\"credit\"><\/p>\n<p>SOURCE: ANDY LYONS\/GETTY IMAGES<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Once the NCAA gave women\u2019s basketball the opportunity,<\/strong> they took it and ran with it. Women\u2019s March Madness set all kinds of records last year. Nearly 5M people <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fhyjijd-jtkdjltkkr-x\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">watched the final<\/a>, which became the most-watched college women\u2019s hoops game since 2004, while the tournament averaged 634K viewers per game, up 16% from 2021.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The trend is continuing this year.<\/strong> Regular season TV viewership <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fhyjijd-jtkdjltkkr-a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased 11%<\/a> from 2022, while ESPN\u2019s broadcast of South Carolina\u2013LSU became the most-watched college women\u2019s hoops regular season game since 2010 with 1.5M people <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fhyjijd-jtkdjltkkr-f\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tuning in<\/a>. But\u2026no one watches women\u2019s sports.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Broadcasters are finally airing women\u2019s hoops on well-known TV channels and during desirable times, and, to no one\u2019s surprise, the networks are reaping rewards. The South Carolina\u2013LSU game was promoted as an additional big game on Super Bowl Sunday, while this year\u2019s March Madness championship game <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fhyjijd-jtkdjltkkr-z\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">will be<\/a> on ABC.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Sponsors, of course, have taken note.<\/strong> ESPN <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fhyjijd-jtkdjltkkr-v\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sold all of its advertising inventory<\/a> a few weeks before the women\u2019s tourney tipped off both last year and this year. And now that <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fhyjijd-jtkdjltkkr-e\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">college athletes<\/a> can sign name, image and likeness (NIL) deals with companies, the gals have taken advantage of the opportunity.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Among all athletes competing in last year\u2019s Sweet 16, UConn\u2019s (now injured) Paige Bueckers and Louisville\u2019s Hailey Van Lith earned the most per social media post. Bueckers\u2019 posts <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fhyjijd-jtkdjltkkr-s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were worth<\/a> almost $63K on average, while Van Lith\u2019s were worth $44K a pop.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"-the-roadblocks\">\ud83d\uded1 The roadblocks<\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.takeshape.io\/71fc3568-3ff2-4a40-a6dc-fed792e2222a\/dev\/3b90ad0b-dc9f-4ead-9e7d-f6ba7283c859\/GettyImages-1474018194.075938.jpg\"\/><figcaption> <span class=\"credit\"><\/p>\n<p>SOURCE: MICHAEL REAVES\/GETTY IMAGES<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>While the college basketball gender gap<\/strong> <strong>is closing,<\/strong> room for improvement remains. Look no further than the NCAA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fhyjijd-jtkdjltkkr-g\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revenue distribution program<\/a>: the college sports organization will dole out $638M to DI schools in funding and support this year, but $171M will be distributed based <em>solely<\/em> on how schools performed during <em>men\u2019s<\/em> March Madness.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Change might be on the way, though. In January, the NCAA <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fhyjijd-jtkdjltkkr-w\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approved recommendations<\/a> from a reform committee, who suggested that the organization consider gender equity, other sports and sponsorships when retooling the revenue-sharing model.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The NCAA still hasn\u2019t budged<\/strong> <strong>on the college basketball HC gender pay gap, though.<\/strong> South Carolina\u2019s Dawn Staley is the highest-paid HC in women\u2019s hoops, <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fhyjijd-jtkdjltkkr-yd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raking in $3.1M a year<\/a>. However, the top five men\u2019s basketball HCs all <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fhyjijd-jtkdjltkkr-yh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">collect significantly more<\/a>, with top earner John Calipari of Kentucky earning more than double the salary of Staley.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"-the-evolving-landscape\">\ud83c\udd95 The evolving landscape<\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.takeshape.io\/71fc3568-3ff2-4a40-a6dc-fed792e2222a\/dev\/a202cc44-2a23-4641-ab12-2699bd7a0a7a\/GettyImages-1239815600.080214.jpg\"\/><figcaption> <span class=\"credit\"><\/p>\n<p>SOURCE: DAVID E. A decision <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fhyjijd-jtkdjltkkr-jy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">will likely arrive this year<\/a>. The anticipation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>College hoops\u2019 relationship with the WNBA<\/strong> <strong>is also transforming <\/strong>due to the NIL era. Junior Paige Bueckers missed this season with a knee injury, but despite being eligible to enter the W draft this year, she already <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fhyjijd-jtkdjltkkr-jj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confirmed she\u2019s returning to UConn<\/a>. Between the injury and the pandemic, Bueckers still has three years of NCAA eligibility.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>And she just might play every last one of those years. Experts estimate that she\u2019ll <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fhyjijd-jtkdjltkkr-jt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rake in more sponsorship dollars<\/a> as a college sports icon than as a WNBA rookie, and she may not reach those financial heights again unless she becomes a star in the pros.<\/li>\n<li>Others, though, believe that rising stars who are able to make a name for themselves <em>before<\/em> joining the WNBA <a href=\"https:\/\/thegist.createsend1.com\/t\/t-l-fhyjijd-jtkdjltkkr-ji\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">will bolster<\/a> the league\u2019s profile with fans who are still unfamiliar with it. In other words?
