Manchester City signed Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi on a five-and-a-half-year contract for a reported fee of \u00a320 million ($39 million AUD) on Monday. <\/p>\n

City stepped up their pursuit of the England international after suffering an injury crisis at centre-half.<\/p>\n

Guehi, who came close to joining Liverpool on transfer deadline day in September, is City\u2019s second signing of the January transfer window after their capture of Ghana winger Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth for about \u00a365 million ($129 million AUD).<\/p>\n

\u201cI am really happy and incredibly proud to be a Manchester City player,\u201d Guehi said. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis move feels like the culmination of all the hard work I have put into my career. I am now at the best club in England and part of an unbelievable squad of players. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt feels good to be able to say that. I want to grow as a player and a person, and I know at this club that\u2019s going to happen.\u201d City boss Pep Guardiola praised his club for sealing the deal for the highly sought after defender. <\/p>\n

\u201cA top central defender, playing for the national team. Personally, thanks to the club to bring him here because he\u2019s combat the perfect age, he can play right and left,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

\u201cI know how much he wanted to choose us. With the problems that we have in the back in the next few months it\u2019s really, reallyimportant he\u2019s here. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m pretty sure if he had a long contract at Crystal Palace it would have been impossible, but the fact that it\u2019s six months(left), end of contract, the situation was easier in those terms.\u201d The Chelsea academy graduate played 188 times for Palace after moving to Selhurst Park from the Blues in 2021. <\/p>\n

He captained Palace to FA Cup glory against City in May — the first major trophy in the south London club\u2019s history — andhas won 26 England caps. <\/p>\n

Other teams reportedly interested in the defender, including Liverpool once again and Bayern Munich, were understood to betargeting a move at the end of the season, when Guehi would have been a free agent. <\/p>\n

Guardiola\u2019s men, dethroned as Premier League champions by Liverpool last year, are second in the table, seven points behindleaders Arsenal. <\/p>\n

Central defenders John Stones, Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol all missed from Saturday\u2019s 2-0 defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford. <\/p>\n

The club are also still challenging for silverware in the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.<\/p>\n

Guardiola has overseen an expensive rebuild of his squad over the past year, with a clutch of long-serving players exitingthe club, including Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Ederson. <\/p>\n

LATEST TRANSFER RUMOURS<\/b><\/p>\n

Liverpool are aiming to bolster their defensive stocks with Arne Slot targeting Inter Milan star Alessandro Bastoni<\/b>.<\/p>\n

The defending champions were beaten by title rivals City to Guehi\u2019s signature and have quickly identified their next target, according to TEAMTalk.<\/p>\n

Bastoni, 26, has previously spoken publicly about his admiration of Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk sparking speculation a deal could be on the cards.<\/p>\n

Chelsea, meanwhile, are looking to splash the cash with a deal for 20-year-old defender Jeremy Jacquet <\/b>from Rennes,<\/p>\n

According to RMC Sports, the French club has said the asking price at $88 million AUD which the Blues could be willing to pay. The France under-21 star is under contract until 2029 with no release clause.<\/p>\n

British media reports Chelsea met with Jacquet and his agent as the club moves to bring forward plans to sign a centre back now instead of in the summer.<\/p>\n

Manchester United is reportedly in a battle with Spurs and Aston Villa for Juventus defender Pierre Kalulu.<\/b><\/p>\n

Calciomercato reports the 35-year-old, whose move to Turin was made permanent last summer, would cost $52 million but would likely only join at the end of the season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
