But it should not detract from Seixas&#8217; week at the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/volta-ao-algarve\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/volta-ao-algarve\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/volta-ao-algarve\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Volta ao Algarve<\/a>. The 19-year-old is the real deal, and he no longer represents cycling&#8217;s future but also its present.<\/p>\n<aside data-component-name=\"Recirculation:ArticleRiver\" data-recirculation-type=\"inline\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Trending Bar\" data-nosnippet=\"\" class=\"clear-both pt-3 pb-4 mb-4 border-solid border-y border-neutral-300\">\n<span class=\"font-article-heading block pb-3 !text-base font-bold uppercase sm:text-sm text-[#333]\"><br \/>\nYou may like<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Back to that 1.2km-to-go mark on the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/racing\/volta-ao-algarve-juan-ayuso-wins-final-stage-summit-finish-to-take-overall-title\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/racing\/volta-ao-algarve-juan-ayuso-wins-final-stage-summit-finish-to-take-overall-title\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/racing\/volta-ao-algarve-juan-ayuso-wins-final-stage-summit-finish-to-take-overall-title\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">final stage<\/a> and Matthew Riccitello jumps forward and makes a huge push from a lead group that&#8217;s down to just six riders. Seixas jumps into the slipstream and it looks like we&#8217;re ready for launch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">However, when Riccitello pulls aside 600 metres from the top, there&#8217;s no big attack, and when he drops the pace with 400 to go, Juan Ayuso and Oscar Onley nip around and go on to sprint it out. Seixas never loses contact but very much trails home rather than playing any further part in the contest for the stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Perhaps we shouldn&#8217;t expect too much from these teenagers after all. He notched the first win of his career atop the Alto da F\u00f3ia on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/racing\/volta-ao-algarve-paul-seixas-eclipses-juan-ayuso-and-joao-almeida-atop-alto-da-foia-for-stage-2-victory\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/racing\/volta-ao-algarve-paul-seixas-eclipses-juan-ayuso-and-joao-almeida-atop-alto-da-foia-for-stage-2-victory\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/racing\/volta-ao-algarve-paul-seixas-eclipses-juan-ayuso-and-joao-almeida-atop-alto-da-foia-for-stage-2-victory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stage 2<\/a> with a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/tag\/performance\/\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/tag\/performance\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/tag\/performance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">performance<\/a> that was sensational given his limited experience. With Ayuso glued to his wheel and Jo\u00e3o Almeida dangling off it \u2013 such was the sustained power \u2013 Seixas rode on the front for well over a kilometre. Ayuso arguably had more power and speed in the locker but he simply couldn&#8217;t find a way past.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Paul was more intelligent than me,&#8221; Ayuso acknowledged at the finish, and it was an important comment.<\/p>\n<p>The Spaniard is hardly an old hand, still just 23 years of age, but he has over four full years of experience in the pro peloton. He didn&#8217;t win the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/racing\/volta-ao-algarve-favourite-filippo-ganna-wins-stage-3-time-trial-while-juan-ayuso-adds-time-for-gc-lead\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/racing\/volta-ao-algarve-favourite-filippo-ganna-wins-stage-3-time-trial-while-juan-ayuso-adds-time-for-gc-lead\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/racing\/volta-ao-algarve-favourite-filippo-ganna-wins-stage-3-time-trial-while-juan-ayuso-adds-time-for-gc-lead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stage 3<\/a> time trial, and it gave him an uphill struggle in the general classification, but his fourth place was nevertheless an immensely promising result.<\/p>\n<p>Losing just 13 seconds to powerhouse Filippo Ganna on a largely flat 19.5 kilometres is some achievement, and there were telling comparisons below him on the results sheet, too \u2013 15 seconds faster than TT specialist Stefan K\u00fcng, and around half a minute up on Almeida and Red Bull&#8217;s duo of Florian Lipowitz and Dani Mart\u00ednez.<\/p>\n<p>Seixas has had some eye-catching time trials, including in his debut season last year, but the jury has still been out regarding his true abilities against the clock \u2013 most simply due to a lack of available evidence.<\/p>\n<p>This ride in the Algarve, though, would suggest he very much does possess that critical weapon in the armoury of any credible Grand Tour contender. Perhaps the question marks over Seixas&#8217; time trialling credentials have been fuelled by France&#8217;s recent history in that respect. Bernard Hinault, as if it needs repeating, remains the last home winner of the men&#8217;s Tour de France, all the way back in 1985. The early career of Paul Seixas will, inevitably, be framed within that narrative, no matter what he or his team do about it.<\/p>\n<p>Victory in the Algarve would have only fuelled that fire, not least in the context of more recent history \u2013 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/news\/pogacar-lives-up-to-billing-with-mountaintop-victory-at-volta-ao-algarve\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/news\/pogacar-lives-up-to-billing-with-mountaintop-victory-at-volta-ao-algarve\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/news\/pogacar-lives-up-to-billing-with-mountaintop-victory-at-volta-ao-algarve\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tadej Poga\u010dar won the Volta after winning atop F\u00f3ia<\/a> in his first season, Remco Evenepoel did the same in his second.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everyone is different, everyone has their own path. There are similarities, but it&#8217;s coincidence that makes these things happen,&#8221; Seixas said when this was pointed out to him \u2013 another sign of his maturity and perhaps his ability to deal with the pressure coming his way.<\/p>\n<p>Needing to win the final stage with a four-second gap in order to snatch the GC from Ayuso, he could not quite find the lift-off button that would have handed us that oh-so-convenient narrative breadcrumb, and sent the hype machine into overdrive.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, watching him at the Volta ao Algarve \u2013 brains and brawn, ability and application \u2013 it very much felt that, after a debut 2025 season flecked with promise, we were looking at someone who has truly arrived.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/teams-riders\/paul-seixas-may-not-be-the-new-tadej-pogacar-but-his-algarve-performance-proved-that-the-hype-is-very-much-real\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Twelve hundred metres from the summit of the Alto da Malh\u00e3o on Sunday, it looked as if the Paul Seixas hype train was about to reach hypersonic speeds.
