During that time, he&#8217;s had two operations and lost 10 kilos in weight.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<aside data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"hawk-root\"\/>\n<p id=\"e6bcfdc3-2fa7-4c50-9382-dc1499360414-2\">&#8220;I even thought I might never make it home,&#8221; Touz\u00e9 told<em> <\/em><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ouest-france.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.ouest-france.fr\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\"><em>Ouest-France <\/em><\/a> on Wednesday from his hospital bed in Menen, Belgium.<\/p>\n<aside data-component-name=\"Recirculation:ArticleRiver\" data-recirculation-type=\"inline\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Trending Bar\" data-nosnippet=\"\" class=\"clear-both pt-3 pb-4 mb-4 border-solid border-y border-neutral-300\">\n        <span class=\"font-article-heading block pb-3 !text-base font-bold uppercase sm:text-sm text-[#333]\"><br \/>\n            You may like<br \/>\n        <\/span><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>A pro since 2017 in French teams throughout his career, first with the low-level HP BTP-Auber &#8217;93 squad, and then as part of Cofidis, AG2R La Mondiale and then Cofidis again, Touz\u00e9 said he had no idea what the future holds for him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">As for the crash itself, it happened when his bike skidded on a cat&#8217;s-eye just as he was about to take a drink from a bidon. In a chain reaction, he let go of the handlebars, lost balance and hit the crash barriers, all at 60 kph.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#8220;Instantly, I managed to get up. But what was the most shocking thing of all was my leg, because my foot was twisted round next to my thigh,&#8221; he explained. &#8220;I told myself that wasn&#8217;t normal.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Presumably in a state of severe shock, the pain in his abdomen was &#8220;really bad&#8221;, he said. &#8220;But at first I didn&#8217;t realise how serious things were.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Once in hospital in Oman, &#8220;Initially they didn&#8217;t realize that I had a hole in my intestine, so that&#8217;s what made my condition worse,&#8221; Touz\u00e9 added.<\/p>\n<div id=\"slice-container-newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-YXxvc8j3omShgaGMKuE7Jb\" class=\"slice-container newsletter-inbodyContent-slice newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-YXxvc8j3omShgaGMKuE7Jb slice-container-newsletterForm\">\n<div data-hydrate=\"true\" class=\"newsletter-form__wrapper newsletter-form__wrapper--inbodyContent\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-form__container\">\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__top-bar\"\/>\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__main-section\">\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">The latest race content, interviews, features, reviews and expert buying guides, direct to your inbox!<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#8220;I was starting to suffer from peritonitis and had a high temperature. I went more than ten days without eating.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With his issues in his abdomen only partly resolved, the doctors in Belgium had to operate on the injury, with Touz\u00e9 explaining that after everything had been put back in place, he had a new wound that needed to heal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#8220;I am open from the sternum to the lower abdomen,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<aside data-component-name=\"Recirculation:ArticleRiver\" data-recirculation-type=\"inline\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Trending Bar\" data-nosnippet=\"\" class=\"clear-both pt-3 pb-4 mb-4 border-solid border-y border-neutral-300\">\n        <span class=\"font-article-heading block pb-3 !text-base font-bold uppercase sm:text-sm text-[#333]\"><br \/>\n            You may like<br \/>\n        <\/span><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Then there was his knee injury to handle as well. Touz\u00e9 is still waiting to see how multiple torn ligaments will be treated, but it&#8217;s estimated that it&#8217;ll take anything up to eight months for him to recover fully.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Due to be concentrating on the Spring Classics before his crash, now racing again at any point this season is out of the question and his career may even be over.<\/p>\n<p>Touz\u00e9 already had bad accidents in the 2020 Tour de Pologne and the 2022 Vuelta a Burgos. In Poland he was caught in the same mass crash where Fabio Jakobsen had a life-threatening fall, in<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/news\/injury-update-prades-touze-released-from-hospital-after-tour-de-pologne-crash\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/news\/injury-update-prades-touze-released-from-hospital-after-tour-de-pologne-crash\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/news\/injury-update-prades-touze-released-from-hospital-after-tour-de-pologne-crash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> the Frenchman&#8217;s case fracturing a finger in three places<\/a>. Then in Spain two years later, like several others, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/races\/vuelta-a-burgos-2022\/stage-2\/results\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/races\/vuelta-a-burgos-2022\/stage-2\/results\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/races\/vuelta-a-burgos-2022\/stage-2\/results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he lost control of his bike on a speed bump<\/a> organisers had failed to remove from the course and hurt his head badly.<\/p>\n<p>Out of contract at the end of the year, but receiving lots of support from friends and family, Touz\u00e9 said his future remained very unclear. But despite the uncertainty he was trying to stay philosophical.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After all this, frankly I didn&#8217;t think about the bike at all,&#8221; Touz\u00e9 told <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ouest-france.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.ouest-france.fr\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\"><em>Ouest-France<\/em> <\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#8220;A fracture is one thing, but when your internal organs are affected, you feel like things are moving on another level. These things take time to assimilate.
