{"id":230570,"date":"2026-02-26T23:18:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T23:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2026\/02\/26\/horror-as-mass-graves-found-near-2026-world-cup-stadium\/"},"modified":"2026-02-26T23:18:00","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T23:18:00","slug":"horror-as-mass-graves-found-near-2026-world-cup-stadium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2026\/02\/26\/horror-as-mass-graves-found-near-2026-world-cup-stadium\/","title":{"rendered":"Horror as mass graves found near 2026 World Cup stadium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Hundreds of bags of human remains were recently found in makeshift graves in the Mexican city at the heart of the startling wave of violence over the killing of a cartel boss \u2014 just months before key World Cup games are scheduled to be held there.<\/p>\n<p>Since last year, more than 20 grave sites have been found scattered around Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco state and home to the notorious Jalisco New Generation Cartel, which was led by Nemesio \u201cEl Mencho\u201d Oseguera Cervantes before he was killed by Mexican authorities on Monday, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/english.elpais.com\/international\/2025-12-20\/mexicos-missing-people-crisis-casts-a-shadow-over-world-cup-venue.html\" title=\"english.elpais.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">El Pais<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So far, more than 500 bags of remains have been found in just four of the 22 grave sites \u2014 some just miles from Akron Stadium, one of Mexico\u2019s three World Cup locations, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/26\/us-news\/mass-graves-found-scattered-around-mexican-soccer-stadium-hosting-world-cup-games\/\" title=\"nypost.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The New York Post reports<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The shocking discoveries \u2014 compounded with the recent outbreak of cartel violence that left some 70 people dead \u2014 has put fans, locals and teams on edge ahead of the international tournament being held there this year, beginning June 2. <\/p>\n<p>Some 130,000 people have vanished in Mexico \u2014 a 200 per cent surge in the last decade \u2014 with a majority believed to be tied to cartel violence.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"sc-11i7hbm-0 eUyOEq\"><amp-img alt=\"Aerial view of Akron Stadium, a 2026 FIFA World Cup venue in Guadalajara. Photo by ULISES RUIZ \/ AFP.<\/span><span>Source: AFP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIn Jalisco, the missing are made to vanish,\u201d Jaime Aguilar of the Guerreros Buscadores de Jalisco, an organisation of volunteers who search for the missing, told El Pais in December.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is so it won\u2019t be known; they want to erase all traces of the disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Between February and September 2025, 270 bags filled with human remains were found at Las Agujas, a 54-acre property located in Zapopan \u2014 a city next to Guadalajara \u2014 and one of the largest mass graves found, according to El Pais.<\/p>\n<p>Since that grim discovery by construction workers, more bodies have been found in the area, including 48 bags of remains unearthed in a clandestine grave in Zapopan in October, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/human-remains-grave-jalisco-mexico-cartel-stronghold\/\" title=\"www.cbsnews.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">CBS News <\/a>reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the findings are gaining attention, because they\u2019re being linked to the World Cup. It\u2019s several miles away, but this is happening near a World Cup stadium,\u201d the Guerreros Buscadores said. <\/p>\n<p>Jalisco has been plagued by some of the starkest examples of cartel violence in recent years, including the discovery of a cartel killing site at a death camp known as Izaguirre Ranch last March.<\/p>\n<p>Chaos erupted this week in 20 of Mexico\u2019s 32 states after the Mexican military took out drug lord Oseguera. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"sc-11i7hbm-0 eUyOEq\"><amp-img alt=\"Aerial view of the site where the clandestine grave known a Las Agujasa was located, containing 227 bags with human remains in Jalisco. At least 70 people were killed, including 25 military members, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Even Mexicans in Guadalajara are sceptical about hosting the World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think they should host the World Cup here,\u201d Hugo Per\u00e9z, who owns a restaurant near the stadium, told the Associated Press. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have so many problems, and they want to invest in the World Cup? Photo by Ulises RUIZ \/ AFP.<\/span><span>Source: AFP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The football federation for Portugal, whose national team is scheduled to play Mexico in a friendly match at the end of March in Mexico City, said it was \u201cclosely monitoring the delicate situation\u201d in Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>The Mexican government, meanwhile, has promised that the international event \u2014 hosted jointly by Mexico, the United States and Canada \u2014 will not be affected.<\/p>\n<p>President Claudia Sheinbaum promised reporters this week she had \u201cevery guarantee\u201d that there was \u201cno risk\u201d for fans coming to the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>Jalisco Gov. Jesus Pablo Lemus said he had spoken with local FIFA officials, who have \u201cabsolutely no intention of removing any venues from Mexico.
