<\/p>\n<\/template><\/p>\nWarlocks can summon temporary and permanent demons, or even just absorb them into yourself for terrifying effects (Image via Blizzard Entertainment)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nMany times, they summon demons from Hell to fight for them, but they can also conjure parts of Demons<\/strong>, like a gigantic arm from the nether, that swings and attacks foes. While the class looks powerful, a lot of that power seems to come from just how you position your demons, and how long they can stay in battle. Using them in the right places can deal incredible damage, keep you safe, and lock down foes.<\/p>\nMost classes have very specific rotations they use. Warlocks in Diablo 4 will be able to be flexible, using whatever they have at the moment, in a variety of incredible ways. There\u2019s more to Warlocks than summoning demons and fire, though. There\u2019s also the Soul Shard system<\/strong>.<\/p>\nSoul Shards<\/strong> allow the Warlock to literally fuse a demon into their own body, and each of the four shard types you can pick from has its own gameplay style. While we know all four types (Legion, Vanguard, Ritualist, Mastermind), we only saw the specific power of one, the Legion:<\/p>\n\u201cCasting a Greater Demon Skill increases Lesser Demon Skill Cast Speed by 25% and Cooldown Rate by 20% for 10 seconds. When 50 of your Lesser Demons die, your next Greater Demon Skill Cast has no Resource Cost. Grants the Summon Ae\u2019grom skill.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Each of these Soul Shards fundamentally changes how you approach the game, so it sounds even more transformative than the new class mechanic for Paladins. The Soul Shards also each have their own specific demon that you will fuse to you. In addition to the main shard, you also have Spawn Fragments<\/strong>, which serve as further specialization.<\/p>\nWhat are the primary gameplay archetypes of the Warlock in Diablo 4?<\/h2>\n Depending on which Soul Shard you find yourself using, you\u2019re likely going to have drastically different gameplay styles, which is a great thing in Diablo 4, for the Warlock. The developer stream gave us a taste of what each of the archetypes will be like<\/p>\nEach of the Soul Shard archetypes gives plenty of amazing ways to control the battlefield (Image via Blizzard Entertainment)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\nLegion<\/strong>: Summon swarms of temporary, but physical demons to the world of Sanctuary. This is a build that controls the battlefield with lots of aggressive demons in play, using them in creative ways. It uses the demon Ae\u2019grom<\/strong>, which has the Spit<\/strong> command, that, when the projectiles land, burst into smaller demons. Your smaller demons are fuel to summon even greater demons. The weak are food for the strong, creating an endless loop of demonic torment.<\/li>\nVanguard<\/strong>: This is a tankier, more mobile, frontline Warlock. It binds the fiery demonic steed Obodion<\/strong> to help you close the gap between enemy packs, keeping the battle going longer. It uses the Charge<\/strong> ability to sprint across the battlefield, dragging enemies with it, and blasting hellfire across the ground. If you want to speed clear, this looks like the build for it.<\/li>\nMastermind<\/strong>: This is for the control players. Through the Shadow Demon Lalash<\/strong> attacks when you command it to. It has the power of Terror Run<\/strong> consumes foes, while also surrounding the Warlock in shadows. This keeps you safe, while setting up ambushes on the packs of enemies in D4. It\u2019s for the Warlock player that wants to think in 4D chess.<\/li>\nRitualist<\/strong>: Ritualist Warlocks are all about burst damage. They use their demon, Valach<\/strong>, as a sacrificial pawn to spike their damage at critical moments. Draining the essence of your demon empowers your spells in a variety of ways, like making Dark Prison stronger, and blasting the trapped demons with Hell Fractures<\/strong>. Valach empowers primarily your Occult, Hellfire, and Abyss abilities, making these skills far deadlier than your average Warlock.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nUnfortunately, I\u2019ve only seen one of the demon names written down, so I had to use my best guess for the others. As I find official names, I\u2019ll update this accordingly. Picking the right demon for your build is incredibly important, and each one frankly, sounds awesome. If I had to pick a favorite, it\u2019s probably Legion or Mastermind, right now, as it pertains to the Diablo 4 Warlock archetypes.<\/p>\n
Examples of skills used by the Warlock in Diablo 4<\/h2>\n During this stream, the Diablo 4 developers gave us several examples of some of the specific powers you can use as a Warlock:<\/p>\nClever use of Warlock skills can completely halt enemy aggression (Image via Blizzard Entertainment)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\nSummon Fallen<\/strong>: Aggressive little creatures that run ahead and explode.<\/li>\nWall of Agony<\/strong>: Summon a barricade of demons to prevent anyone from passing beyond it, which also attacks enemies.<\/li>\nSummon Tortured Wretch<\/strong>: A bound demon erupts from the ground and screams, taunting nearby foes.<\/li>\nSummon Profane Sentinel<\/strong>: Conjures a demon that blasts lines of hellish energy in a line.<\/li>\nDark Prison<\/strong>: Lock down your foes in shadowy chains they cannot escape from.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nIt\u2019s more than just using one skill after another, though in Diablo 4. Warlocks look to be able to set up incredibly powerful combos, with a bit of effort and planning. You can conjure demons, and say, sacrifice them to empower the next spell.<\/p>\n
One combo example was to use Bombardment<\/strong> to destroy both your own demons and opponents, which enhances your Sigil of Summons<\/strong> to make the next demons you conjure more powerful than they would have been otherwise. This looks like a class that\u2019s going to be very exciting, and reward players for thinking outside the box.<\/p>\nThe majority of demons they summon look to be temporary, with the Warlock throwing them away when they have no further use. However, with the Soul Shards<\/strong> we mentioned earlier, there is at least one demon that you bind to you, to stick around to enhance your current gameplay style.<\/p>\nWe also got to see some variants on a handful of the skills Warlocks can use. Each variant on a skill\/summon fundamentally changes how it functions, giving a wealth of flexibility to Diablo 4\u2019s latest class. Here\u2019s a pair of examples of a really cool one, Sigil of Summons<\/strong>:<\/p>\nThese aren’t your average WoW succubi! (Image via Blizzard Entertainment)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\nSigil of Summons<\/strong>: Summon a wave of demons to fight for you.<\/li>\nSigil of Summons<\/strong>: Succubus: Summons a pair of Succubi that do incredible Shadow Damage.<\/li>\nSigil of Summons<\/strong>: Summon Hellwyrm: Summons a Hellwyrm from the Helltide that mimics your own casting, summon even greater numbers of demons to fight for you.<\/li>\nFiend of Abaddon<\/strong>: Summons a titanic demon from Hell that swings a greatsword in huge, unstoppable arcs for a limited time.<\/li>\nFiend of Abaddon<\/strong>: Abyssal Colossus: Now it deals a giant swing that pulls enemies in, making them easier to trap and kill.<\/li>\nFiend of Abaddon<\/strong>: Vanguard of Flames: Now, the giant fiery demon is bound directly to you, and moves when you do.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nI cannot stress how excited I am for Warlock in Diablo 4. It\u2019s fascinating to see just how similar, and also wildly different, the power level\/gameplay is from the Diablo 2 Warlock, to what it can do in D4.
