The defending champion and two-time winner was only the 20th rider to cross the line but, despite her own hopes going up in flames, there was a happy ending as she saw her teammate preparing to lift the trophy.<\/p>\n<p>Six minutes earlier, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/womens-cycling\/strade-bianche-women-elise-chabbey-lands-surprise-victory-in-electric-conclusion-to-a-thriller-in-tuscany\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/womens-cycling\/strade-bianche-women-elise-chabbey-lands-surprise-victory-in-electric-conclusion-to-a-thriller-in-tuscany\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/womens-cycling\/strade-bianche-women-elise-chabbey-lands-surprise-victory-in-electric-conclusion-to-a-thriller-in-tuscany\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elise Chabbey had crossed the line<\/a> with a look of complete shock on her face, landing the biggest win of her career after a complete thriller of a finale and a race as a whole.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<aside data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"hawk-root\"\/>\n<p id=\"586fadfa-8a4e-4fa3-b256-6d65528a191b-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Elisa Longo Borghini (UAE Team ADQ) and Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney (Canyon-SRAM zondacrypto) had looked to be slugging it out on the final ramps of the Via Santa Caterina, but the Swiss rider expertly nipped around them on the narrow twisting streets that led to the drop down into the Piazza del Campo.<\/p>\n<aside data-component-name=\"Recirculation:ArticleRiver\" data-recirculation-type=\"inline\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Trending Bar\" data-nosnippet=\"\" class=\"clear-both pb-0 pt-2 mb-4\">\n        <span class=\"&#10;            flex&#10;            after:content-[''] after:flex-1 after:ml-4 after:my-[0.7rem] after:border-t after:border-solid after:border-t-[#ccc]&#10;            before:content-[''] before:flex-1 before:mr-4 before:my-[0.7rem] before:border-t before:border-solid before:border-t-[#ccc]&#10;            font-article-heading pb-0 !text-base uppercase sm:text-sm font-bold&#10;        \"><br \/>\n            You may like<br \/>\n        <\/span><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>What\u2019s more, there were two FDJ riders on the podium, with Franziska Koch getting around Longo Borghini to claim third place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so proud of them. We did such a perfect race, really like perfect perfect,\u201d Vollering said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The race may have started and ended perfectly for FDJ but there was a big bit in the middle where it threatened to go drastically awry. Just as the race was hotting up on the first passage of the Le Tolfe uphill gravel sector, Vollering suffered a puncture. She settled into what looked like a strong chase group but an even bigger nightmare was around the corner when they took a wrong turn with 33km left to race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had flat tyre in worst moment ever, but I was like \u2018OK I can still come back, never give up, keep pushing\u2019. But then they sent us the wrong way, and actually that moment you saw all the riders were like \u2018OK, we\u2019ll never come back\u2019 because all the cars went past, and we were the last in the race, I think. Then it was over. I was like \u2018come on girls, don\u2019t give up\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes I tried to tell them something but I think they didn\u2019t understand me.
