There’s an exciting feel to this Glasgow Rangers<\/a> side again, with there a sense that Danny Rohl<\/a> is fashioning a youthful core who can be built around over the coming years at Ibrox.<\/p>\n

Defensively, Tuur Rommens and Emmanuel Fernandez have settled in smoothly in Glasgow, as too has Tochi Chukwuani, while there have also been reasons for encouragement regarding the young strike pairing of Ryan Naderi and Youssef Chermiti.<\/p>\n

That being said, with players of potential comes inconsistency, with Naderi still yet to get off the mark in the Premiership<\/a>, while Chermiti ranks second in the division with regard to big chances missed (13).<\/p>\n

With the pair still just 22 and 21, respectively, it would be wrong to expect them to be the finished article, although that’s not to say that the Gers can’t still seek out something of an upgrade this summer.<\/p>\n

\n Latest on Rangers’ search for a striker<\/strong>

It’s not necessarily the best reflection on the Gers’ recruitment ream that a new centre-forward still appears something of a priority, even after signing Naderi, Chermiti and Bojan Miovski within the past year.<\/p>\n

That trio have scored just 13 Premiership goals between them, fewer than the leading scorer in the division, Tawanda Maswanhise (16), with James Tavernier still the Glasgow side’s top scorer in all competitions.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, there is a sense that Rohl and co could look to move again for a long-term target at Ibrox, with reports last week highlighting that the Light Blues have revived their interest in Sheffield United star, Tyrese Campbell<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As the Daily Record noted<\/a>, there was the suggestion that talks over a move had been held back in January, with both Rangers and Celtic making enquiries, having previously pursued a deal for the then-Stoke City man back in 2020.<\/p>\n

Campbell had been nearing the end of his contract back then, while his future is again in doubt in the present day, with the 26-year-old having a real decision to make with just over 12 months to run on his existing deal.<\/p>\n

That contract status should ensure that the Englishman is available for something of a knock-down price, with a fee of around \u00a35m<\/a> mooted.<\/p>\n

\n Why Campbell could be perfect signing for Rangers<\/strong>

Over half a decade has passed since then, although speaking on Rangers’ interest in Campbell back in 2020, ex-Ibrox hero Kris Boyd<\/a> likened that potential deal to Celtic’s prior signing of Moussa Dembele from England’s EFL four years earlier.<\/p>\n

In Dembele’s case, his expiring contract ensured the Parkhead side could secure a deal for a fee of just \u00a3500k, with the Frenchman going on to sparkle in Scottish Football, scoring 51 goals in just 94 games in all competitions.<\/p>\n

That record included seven goals in just nine meetings with Rangers, having been something of a benchmark when it comes to Celtic striker signings since then.<\/p>\n

Those of a Gers persuasion may not be too concerned with the goings on elsewhere in Glasgow, but it’s fair to say that they could well do with a Dembele-style figure to instantly hit the ground running at Ibrox.<\/p>\n

In Campbell, now far more experienced than he was six years ago, Rohl could find just that, with the former England youth international boasting a solid, albeit unspectacular record south of the border.<\/p>\n

He has only scored 17 times in 73 games in Sheffield, although that included 11 goals in the Championship last season, despite starting only 22 league and playoff games.<\/p>\n

A man who also previously hit 36 goals in 164 games at Stoke, alongside five in 15 on loan at Shrewsbury Town, Campbell isn’t prolific, but he sure is a handful, while boasting the benefit to Rohl of typically operating as part of a front two at Bramall Lane.<\/p>\n

The \u00a35m man has only scored six times this term, albeit while missing just five ‘big chances’, having been particularly clinical last term with a goal conversion rate of 21%.<\/p>\n

Much like Dembele, he’s a mobile forward who can occupy a backline with his speed and athleticism, with such traits having been highlighted by ex-Sheffield United striker, Brian Deane<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Recent signings from the EFL haven’t always gone to plan for the Gers, yet hopefully Campbell could prove less Joe Rothwell and more Fernandez.<\/p>\n
