However, in 2025, those very attackers dreaded seeing the Seattle Reign on their schedule, and that was due in large part to who they have in goal.

Claudia Dickey is emerging as one of the top goalkeepers in the nation, and has only shown improvement year-to-year. The 25-year-old is both racking up accolades in the NWSL and appearances with the USWNT, and could very well be the goalkeeper of the future for both Seattle and the U.S.

North Carolina’s Finest

Claudia Dickey was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina. She attended Charlotte Latin School, where she would quickly rise as one of the brightest goalkeeping talents in the country.

In three seasons of high school soccer, Dickey racked up about as many accolades as one could imagine. This included All-America and All-State honors in both her junior and senior seasons, as well as winning North Carolina Soccer Coaches Player of the Year in 2017.

Even more impressively, she played both goalkeeper and midfield at different times during her high school career, showing Dickey’s well-rounded skill set as a player. In the end though, it was her goalkeeping that put her on the map. She ended high school with 260 saves across 61 games at Charlotte Latin, as well as a handful of goals from her stint playing in the midfield.

Unbelievably, Dickey was a dominant force on the basketball court as well. Her immense success in high school athletics earned her an athletic scholarship to the University of North Carolina, where she would play both soccer and basketball.

Staying in the Tar Heel State

After a remarkable high school career, Dickey earned the right to go play her college with the Tar Heels themselves from 2018-2021, cementing herself as one of the next great goalkeepers in the nation.

It took until midway through her sophomore season to wrangle the starting goalkeeper job. However, while in goal, she made an immediate positive impact on the team, allowing just six goals and leading UNC to a 16-1-2 record while in goal.

The rest of her collegiate career would be more of the same. When it was all set and done, Dickey finished her time at Chapel Hill with 55 starts across 81 total appearances, and 149 total saves. She would earn one First-team All-ACC honor in 2019, and two ACC Tournament All-Tournament honors in both 2019 and 2020.

Like she did in high school, Dickey put together tremendous success on the pitch while also playing basketball with UNC. Eventually though, it became very clear Dickey was bound for professional soccer, and she would solely commit herself to soccer.

Headed out West in the NWSL

Claudia Dickey would pack her bags for the state of Washington in 2022, getting selected by Seattle Reign FC 20th overall in the 2022 NWSL Draft. Similarly to college, Dickey started her career as a backup, only to eventually play herself onto the field and become a star for her squad.

After spending the 2022 season off the field, Dickey saw her first playing time in 2023. It was during the 2023 NWSL Challenge Cup that she first impressed, and found herself in a starting role the rest of the way. In six regular season starts, she posted three clean sheets, and then posted another two clean sheets in the NWSL Playoffs.

2024 would be her first full season as Seattle’s keeper, but 2025 was when Dickey cemented herself as one of the brightest goalkeeping talents in the world. For starters, she was an ironwoman in 2025, playing every single minute of every single game. On top of that, Dickey recorded 88 saves, leading the NWSL and breaking Hope Solo’s franchise record from 2013.

This remarkable 2025 campaign earned her a spot on the NWSL Best XI Second Team and made her a finalist for NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year.
