Rivalries are a big part of any sport, and women\u2019s soccer is no exception. There are tons of big rivalries around the world at the U.S. college level, the club level, and the international stage. From the U.S. to Europe to Central America, we\u2019ll look at some of the most heated rivalries throughout the sport at the club level.<\/p>\n

Embed from Getty Images<\/a><\/p>\n When you think of rivalry in the NWSL, the first teams that come to mind are the Thorns and OL Reign, otherwise known as the Cascadia Rivalry. This rivalry was born in the MLS with the Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers, but it carried over to the teams in the NWSL, and it\u2019s a battle every time the two clubs meet.<\/p>\n It\u2019s the oldest rivalry in the league, and it brings an exciting matchup between two clubs that don\u2019t like each other. Last season the two clubs met four times, twice in the regular season and twice in the Challenge Cup. Three of those four meetings ended in ties, but OL Reign picked up a win in one of the matches.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Embed from Getty Images<\/a><\/p>\n One of the biggest rivalries in England is the North West London Derby. This is another rivalry that began early on in the men\u2019s game. It\u2019s an intense rivalry that\u2019s brought a lot of terrific games, especially in recent years. Chelsea and Arsenal have been the leaders of the pack in the WSL, so many of the recent matchups have come with trophy implications.<\/p>\n It\u2019s a fairly even matchup, with Chelsea at 12-1-2 and Arsenal at 11-2-2 in the series. Their most recent matchup in the regular season was a 1-1 draw on Jan 15, 2023. However, Chelsea beat Arsenal 2-0 at the end of February to knock them out of the FA Cup.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Embed from Getty Images<\/a><\/p>\n These two clubs are heavyweights regarding women\u2019s soccer in France. Lyon<\/a> has been the powerhouse club for so long, but PSG has made this a competitive matchup, especially in recent years.<\/p>\n The rivalry grew even bigger in 2021 when PSG won the Division 1 Feminine for the first time and snapped Lyon\u2019s 14-year title-winning streak in the process. In the same season, they also eliminated Lyon from the Champions League competition.<\/p>\n However, Lyon got their revenge, knocking PSG out of the Champions League in 2022.<\/p>\n The most recent meeting between the two clubs was on December 11, 2022, with PSG walking away with a 1-0 victory.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Embed from Getty Images<\/a><\/p>\n The rivalry between these two clubs is legendary in both women\u2019s and men\u2019s soccer in Mexico. Both teams have a strong history in Mexican soccer. They are based in different regions of the country, Club Am\u00e9rica out of Mexico City and Chivas out of; you guessed it, Guadalajara.<\/p>\n Matches between the two teams are always intense and closely contested. Currently, the teams are neck-a-neck in the Liga MX Femenil standings. Am\u00e9rica is third, and Chivas is second, with a difference of only three points.<\/p>\n The last four times these two teams met, Club Am\u00e9rica has won twice, and there have been two draws. In the semifinals of the Apertura last year, Am\u00e9rica ended up beating out Chivas due to a higher aggregate score. However, Guadalajara was atop the Apertura standings and is currently ahead in the Clausura standings. Chivas will definitely be looking to prove they\u2019re on top by the end of this season.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Embed from Getty Images<\/a><\/p>\n This is a natural rivalry in Australian women\u2019s soccer, featuring two of the biggest clubs in the country. Both teams are based in Melbourne, and their matches always draw a lot of attention from fans. Moreover, since the two teams share a city, they compete for the same pool of fans and players, leading to an even more heated rivalry.<\/p>\n Plus Melbourne Victory women\u2019s team was established in 2008, while the Melbourne City women\u2019s team came later in 2015, leading to even more dislike toward each other.
