The zoomies, however, will be across the road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2026\/mar\/26\/gout-gout-sprinter-new-phase\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australia\u2019s best athletes led by sprinter Gout Gout<\/a> will dash around the newly laid blue track at the Athletic Centre, while others fly over bars or into sand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The immediate goal is a national title and selection for this year\u2019s Commonwealth Games or World Junior Championships teams. But this meet arrives at a time when the sport is building towards Los Angeles 2028 and on towards Brisbane 2032, and a new crop of athletes is out to prove their era has arrived.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"history-beckons-for-hull\" class=\"dcr-n4qeq9\">History beckons for Hull<\/h2>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Jessica Hull, an Olympic 1500m medallist, raised eyebrows when she also raced the 800m at the World Championships in Japan last year. The idea started as what she thought was an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2026\/feb\/08\/australia-runner-jess-hull-olympic-dream-dad-coach\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">off-season joke with her coach and father Simon<\/a>, but a week later it became a plan. \u201cI asked Dad if he was serious, and he was like, \u2018Yeah, if you want to do it, let\u2019s try it, it\u2019s the year to do those kinds of things\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Hull holds the national records in the two shorter distances, and is the defending champion at both 1500m and 5000m. The 5000m will be run around half an hour after the 800m final on Sunday. No Australian woman has won national titles in all three events at the same meet. Indeed, none has won all three events over their entire careers. Hull needs only the 800m to complete the first set.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Women\u2019s 1500m final, Friday 8.19pm (all times AEST)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Women\u2019s 800m final, Sunday 12.55pm<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Women\u2019s 5000m final, Sunday 13.28pm<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"bol-stares-down-challengers\" class=\"dcr-n4qeq9\">Bol stares down challengers<\/h2>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Defending 800m national champion Peter Bol surged back to top form in 2025 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2025\/jul\/12\/gout-gout-wins-again-in-monaco-as-jess-hull-and-peter-bol-break-national-records\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set a new Australian record<\/a>, even if he failed to meet his own expectations at the World Championships in Japan where he was eliminated in the heats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">At 32 and with four national titles, Bol is one of the veterans of Australian athletics, but a talented crop of younger athletes are out for his crown. Luke Boyes \u2013 the 22-year-old who scorched the field at the Maurie Plant Meet \u2013 leads a group of challengers that includes Peyton Craig, Daniel Williams and Bob Abdelrahim, Bol\u2019s training partner in Melbourne under Justin Rinaldi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt\u2019s probably the pinnacle of athletics in Australia, trying to crown yourself a national champion,\u201d Bol said on Wednesday. \u201cThis weekend is not really about times, it\u2019s more about victory.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"myers-chases-national-record\" class=\"dcr-n4qeq9\">Myers chases national record<\/h2>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Alongside Hollingsworth, Cam Myers is the other young middle distance phenomenon in Australian athletics. He still needs to be tested at elite meets with multiple rounds, given his failure to progress past the semi-finals at last year\u2019s World Championships. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2026\/mar\/28\/lachie-kennedy-upstages-gout-gout-to-win-200m-at-peter-norman-memorial\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Defeats to Lachlan Kennedy at the past two Maurie Plant Meets<\/a> came after the sort of slow starts Gout that has said he is addressing with more time in the gym. Weaker-than-expected times at the Queensland state championships last month were explained by complaints of a cold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But there is enough evidence to suggest Gout\u2019s promise is legitimate. He appears untroubled by travelling, having set his 200m personal best last year in his first senior overseas race. He will race only the senior 200m here before the junior nationals next week in Brisbane, and is passing up Commonwealth Games glory to race the world\u2019s best under-20s at the world juniors in August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Last year\u2019s 200m nationals final \u2013 when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2025\/apr\/13\/gout-gout-lachie-kennedy-200m-australian-athletics-championships\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kennedy false started and was disqualified<\/a> \u2013 is ignored by most keeping score in the burgeoning rivalry for the title of Australia\u2019s sprint king \u2013 like Bol, who has become a mentor to Gout. \u201cLet\u2019s make it the best of five,\u201d he said on Wednesday at the event\u2019s media launch.
