Nestled into the eight-man move that formed on the Pont Gibus sector and turned out to be the precursor to the winning move, Pithie was floating over the cobbles. The Paris-Roubaix podium was creeping into focus on the horizon.<\/p>\n<p>Until it wasn\u2019t. A puncture with 78km to go led to a scrappy bike change, and while he was able to work his way back with teammate Jordi Meeus and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/racing\/paris-roubaix-men-wout-van-aert-edges-out-tadej-pogacar-to-claim-his-first-cobbled-monument-victory-in-thrilling-finale-after-both-riders-deal-with-punctures-and-bike-changes\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/racing\/paris-roubaix-men-wout-van-aert-edges-out-tadej-pogacar-to-claim-his-first-cobbled-monument-victory-in-thrilling-finale-after-both-riders-deal-with-punctures-and-bike-changes\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/racing\/paris-roubaix-men-wout-van-aert-edges-out-tadej-pogacar-to-claim-his-first-cobbled-monument-victory-in-thrilling-finale-after-both-riders-deal-with-punctures-and-bike-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the eventual winner Wout Van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike)<\/a>, worse was yet to come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s where it all started going downhill,\u201d he said. \u201cContact lens fell out, crashed on Mons-en-Pevele, crashed again\u2026 it was a bit of a mess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The contact lens was lost to the pav\u00e9 with just over 50km to go on sector 12, and it led to his race being lost on the next sector, Mons-en-Pevele, where he crashed hard through a left-hander on the back of the group that was by this point being led by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/mathieu-van-der-poel-punctures-twice-on-arenberg-walks-against-traffic-to-collect-spare-from-teammate\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/mathieu-van-der-poel-punctures-twice-on-arenberg-walks-against-traffic-to-collect-spare-from-teammate\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/mathieu-van-der-poel-punctures-twice-on-arenberg-walks-against-traffic-to-collect-spare-from-teammate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">comeback king Mathieu van der Poel<\/a>, chasing the tearaway Van Aert and Poga\u010dar.<\/p>\n<div id=\"slice-container-newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-eztjsZMqvBYb6umLQmomGE\" class=\"slice-container newsletter-inbodyContent-slice newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-eztjsZMqvBYb6umLQmomGE slice-container-newsletterForm\">\n<div data-hydrate=\"true\" class=\"newsletter-form__wrapper newsletter-form__wrapper--inbodyContent\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-form__container\">\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__top-bar\"\/>\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__main-section\">\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">The latest race content, interviews, features, reviews and expert buying guides, direct to your inbox!<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cSometimes with the wind, when you look back, it just flies out,\u201d Pithie said of the contact lens issue. \u201cIt&#8217;s only happened once before, but I mean, it&#8217;s just annoying because one side of the vision is clear and the other side is blurry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, yeah, obviously I wasn&#8217;t taking the best lines. It would have played a part [in the crash].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still felt pretty good at that point. I was just on the back of that group, hoping Van der Poel would do the work to bring us back. I mean, the spectator was pretty close. We were going super fast, and yeah, I just ploughed straight into them. They were a little bit too close on the corner, over the road,&#8221; he explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re going so fast, it happens. I hope they&#8217;re okay, to be honest, because they didn&#8217;t sound too good on the ground while I was trying to get up and go again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pithie\u2019s hopes of a top result had well and truly faded, though his race wasn\u2019t over, and he rolled into the Roubaix velodrome and walked away with 26th place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s disappointing, but it is what it is, it&#8217;s bike racing. This is such a crazy race. So much stuff happens. You need to have a bit of luck,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll be back next year. I still love this race.
