The announcement sent shock through the soccer world as the rule will allow teams to spend up to $1 million, in 2026, outside the salary cap on certain players. This amount will increase with the salary cap each season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The HIP rule will go into effect starting on July 1, 2026. However, teams can sign \u201cHigh Impact Players\u201d immediately because \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the contract terms do not require the team to utilize the rule until the effective date.\u201d All HIP contracts taking advantage of this rule must have a cap charge that is worth a minimum of 12% of the base salary cap.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwslsoccer.com\/news\/nwsl-introduces-high-impact-player-rule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NWSL<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a player has to meet <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of the following commercial or sporting criteria, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to be considered a \u201cHigh Impact Player.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Player is on SportsPro Media Top 150 Most Marketable Athletes within the one (1) year prior to the current league season; or,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Player is selected in the Top 30 in Ballon d\u2019Or voting in the two (2) years prior to the current league season; or<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Player is selected in the Top 40 of the Guardian Top 100 football players in the world in the two (2) years prior; or<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Player is selected in the Top 40 of ESPN FC Top 50 football players in the world in the two (2) years prior; or<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Top 11 minutes played for the USWNT in the prior two (2) calendar years for field players for all competition types; or<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Top one (1) minutes played for USWNT in the prior two (2) calendar years for goalkeepers for all competition types; or<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Player selected as NWSL MVP Finalist within previous the two (2) league seasons; or<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Player selected to the End of Year NWSL Best XI First Team within the previous two (2) league seasons.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The league will continue to update the commercial and sporting qualifications to make sure that they align with the state of global soccer, remain objective, and reward on-field performance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first player to reap the benefits of the new rule was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonspirit.com\/team-member\/trinity-rodman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trinity Rodman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a forward for the Washington Spirit. Earlier this year, Rodman <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/girlssoccernetwork.com\/footypop-trinity-rodman-is-staying-with-the-washington-spirit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signed a deal to return to the Spirit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that is worth over $2 million per year. This deal makes her the highest paid womens player in the world. The rule is also often referred to as the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/story\/_\/id\/47399385\/nwsl-implements-new-rodman-rule-star-players\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rodman rule<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as it was created with hopes of keeping her in the NWSL.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" style=\"background: #FFF; border: 0; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: 0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width: 540px; min-width: 326px; padding: 0; width: calc(100% - 2px);\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DT1NfzUEru4\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\"\/>\n<p>Before signing her record-breaking deal, Rodman was <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/articles\/trinity-rodman-explains-why-she-215506758.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">considering<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> signing with a team overseas. Many other notable NWSL players have made the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/story\/_\/id\/46761788\/uswnt-players-transfers-nwsl-europe-wsl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to playing professionally in Europe, as contracts have become more lucrative internationally. The league is hoping to use this rule as a way to keep high-level talent in the NWSL.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEnsuring our teams can compete for the best players in the world is critical to the continued growth of our league,\u201d said NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwslsoccer.com\/news\/nwsl-introduces-high-impact-player-rule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">press release about the HIP rule<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the increase in NWSL player salaries, the NWSL Players Association (NWSLPA) stands <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/frontofficesports.com\/nwsl-union-files-grievance-over-leagues-rodman-rule-for-star-players\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">firmly against the implementation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the HIP rule. The Players Association believes that the added salary should be available to all players and the rule violates the recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/girlssoccernetwork.com\/what-fans-should-know-about-the-nwsls-current-cba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">collective bargaining agreement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In January, the NWSLPA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/frontofficesports.com\/nwsl-union-files-grievance-over-leagues-rodman-rule-for-star-players\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">filed a grievance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the HIP rule and countered with a proposal of their own.
