Manchester United<\/a> are now in the race to sign Ao Tanaka from Leeds United this summer, with Michael Carrick impressed by the midfielder’s performance at Old Trafford.<\/p>\n

Man United got the chance to witness Tanaka’s quality first-hand last Monday, as Leeds secured their first victory and Old Trafford in 45 years and the midfielder more than played his part.<\/p>\n

It was also likely the reminder that the Whites needed about his quality just a week after he scored a crucial goal in their FA Cup semi-final against West Ham United.<\/p>\n

Their realisation that this is a player capable of performing every week in the Premier League may have come too little too late, however, with reports now claiming that Tanaka will push to leave<\/a> the club.<\/p>\n

A new contract at Elland Road has not been ruled out quite yet, but it remains to be seen whether Tanaka will be willing to accept his current game time for another season.<\/p>\n

Daniel Farke<\/a> will certainly hope that’s the case, telling reporters recently: “This is his first season on the highest level, and it has taken time to adapt to this level and provide consistency.<\/em><\/p>\n

“There was lots of criticism at times, but if he puts in performances like on Monday, then it will be good. Ao is a very important player for us.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Alas, the ball seems to be in the midfielder’s court and he could yet complete the ultimate betrayal by leaving Elland Road for Man United this summer.<\/p>\n

According to TeamTalk, Man United are now on red alert in the race to sign Tanaka<\/a> in what would be one of the most surprising moves of the summer given the rivalry between the two clubs.<\/p>\n

Valued at \u00a315m, Carrick was reportedly impressed by the Japan international on Monday and would like to add him to his midfield ranks.<\/p>\n

Man United’s midfield problems are well documented. Adding reinforcements in that area is the clear priority for INEOS this summer, with names such as Sandro Tonali<\/a> and Elliot Anderson<\/a> emerging as their top targets on that front.<\/p>\n

Failing that, however, Tanaka could provide the Red Devils with an unexpected gem.<\/p>\n
