The pay-per-view featured a blend of singles, tag, and multi-person matches, some with championships on the line, involving several of the Tony Khan-led company’s top names, such as MJF, Kenny Omega, Jon Moxley, Will Ospreay, Andrade, Darby Allin, Thekla, Jamie Hayter, The Young Bucks, FTR, Adam Copeland, Christian Cage, Kazuchika Okada, Konosuke Takeshita, Tommaso Ciampa, Ricochet and Chris Jericho, to cite a few.

WWE, on the other hand, just wrapped up two nights of its biggest show of the year, WrestleMania 42, in the Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada, this weekend. Fans at the venue witnessed in action legends, established stars as well as up-and-comers like Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, Seth Rollins, Gunther, Liv Morgan, Stephanie Vaquer, Jade Cargill, Rhea Ripley, Penta, Finn Balor, Dominik Mysterio, Brock Lesnar, Oba Femi, CM Punk, Roman Reigns and many more, not to mention the fact that the PPV was hosted by none other than John Cena.

<template id="also-read-articles-template">

</template>

Regardless of its history and legacy, this year’s edition of The Showcase of the Immortals left much to be desired, according to fans, who have criticized the build leading up to the event, the pacing of the program overall, and various booking decisions, including how certain big-time matches concluded. Many have already argued that AEW Dynasty was a better show than WrestleMania, and Tony Khan now has the chance to make sure Double or Nothing 2026 next month blows The Show of Shows out of the water.

That said, let us speculate on three ways TK can achieve such a huge goal.

#1. AEW Double or Nothing could be a better-paced show than WrestleMania 42

A recurring point of criticism against WWE has been that the company consistently fails to strike a healthy balance between in-ring action, non-wrestling segments, and other media content such as vignettes and video packages. This remains an issue with the promotion’s PPV/PLEs as well, and was particularly noticeable at WrestleMania 42.

Night 1 of the event, for example, lasted for nearly five hours, but featured only around ninety minutes of wrestling- not to mention the fact that only two out of the seven matches on the Saturday-night card went on longer than 15 minutes. Night 2 supposedly ran for well over three hours, but, similarly to Night 1, it had less than 90 minutes of wrestling. Also, once again, only two of these six bouts went on for longer than fifteen minutes.

Admittedly, WWE as a promotion tends to market itself as a “sports entertainment” company. As such, it makes sense why the company does not always prioritize in-ring work and storytelling on its major shows. However, it also makes sense that fans tuning in to WrestleMania would want to watch more wrestling. This is precisely where AEW shines, with its consistent emphasis on whatever unfolds inside the squared circle.

AEW pay-per-views, conversely, often receive criticism for being too long and exhausting to watch– the reason in this case being the company booking almost every match on the card to go at least 15-20 minutes, if not longer. Having more time to wrestle allows All Elite Wrestling talent to properly craft compelling stories in the ring and showcase their abilities for viewers’ pleasure.

For AEW Double or Nothing next month, Tony Khan could try to practice some moderation in how long he books the matches to last, without trimming the card down significantly. The PPV might turn out to be a better-paced show than WrestleMania 42.

#2. AEW Double or Nothing could platform the women’s division better

Both WWE and AEW have been called out often for not adequately utilizing their respective women’s divisions. The Stamford-based company is held in high esteem for employing some of the best female wrestlers in the world and for featuring the locker room’s top talent on weekly television at least somewhat regularly.

However, this does not always translate into increased ring time, which many viewers still consider an extremely important metric in the business. Let us consider WrestleMania 42 as a test case. Night 1 of the event had three women’s matches, a fatal four-way Women’s Tag Team Title bout that ran for less than nine minutes, a Women’s Intercontinental Title bout between Becky Lynch and AJ Lee that also ran for just over eight minutes, and a Women’s World Title match between Liv Morgan and Stephanie Vaquer, which ran for less than seven.

Night 2 featured only one women’s match, a WWE Women’s Title bout between Rhea Ripley and Jade Cargill, which ended at just over ten minutes. Compare this to AEW Dynasty 2026, which had only one women’s match- Jamie Hayter challenging Thekla for the Women’s World Title- which went on for sixteen and a half minutes.

All Elite Wrestling has come under fire as of late for not giving its women’s division more screen time (and ring time). The company’s fanbase consistently expresses a desire to see the promotion’s female talent featured in its programming, and focusing more on the division will likely yield returns in viewership and ticket sales.

Using this tweet to make my point, but it’s 2026 and we are still at the 2020 discussion of WWE & AEW fans fighting over which women’s division is booked worse

En route to Double or Nothing 2026, AEW should therefore map out intriguing stories for its women’s division and top names, focusing especially on stars like Thekla, Willow Nightingale, Kris Statlander, Hikaru Shida, Mina Shirakawa, The Divine Dominion, and more. Tony Khan should build meaningful programs for the Women’s Title, the Women’s Tag Team Titles, and the TBS Title and resolve them at the pay-per-view.

The promotion could also explore the return of Mercedes Mone as a major angle heading into Double or Nothing. Booking the women’s division thoughtfully in this manner would likely leave fans with a better impression than the booking at WrestleMania 42 did.

#3. AEW Double or Nothing could do better with capping off long-term stories

WWE prides itself on being a promotion that stresses the narrative elements of the sport. However, lately, fans have been less than satisfied with the Triple H-led company’s execution of its various storylines. Viewers were befuddled by Jelly Roll and Pat McAfee being inserted into Cody Rhodes’ WrestleMania 42 feud with Randy Orton, for instance, as they expected WWE to draw from the two stars’ long shared history in the business.

Similarly, fans expected that tensions between CM Punk and Roman Reigns would continue escalating every week, especially after The Best in the World evoked and disrespected The OTC’s father during a promo exchange. However, the rivalry did not quite hit that next level of intensity, especially after Reigns’ subsequent comebacks against Punk merely teased the latter over his age. The Voice of The Voiceless even apologized to The Tribal Chief for his remark, instead of leaning into his verbal aggression, which long-time fans of Punk expected him to do.

“Sika was a great man. Sika was a great wrestler. Sika’s a champion. Sika’s a Hall of Famer. And I love and respect the old timers. And I hate the fact that invoked your father’s name in vain and I sincerely apologize to you.” – CM Punk to Roman Reigns #WWERAW

Due to these approaches, Rhodes’ victory over Orton and Reigns’ dethroning Punk arguably feel less cathartic as WrestleMania moments than they might have been otherwise. AEW, by contrast, has been faring better with its long-term stories, especially over the last several months. Let us consider MJF’s recent arc as an example. After barely retaining his Men’s World Title against Kenny Omega at Dynasty 2026, Friedman announced that he would celebrate his victory by taking a social media break.

Because of this, Big Hebrew was ignorant of the fact that Darby Allin, the new #1 contender for the AEW World Championship, wanted him in a title match on the following episode of Dynamite. An unprepared Friedman initially refused to defend the “Triple B” in Washington, but he was forced to do so in the main event, on pain of being stripped of his title if he did not. Characteristically, MJF tried to finish the matchup quickly by sneaking in a low-blow on Darby, but the latter unexpectedly returned the favor.

Following a series of big moves, Allin then pinned Friedman with a headlock takeover– a move The Wolf of Wrestling had used to defeat the daredevil multiple times before- to become the AEW World Champion finally. This entire saga involved years of narrative elements and was fittingly executed in Darby’s home state, in front of a raucous crowd.

From start to finish, this is one of my favorite angles AEW has ever done. A show-long deal to encapsulate an over 7-year journey. Max at his most cowardly and pathetic, Darby at his most heroic, and everyone from Renee to Bryan to Sting only add to the juice. Electrifying TV.

Double or Nothing 2026 will take place in New York, close to MJF’s hometown of Long Island. If Tony Khan books Friedman to reclaim his World Title at the PPV and resume his reign en route to All In: London, AEW will be concluding the next chapter of The Devil’s story in an appropriate and narratively coherent way. To take another instance, Konosuke Takeshita could finally beat Kazuchika Okada at the event and face the repercussions for his recent conflicts with the Don Callis Family. This storyline has been in the works for months now.

If TK manages to follow the same principle for the rest of the card and the roster, Double or Nothing might very likely surpass WrestleMania 42 in terms of overall quality.

<template id="post-rating-feedback-modal-template">

Why did you not like this content?

Cancel
Submit

</template>

Was this article helpful?

Thank You for feedback

Quick Links

More from Sportskeeda

Edited by Angana Roy

Source link

Just over a week ago, AEW presented the 2026 iteration of Dynasty in the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
