There feels like something brewing at Ibrox, with new Glasgow Rangers<\/a> boss Danny Rohl<\/a> assembling an exciting, youthful squad who could well end the season as Premiership<\/a> champions.<\/p>\n

After so much upheaval in the years since the last title triumph, and the subsequent surge to the Europa League final, there finally looks to be a sense of calm developing under the Rohl regime.<\/p>\n

Indeed, the hope will be that the German can continue to build a settled side for the long term, following a raft of outgoings and incomings in the space of just a few windows.<\/p>\n

Remarkably, of the side that reached that European showpiece in Seville in 2022, long-serving skipper James Tavernier is the only survivor from the matchday squad, with the likes of Calvin Bassey, Ryan Kent and Ryan Jack all departing soon after.<\/p>\n

In the case of Jack, the Scotland international had represented an astute pick-up from within the Premiership, something the Gers may look to replicate this summer.<\/p>\n

The run-in remains the priority, although work is already underway behind the scenes regarding potential new signings at Ibrox, with the rumour mill already beginning to heat up.<\/p>\n

Among those being targeted is Leeds United’s Joe Gelhardt, with a fee of around \u00a35m<\/a> having been suggested for a player who has just a year left on his deal at Elland Road.<\/p>\n

The Englishman is out on loan at Hull City, while back at Leeds, fellow forward Joel Piroe<\/a> has also been tipped for a move to Glasgow, amid the 49ers link between the two clubs.<\/p>\n

As already stated too, there are those within Scotland’s top tier who the Light Blues officials are looking at, with reports last month<\/a> suggesting that both Rangers and Celtic are ready to sign Kilmarnock starlet, David Watson.<\/p>\n

Whoever manages to secure Champions League qualification could have the edge in what was described as an “open race”, albeit with the Glasgow pair set to face rival interest from clubs in Italy.<\/p>\n

The key benefit or attraction of signing the 21-year-old would be the fact that he is set to become a free agent when his contract expires at the end of the season.<\/p>\n

\n Why Watson could be Ryan Jack 2.0 at Rangers<\/strong>
\n <\/h2>\n

The signing of Lyall Cameron last summer, now out on loan at Aberdeen, may have alarm bells ringing when it comes to signing young, Scottish talent from within the Premiership, although, as was seen with the likes of Jack in the past, such opportunities can be too good to ignore.<\/p>\n

While Jack wasn’t exactly a youngster upon signing on a free transfer from the Dons back in 2017, he did prove a relatively long-term fit at Ibrox, having eventually departed seven years later after an injury-hit final season at the club.<\/p>\n

He didn’t bow out how he would’ve liked, although the now-34-year-old was a vital part of that impressive side under Steven Gerrard and then Giovanni van Bronckhorst, memorably netting the opener in the Scottish Cup final win in 2022.<\/p>\n

After racking up 250 appearances at Pittodrie, he went on to make a further 216 for the Gers, certainly proving one of the major recent success stories when it comes to signing ‘Premiership-proven’ talents.<\/p>\n

Watson, while still only 21, has already enjoyed a wealth of game time for Killie to date, now up to 137 appearances in all competitions, scoring and assisting 19 times.<\/p>\n

Like Jack, he isn’t necessarily a prolific scorer or provider, yet he really is an impressive operator in his central midfield berth, be it when deployed as a number six, a number eight or even as a number ten.<\/p>\n

Where he particularly excels is in regaining possession, having averaged 2.6 tackles and interceptions per game in the Premiership this season.<\/p>\n

For comparison, during the title-winning 2020\/21 campaign, the aforementioned Jack was only just behind, averaging 2.2 for that same metric.<\/p>\n

Much like Jack before him, there is a sense that Watson is now ready for that “next step”, in the view of former Gers man, Alan Hutton, having been named the Young Player of the Year in the division back in 2023\/24.<\/p>\n

In the view of one analyst, he could well be the “next big thing in Scottish football<\/a>“, with the graceful Scotland U21 international surely a wise pick as the Gers draw up their summer list of targets.<\/p>\n
