Chelsea crashed to a dismal 3-0 defeat against Brighton on Tuesday, leaving their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League in tatters as pressure mounts on beleaguered boss Liam Rosenior.<\/p>\n

Rosenior\u2019s side produced one of their worst performances of a miserable season as Ferdi Kadioglu put Brighton ahead in the first half before Jack Hinshelwood and Danny Welbeck netted after the interval.<\/p>\n

It is the first time that Chelsea have lost five consecutive league games without scoring since 1912, fittingly the year that the Titanic sank.<\/p>\n

Beaten seven times in their last eight games in all competitions, the Blues have just one victory in their past nine league matches.<\/p>\n

Chelsea are languishing in seventh place, seven points behind fifth-placed Liverpool in the fight for the top-five finish that guarantees a Champions League berth.<\/p>\n

Rosenior\u2019s team are in danger of missing out on European football altogether unless they can halt their wretched run.<\/p>\n

They face Leeds in the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday knowing a defeat at Wembley could push Rosenior to the brink of the sack just months after he arrived from Strasbourg to replace Enzo Maresca in January.<\/p>\n

Speaking after the game, Rosenior called the team\u2019s performance \u201cindefensible\u201d and \u201cunacceptable\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was unacceptable in every aspect of the game, unacceptable in our attitude,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s indefensible, that performance tonight. The manner of the goals we conceded, the amount of duels that we lost, the lack of intensity in the team. Something needs to change drastically right now.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the players as well need to have a look in the mirror for what they put in. You can talk about tactics, tactics come after the basics. Having more courage to play, winning duels, winning headers, tackles, conceding terrible goals.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cI can\u2019t defend that performance. It doesn\u2019t represent this football club, it doesn\u2019t represent anything I ask from the group and that has to change.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel numb I\u2019m so angry. Something needs to change drastically right now. The professionalism wasn\u2019t there.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to look in the mirror. I need to look in the mirror. The general attitude, spirit, determination was lacking a part from maybe three or four of the 11. That is nowhere near enough for this club.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether you\u2019re playing at this elite football club or any football club, to even be accused of throwing the towel in is unacceptable. That\u2019s all I\u2019m going to say. I\u2019m hurting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rosenior this week claimed Chelsea\u2019s owners have been \u201cmagnificent\u201d in their backing of him despite their alarming slump.<\/p>\n

Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali has said the club remain optimistic about long-term success under Rosenior.<\/p>\n

But the atmosphere around Chelsea is turning increasingly toxic. Boos greeted the full-time whistle following Saturday\u2019s 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at Stamford Bridge after supporters staged a protest against owners BlueCo ahead of kick-off.<\/p>\n

There were more jeers for Rosenior and his players from Chelsea\u2019s fuming fans at Brighton, who climbed above the Blues into sixth place.<\/p>\n

\u201cPathetic defending from Chelsea,\u201d former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton said on Sky Sports.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a team that look like they\u2019ve never played together before.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s worse than that is it\u2019s been a really gutless display.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve lacked any real intensity.<\/p>\n

\u201cChelsea have been played off the park by Brighton.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rosenior switched to a back five in a bid to make Chelsea harder to break down, but it took just seconds for it to become apparent that his plan would backfire.<\/p>\n

Kaoru Mitoma met Pascal Gross\u2019 cross with a stinging strike that forced a good save from Robert Sanchez in the opening moments.<\/p>\n

It was a warning that Chelsea failed to heed as Brighton took the lead in the third minute.<\/p>\n

Gross\u2019 corner was flicked on to Kadioglu as Chelsea failed to clear, their slow response allowing the defender to lash past Sanchez for his first goal in 17 months.<\/p>\n

That was the signal for chants against Chelsea\u2019s owners from the Blues supporters packed into one end of the Amex Stadium.<\/p>\n

Gross was tormenting Chelsea with his accurate deliveries and Jan Paul van Hecke went close from another of the German\u2019s crosses, leaping for a header that Sanchez tipped over.<\/p>\n

Chelsea were in disarray and Sanchez almost gifted Brighton a goal when he miscued a pass straight to Carlos Baleba, who teed up Hinshelwood for a shot that was cleared off the line by Trevoh Chalobah.<\/p>\n

For the first time in a league game this season, Chelsea failed to muster a single shot in the opening 30 minutes.<\/p>\n

They finally managed a shot five minutes before half-time, but Chalobah\u2019s unsuccessful effort only earned derision as furious fans chanted \u201cwe want our Chelsea back\u201d.<\/p>\n

When Romeo Lavia drilled wide after the interval, Rosenior was targeted for abuse from the travelling supporters.<\/p>\n

The opprobrium got even louder in the 56th minute.<\/p>\n

Chelsea claimed they should have had a free-kick when the ball appeared to bounce off Yankuba Minteh\u2019s arm.<\/p>\n

But play was allowed to continue and Brighton launched a blistering counter as Georginio Rutter sprinted away before picking out Hinshelwood for a composed finish.<\/p>\n

Chelsea had no response and Rosenior was bereft of ideas on the touchline as Brighton delivered one final blow in stoppage time.<\/p>\n

Maxim De Cuyper cut the ball back for Welbeck inside the area and he fired into the roof of the net as Rosenior shook his head in disbelief.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
