The selectors announced a refreshed 15-man group on Wednesday, rewarding domestic form and introducing fresh faces as the team looks to move forward after a disappointing Ashes campaign.

Durham batter Emilio Gay, Somerset wicketkeeper-batter James Rew and Hampshire fast bowler Sonny Baker have all received their first Test call-ups. The squad also sees the return of Rehan Ahmed, Matthew Fisher and Ollie Robinson as England begin a new phase under captain Ben Stokes.

Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope pay the price after Ashes struggles

The omission of Crawley and Pope is undoubtedly the biggest talking point from the squad announcement. Both players endured a difficult Ashes series and failed to cement their places in England’s top order.

Crawley managed 273 runs across the series at an average of 27, while Pope scored just 125 runs in three Tests before being dropped for the final two matches. England’s selectors have now decided to look elsewhere, prioritising players who have consistently delivered in county cricket this season.

The decision reflects a clear shift in approach as England aim to build a more stable batting line-up ahead of an important home summer.

County performers finally get rewarded

Among the new names, Gay’s inclusion has been one of the most deserved selections of the season. The 26-year-old Durham batter has been in exceptional form in the County Championship, scoring 552 runs at a remarkable average of 92, including three centuries.

James Rew’s rise has also continued at an impressive pace. The 22-year-old Somerset star has already built a strong reputation in county cricket with his mature batting and composure behind the stumps. Rew has registered 12 first-class hundreds already, the highest tally achieved by any player aged 22 or younger in County Championship history.

Meanwhile, Sonny Baker’s selection highlights England’s continued focus on developing fast bowlers capable of troubling opposition batters with raw pace. The Hampshire quick has picked up 14 wickets in the current Championship season and is regarded as one of the fastest young bowlers in English cricket.

Also READ: Michael Vaughan criticizes ECB over delay in appointing a national selector

Rehan Ahmed returns while Jofra Archer remains unavailable

England have also recalled leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, who is currently representing the Delhi Capitals in the IPL.
