Some stand out in a good way; others for all the wrong reasons. Some have made big changes, while others prioritize continuity. Here, we’ll round up what’s working and what isn’t for all the teams, as well as the key players, surprise stories, and special roles that have made an impact thus far.

1. Portland Thorns

Portland started remarkably well for a team whose head coach, Robert Vilahamn, arrived on the eve of their opening league game. It’s difficult to discern any major change in overall approach, though their defense has looked more compact than before. The significant improvements have come from the players. Jessie Fleming has filled the Sam Coffey void, and Olivia Moultrie has found yet another level in attacking midfield. Sophia Wilson has looked as devastating as ever up front, with good support from natural strikers Pietra Tordin and Reilyn Turner, both committing to their roles while technically playing out of position on the flanks.

2. Washington Spirit

Washington look like a team without significant weaknesses at this stage of the season. They can attack patiently or directly, and are tough to break down defensively. Rebeca Bernal has moved from center-back to defensive midfield and is forming a strong partnership with Hal Hershfelt, while Leicy Santos (three goals, one assist) is doing a good job of filling the gap left by Croix Bethune’s departure to Kansas City. The new signings have settled quickly—fullback Lucia Di Guglielmo looks like she has played in the NWSL for years, while Claudia Martínez is a top class super sub with an eye for goal. The Spirit look strong candidates for the Shield this year, and perhaps more.

Access the best women’s soccer coverage all year long

Start your FREE, 7-day trial of The Equalizer Extra for industry-leading reporting and insight on the USWNT, NWSL and beyond.

Source link

Credit: Denis Poroy-Imagn Images Approximately a quarter of the way into the 2026 National Women’s Soccer League campaign, teams are starting to showcase their identities.
