It would be the former midfielder’s first full-time head coaching role since he was sacked by Middlesbrough in June 2025.

There’s potential for contract negotiations to be completed in time for United’s final home game of the season against Nottingham Forest on Sunday. Carrick’s backroom staff are expected to remain the same, with assistant Steve Holland, coaches Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, and Travis Binnion, and goalkeeping coach Craig Mawson.

Andreas Georgson, who currently serves as set-piece coach at Tottenham Hotspur, could return to United after working at the club during the 2024-25 season, Whitwell adds.

Since mid-January, Carrick has led Manchester United out of the confusion and anger that often defined the regime of his predecessor, Ruben Amorim, and back into the Champions League. The caretaker boss made simple changes to the team’s look – most notably playing Bruno Fernandes in a more advanced position and returning Kobbie Mainoo to the starting lineup – and has overseen the Premier League’s second-best record (to Manchester City) since his first match. He’s been in charge for wins over each of the fellow “big six.”

Carrick was given more time on the training ground because United weren’t in Europe and had been eliminated from the FA Cup and League Cup by the time he took over. They’re playing a 40-match campaign, which is their fewest number of games in a season since the 1914-15 term.

The 44-year-old previously steadied the ship after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was dismissed in November 2021. United won twice and drew once under Carrick before Ralf Rangnick took the reins.

Source link

Manchester United have begun the process to hire Michael Carrick as their full-time head coach.
