The Socceroos have been dealt a significant blow with attacking midfielder Riley McGree ruled out of the World Cup with injury.<\/p>\n

ESPN<\/a> reported that the 27-year-old\u2019s chances of playing in a second straight World Cup were ended after he left the pitch with what appeared to be a hamstring injury in Middlesborough\u2019s playoff final loss to Hull at Wembley Stadium on the weekend.<\/p>\n

It was a sliding doors moment for McGree as his Middlesborough only played in that game because Southampton were expelled from the playoff final over the spying saga.<\/p>\n

The South Australian came off the pitch in the 76th minute of that match and watched from the sidelines as his dream of promotion to the Premier League ended in heartbreaking fashion with Hull\u2019s Oli McBurnie scoring a 95th minute winner<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the space of roughly 48 hours, McGree\u2019s Premier League and World Cup hopes came to an end.<\/p>\n

The brutal blow will force Socceroos boss Tony Popovic into a rethink with McGree an almost certain starter for Australia\u2019s World Cup opener against Turkey in Vancouver on June 13.<\/p>\n

In Qatar four years ago, McGree started in all four games and assisted Mathew Leckie\u2019s goal against Denmark that put the Socceroos through the Round of 16 for just the second time.<\/p>\n

McGree was instrumental in Australia reaching this year\u2019s World Cup too by setting up Aziz Behich\u2019s goal to defeat Japan and effectively secure qualification last June.<\/p>\n

He has also been in impressive form at club level, scoring a goal in the playoff semi-final for Middlesborough, while finding the back of the net on five other occasions and providing three assists across the Championship season.<\/p>\n

McGree is not the only Australian to have their World Cup hopes cruelled by injury.<\/p>\n

Hayden Matthews and Nick D\u2019Agostino have already departed the Socceroos\u2019 camp in Florida, which is taking place right now, while Patrick Yazbek sustained a quad injury playing for American club Nashville earlier this month.<\/p>\n

Popovic will name Australia\u2019s final 26-player squad on June 1, immediately following a friendly against tournament co-hosts Mexico in Los Angeles on May 30, but it is beginning to take shape as eight players were brought into camp, while eight others were sent home it was announced on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n

Following the end of the European club season, Socceroos captain Mat Ryan leads the list of inclusions after his stellar form between the sticks prevented Levante from being relegated from La Liga.<\/p>\n

Ryan is joined by central defenders Alessandro Circati and Lucas Herrington, who made an impressive debut during the last international window, as new arrivals in Florida.<\/p>\n

Paul Okon-Engstler, Awer Mabil, Kye Rowles and Kai Trewin also return from Popovic\u2019s most recent squad, while a surprise bolter has emerged.<\/p>\n

Tete Yengi has received a first ever call-up off the back of the 25-year-old\u2019s impressive loan spell in Japan for Machida Zelvia.<\/p>\n

Yengi\u2019s home club is Livingston in Scotland and he has scored six goals in 22 appearances across the JLeague 1 and the AFC Champions League Elite.<\/p>\n

On the other side of the coin, Mitch Duke is one of the hard luck stories of this year\u2019s squad.<\/p>\n

Duke scored the winner against Tunisia in Qatar four years ago but the 35-year-old\u2019s international career will now come to an end as he said he would retire following the World Cup whether he was picked or not.<\/p>\n

Daniel Bennie (QPR), Raphael Borges Rodrigues (Wigan Athletic, on loan from Coventry City), Anthony Caceres (Macarthur FC), Dylan Leonard (Schalke), Alex Robertson (Cardiff City), Gianni Stensness (Viking) and Ante Suto (Hibernian) are the other players to have been sent home from the camp. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
