The Norwegian dominated the first set, clinching it courtesy of two breaks of serve in his favor. While the second set was quite competitive, Ruud gained the upper hand in the tie-break to claim yet another set.<\/p>\n<p>Ruud was on the brink of victory twice in the third set. After going up a break, he held two match points on Safiullin&#8217;s serve in the eighth game, which he failed to convert. He stepped up to serve for the match after that, and blew three match points to get broken.<\/p>\n<p>In a dramatic turn of events, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportskeeda.com\/player\/roman-safiullin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-is-sponsored=\"false\">Safiullin<\/a> bagged the next two games to claim the set, and won the fourth set without losing a single game. Ruud regrouped in the fifth set, breaking the Russian&#8217;s serve twice for a 6-2, 7-6 (5), 5-7, 0-6. 6-2 victory.<\/p>\n<p>Medjedovic&#8217;s first-round opponent was Yannick Hanfmann. The former broke the latter&#8217;s serve in the fourth game of the first set to go 3-1 up, and maintained that advantage until the end to capture the set. An early break of serve in the second set laid the groundwork for Medjedovic to take a two-set lead.<\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportskeeda.com\/player\/yannick-hanfmann\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-is-sponsored=\"false\">Hanfmann<\/a> squandered his break advantage at the start of the third set, he ultimately outplayed Medjedovic in the tie-break to win the set.
