A day earlier,\u00a0Gurindervir\u00a0Singh had lowered the national record to 10.17 seconds in the first semifinals. Minutes later,\u00a0Animesh\u00a0Kujur\u00a0reclaimed it with 10.15 seconds in the second semi-final.\u00a0Gurindervir\u00a0seized the opportunity the final offered. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/sport\/athletics\/athletics-gurindervir-and-vishal-set-the-track-ablaze-with-national-records\/article71015376.ece\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">His\u00a0time of 10.09 seconds not only restored the record to his name but also made him the first Indian to break the 10.1-second barrier<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The achievement marked the latest chapter in a rivalry that is transforming Indian sprinting.\u00a0Anil\u00a0Kumar\u2019s national record of 10.21 seconds had remained unbeaten since 2000. By clocking 10.18 seconds,\u00a0Animesh\u00a0not only broke that in July 2025, but became the first Indian to cross the 10.2-second barrier.<\/p>\n<p>While it took 25 years for Indian men\u2019s sprinting to breach the 10.2-second barrier, it has seen a dramatic leap forward since then. With\u00a0Gurindervir\u2019s\u00a010.09 seconds, followed by\u00a0Animesh\u2019s\u00a010.15 and 10.18 seconds, and\u00a0Manikanta\u00a0Hoblidhar\u2019s\u00a010.19 seconds, four of the five fastest 100m sprints by Indian men have been recorded in the last two seasons.<\/p>\n<p>But where does India\u2019s fastest-ever sprinter stand in the global arena?<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline_embed article-block-item\">\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-table\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/data\/100m-sprinting-gurindervir-singh-is-indias-fastest-man-but-the-finish-line-is-still-far-away\/visualisation\/29186573\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/29186573\/thumbnail\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"table visualization\"\/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>An analysis of World Athletics\u2019 all-time men\u2019s 100m lists shows both the significance of\u00a0Gurindervir\u2019s\u00a0breakthrough and how far India remains from\u00a0sprinting\u2019s\u00a0elite.\u00a0On the global all-time list,\u00a0Gurindervir\u2019s\u00a0record ranks only 524th.<\/p>\n<p>At the very top, the sport remains remarkably concentrated. Ten of the top 11 performances belong to sprinters from just two countries \u2014 Jamaica and the\u00a0U.S. Jamaica\u2019s Usain Bolt holds the world record at 9.58 seconds. American Tyson Gay shares the second-fastest time in history at 9.69 seconds. The only exception is Kenya\u2019s Ferdinand\u00a0Omanyala, whose 9.77-second run shares the 10th\u00a0place.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline_embed article-block-item\">\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-scatter\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/data\/100m-sprinting-gurindervir-singh-is-indias-fastest-man-but-the-finish-line-is-still-far-away\/visualisation\/29219876\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/29219876\/thumbnail\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"scatter visualization\"\/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The sub-10-second barrier remains one of athletics\u2019 most exclusive benchmarks. More than half a century after electronic timing became the standard in 1968, only 39 countries have produced athletes with 100m runs recorded under 10 seconds.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline_embed article-block-item\">\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-scatter\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/data\/100m-sprinting-gurindervir-singh-is-indias-fastest-man-but-the-finish-line-is-still-far-away\/visualisation\/29220880\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/29220880\/thumbnail\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"scatter visualization\"\/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Martin Owens,\u00a0Animesh\u2019s\u00a0coach and the head coach of the Odisha Reliance Foundation Athletics High Performance Centre, told\u00a0<i>The Hindu<\/i>\u00a0that breaking that barrier requires far more than raw speed. \u201cYou need natural talent. You need good facilities. You need good recovery and medical backup. You need an intelligent programme,\u201d Mr. Owens said, adding that coaching from an early age, financial support and international exposure are also crucial.<\/p>\n<p>When every country\u2019s fastest man ever is compared, India sits at around 65th\u00a0among 182 nations. Several nations with populations under 1.5\u00a0crore\u00a0rank ahead of India, including Trinidad and Tobago, Botswana and Namibia.<\/p>\n<p>It is notable that the fastest sprint performances are usually recorded with a helping breeze. An analysis of the best performances from these 182 nations shows that 139 were achieved with tailwinds between 0.1 and 2 metres per second, while only 17 came while facing headwinds. Even slight wind assistance matters in an event decided by hundredths of a second.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline_embed article-block-item\">\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/data\/100m-sprinting-gurindervir-singh-is-indias-fastest-man-but-the-finish-line-is-still-far-away\/visualisation\/29187297\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/29187297\/thumbnail\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"chart visualization\"\/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Four of India\u2019s top five performances, including\u00a0Gurindervir\u2019s, were recorded with tailwinds.
