Mandatory Credit: William Purnell-Imagn Images

On Monday, the Kansas City Current announced that star player Temwa Chawinga would stay with the club through the 2029 season. Chawinga, a two-time Golden Boot and MVP award winner, is one of the stars defining the National Women Soccer League these days. She is the first player in NWSL history to earn back-to-back honors in her first two seasons, and her presence on the field has the power to completely change a game.

“Temwa is truly special, and no one changes the game more than she does,” said Chris and Angie Long, Current co-owners, in an official press release. “She is a someone people want to play with and she makes our team better. We are so excited to extend her contract and keep her in Kansas City.”

Since joining the Current in 2024, Chawinga has made 52 appearances for the team and scored 38 goals. It’s hard to capture just how monumental her NWSL career has been — her accomplishments include (but are not limited to) breaking the single-season record for goals scored and becoming the first NWSL player to score against all opposing teams in one season. In 2025 she was ranked by The Guardian as the sixth best female footballer in the world.

In addition to her club career, Chawinga’s international career has elevated her importance as a player. She debuted for the Malawi Women’s National Team at age 18 and has since made dozens of appearances and scored over 25 goals.

“Temwa is a generational player, and extending her contract was a top priority for the club,” said general manager Ryan Dell in the Current’s press release. “We’re excited to have such a transformational player continue to call Kansas City home for the years to come.”

Source link

May 30, 2026; Kansas City, Missouri, USA; Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga (6) takes a shot on goal during the first half against the Boston Legacy FC at CPKC Stadium.
