While Max Holloway is widely regarded as one of the greatest strikers in MMA, he has never been known for his grappling. In fact, ‘Blessed’ was largely controlled on the ground during his BMF fight against Charles Oliveira in March.<\/p>\n
Now, as the Hawaiian prepares for a rematch against Conor McGregor at UFC 329, he has revealed that, unlike many MMA stars, he never wrestled in high school. Hilariously, however, Holloway avoided wrestling during his teenage years for a reason few would expect; something he now admits he regrets.<\/p>\n
Speaking to Megan Olivi during a recent segment of Becoming a Fighter<\/em>, Holloway said the embarrassment of wearing a singlet was what swayed him away from the sport:<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/template><\/p>\n “Oh yeah, for sure, for sure. Wrestling was available at my high school. And a bunch of my friends were trying to get me into wrestling, but I wasn’t about to be caught dead in a singlet, dawg, are you crazy? At first, I thought it was crazy, but now look at me. I’m 30-something old. I use tights to fight. Not many seem to have forgotten his loss against Charles Oliveira, especially not his upcoming opponent, Conor McGregor<\/a>.<\/p>\n During a sit-down with Joe Rogan<\/a> ahead of his upcoming welterweight clash, McGregor took aim at Holloway’s loss against Oliveira, accusing both fighters of draining themselves to make the lightweight limit:<\/p>\n “You know, I’ve seen Max and Charles starve themselves.
