Who rides XC hardtails anymore? Canyon has the answer with this new Exceed CFR Gravel bike build… and it’s ultra-distance adventure bikepacking racers… in addition to classic cross-country and marathon riders. Dropbars on a mountain bike? Yes, please, say the backcountry lunatics<\/em><\/s> riders<\/em> taking on tough multi-day adventure bikepacking races like Tour Divide, Silk Road, Atlas & Hellenic mountain races. <\/p>\n

At the same time, the regular flat bar Exceed hardtail once again gets a CFR frame option, still perfect for mountain bikers looking to get the best bang for their buck in a light, XC & marathon race-ready mountain bike. There’s nothing like a lightweight carbon hardtail for that feeling of rocket-like speed and pedaling efficiency. And now the top-tier XC bike is back, and a tiny bit more accessible. <\/p>\n

Canyon Exceed goes far with new CFR flat & drop bar builds<\/h2>\n

Last year, Canyon revamped their carbon XC hardtail, with more modern geometry (long reach, 67\u00b0 head angle, 75\u00b0 seat angle), improved standover, added internal frame storage, an extra bottle cage mount under the downtube, return to a threaded BSA bottom bracket, and a UDH update. <\/p>\n

But… there was only a CF-level carbon frame layup at around 1500g. The lightweight carbon Exceed hardtail has long been the lightest mountain bike Canyon made. And it always was a pretty affordable to get a rocket-fast off-road bike – with complete CF carbon mountain bike builds from 2000-5000\u20ac.<\/p>\n

But with the added adventure-ready capabilities of last year’s update, the Exceed was really itching for some lighter CFR-level builds. And now Canyon has delivered with two options dropbar for gravel adventures and flat bar for more traditional cross-country & marathon riding.<\/p>\n

Dropbar mountain bike for gravel adventures<\/h3>\n

Sure, gravel bikes are cool and fast and all. But for multiple days riding the roughest tracks, nothing beats the efficiency of a hardtail, the comfort of proper high-volume mountain bike tires and a real suspension fork, plus the multiple hand positions of a dropbar to limit hand & wrist fatigue.<\/p>\n

Canyon describes the dropbar build as a response to adventure racers looking for more progressive gravel bike setups:<\/p>\n

“Riders are increasingly moving beyond conventional, off-the-shelf gravel and hardtail setups\u2014and instead custom-fitting drop bars to mountain bike frames. The goal is specific: MTB-level grip, toughness, and gearing\u2014paired with the ergonomics of a drop-bar cockpit. <\/p>\n

Rather than asking riders to piece together compromises from spare parts, the new Exceed CFR Gravel brings that formula together straight from the factory by offering the Exceed\u2019s capability in a drop-bar build.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

A key element of that is a special edition Fox 32 Step Cast fork (only shown on the studio photos, not the custom bike setup from this year’s Atlas Mountain Race<\/em>) that has been reduced to just 60mm of front travel (down from the stock 100mm). <\/p>\n

Canyon’s current<\/em> geometry chart for the Exceed CFR Gravel doesn’t show the impacts of that reduced axle-to-crown length.<\/p>\n

But by shortening the fork by 4cm: it steepens the headtube angle to 69.3\u00b0, the seat angle to ~77.3\u00b0, lowers the bottom bracket 17mm to -75mm, and increases frame Reach to 449 & lowers Stack to 586mm (for a size M).<\/p>\n

All of those changes go to making the drop bar bike handling quicker than the XC version, without losing stability.<\/p>\n
