A famous Australian name will return to the Premier League next season, with Marcus Neill signing his first professional contract with Sunderland FC.<\/p>\n
The 18-year old is the son of former Socceroos great Lucas Neill, who served as national captain from 2006 to 2013.<\/p>\n
The younger Neill \u2014 a striker in stark contrast to his famous father, who gained a reputation as a gritty, no-nonsense defender \u2014 has starred for Sunderland\u2019s youth teams since joining the club from Liverpool in 2024, having also spent time at his father\u2019s old club Blackburn Rovers.<\/p>\n

Join now and get your first month for just $1.<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n Born and raised in England, Marcus Neill has long represented Australia at junior level, and scored an 89th minute winner in the Young Socceroos\u2019 win over Cambodia at the ASEAN U19 Boys\u2019 Championship in June.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s the proudest moment in my career so far,\u201d Neill said of signing his new contract. <\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a good milestone to have but now I just need to keep pushing on to the first-team and have a good career in the game.<\/p>\n \u201cAs a person and a player, I\u2019ve developed a lot. The coaches have been really helpful for me, and they\u2019ve kept me going and kept me humble along the way. I\u2019ve had two really good seasons, and I\u2019m looking to push on and get as far as I can.\u201d<\/p>\n Neill quickly progressed to the Black Cats\u2019 U21 team in Premier League 2, scoring 48 goals in 67 appearances for the club.<\/p>\n At just 16 years old, he became the U21 team\u2019s second-youngest ever goal-scorer in a 2-1 win over Arsenal in December 2024.<\/p>\n MORE TRANSFER NEWS<\/b><\/p>\n BEACH ON THE RISE: Rising keeper on move to top European league<\/a><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n \u201cMarcus fits a model and the profile of the sort of player we look for \u2013 he ticks a lot of the boxes and we believe he can develop with us,\u201d former Sunderland head of recruitment Stuart Harvey told local media after a purple patch of seven goals in two games in mid-2025. <\/p>\n Lucas Neill earned 96 caps for the Socceroos from 1996 to 2013.<\/p>\n He was among the Premier League\u2019s doughtiest defenders during stints with Blackburn Rovers (227 games) and West Ham in the 2000s, famously breaking Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher\u2019s leg with a nasty challenge during the 2003\/04 Premier League season.<\/p>\n Despite his English birth, the younger Neill is in no doubt that the Socceroos are in his blood.<\/p>\n
