The Utah Mammoth<\/a> are no longer building toward some distant future. They believe their window has opened.<\/p>\n Utah reinforced that message by signing<\/a> defenseman John Marino<\/a> to an eight-year, $54 million contract extension. The deal carries a $6.75 million annual cap hit and begins with the 2027-28 season<\/a>, keeping Marino under contract through 2034-35.<\/p>\n That is a substantial commitment to a player who will be 30 when the extension begins. It also tells us plenty about how the Mammoth view themselves after reaching the playoffs last season.<\/p>\n Marino is coming off the finest offensive season of his NHL career. He recorded four goals and career highs with 32 assists and 36 points across 80 games. He also finished with an impressive plus-43 rating. Utah clearly believes that production was more than a one-year spike.<\/p>\n Alongside Mikhail Sergachev and MacKenzie Weegar, Marino gives the Mammoth three experienced defensemen capable of handling difficult minutes. Their presence should also prevent young players such as Dmitri Simashev and Maveric Lamoureux from being forced into oversized roles before they are ready.<\/p>\n The Mammoth didn\u2019t pay Marino to become their offensive star from the blue line. That isn\u2019t his game. They paid him because he moves the puck, defends reliably and can play against strong competition without creating nightly chaos. Every contender needs someone like that. They just don\u2019t usually hand him eight years.<\/p>\n Marino will be approximately 37 when the extension expires. Utah is betting on more than his remaining prime years. The team is also accepting the possibility that his performance could decline considerably near the end of the agreement.<\/p>\n The length likely helped keep Marino\u2019s annual cap hit at $6.75 million. With the NHL salary cap expected to rise, that figure could become reasonable for a dependable top-four defenseman.<\/p>\n However, the final few seasons could get ugly if Marino loses a step. Defensemen can remain effective into their mid-30s, but there are no refunds if they don\u2019t.<\/p>\n Utah is also accumulating an expensive veteran defense. Sergachev, Weegar and Marino provide stability now, although their contracts could eventually limit the organization\u2019s flexibility as its younger players require raises. That problem can wait. Utah is focused on winning.<\/p>\n For years, this organization operated like the future was permanently under construction. Draft picks and prospects were collected while meaningful postseason expectations remained somewhere over the horizon.<\/p>\n Those days appear to be over. Utah reached the playoffs during the 2025-26 season, acquired Weegar and has now prevented Marino from reaching unrestricted free agency in 2027. The Mammoth have also made major long-term commitments to Logan Cooley, Nick Schmaltz and other members of their emerging core.<\/p>\n This is what an organization does when it believes it has enough talent to compete. Marino\u2019s extension may eventually become uncomfortable. Eight-year contracts signed near a player\u2019s 30th birthday rarely age like fine wine. Some age more like potato salad left beside the pool.<\/p>\n For now, however, the Mammoth have secured a reliable defenseman who fits their system and has proved he can contribute to a playoff team.
