The curious twist of fate that has seen Nottingham Forest<\/a> welcome Oliver Glasner<\/a> to the dugout following several seasons of intense rivalry with the former Crystal Palace manager feels very on-key.<\/p>\n

This is the start of a new era, and one which promises much. Glasner bagged silverware in both of the last two terms, winning the FA Cup and then the Conference League. The Tricky Trees will hope he can repeat the trick.<\/p>\n

Though the sale of Elliot Anderson to Manchester City was disappointing, the Three Lions midfielder was always going to be head-hunted by the biggest fish in the Premier League<\/a>, and Forest have banked an incredible \u00a3116m cheque.<\/p>\n

The Tricky Trees are yet to make a signing – though they are closing in on centre-back Ousmane Diomande from Sporting CP – but Glasner and Evangelos Marinakis and co are working hard, with Lucas Bergvall<\/a> being pursued to replace Anderson.<\/p>\n

\n Why Forest want Bergvall to replace Anderson<\/strong>
\n <\/h2>\n

Bergvall is still only 20 years old, but he has already played 78 matches for Tottenham, suffering through the many lows in north London, but also enjoying some high points.<\/p>\n

They have already made a \u00a345m offer for the Sweden international, rejected, after an initial \u00a338m approach fell flat. Spurs don’t want to sell, but Bergvall wants a change of scenery, so this is certainly one to keep a close eye on.<\/p>\n

Bergvall is not Anderson, but he is a silky and stylish midfielder with a natural desire to progress forwards. He is tidy and clever on the ball, and could yet develop into an elite Premier League midfielder.<\/p>\n

However, there’s no question that these are two talents currently performing at wildly contrasting levels. Throwing him into the deep end at the City Ground would be something of a risk, and no mistake, but the potential is there.<\/p>\n

After all, Anderson was raw and unpolished when he moved to Nottingham two years ago, cast away by Newcastle United.<\/p>\n

Glasner is an impatient negotiator, and he will want this one wrapped up – or not. However, Bergvall isn’t the only exciting talent on the Austrian’s list as the new campaign draws near.<\/p>\n

\n How Forest could sign a bigger talent than Bergvall<\/strong>
\n <\/h2>\n

Glasner has been clear in intimating to his players that formation is not the be-all and end-all in his tactical world. He wants players who will advance the project, take Forest back up to the heights they reached with Nuno, stepping onto European grass.<\/p>\n

He has found another who could be perfect for the job. According to BILD over in Germany, Ernest Poku is emerging as a top target for the Tricky Trees, with Bayer Leverkusen open to selling the winger for just \u20ac25m (\u00a321m) this summer.<\/p>\n

Poku, 25, is also attracting interest from Sunderland, and Leverkusen are open to talks in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n

Poku is an out-and-out winger, whereas Bergvall tends to occupy central midfield spaces and carry the ball forward, toward danger, but that’s not to say the Ghanaian isn’t versatile. He can play across the frontline and drop back to wing-back positions too.<\/p>\n

He is indeed an able and combative defender, so would play into the vision Glasner is instilling, perhaps sitting wide beside a three-man backline, as was constructed and cemented at Selhurst Park.<\/p>\n

But with 33 goals from 66 matches as a central focal point, Poku may find himself filling in at number nine from time to time. In the Bundesliga last season, he scored five goals and supplied five assists, playing 29 games and starting only 16 of them.<\/p>\n

Poku is ready for the Premier League, ready for the role that Glasner is eager to give him. Glasner is not wedded to his formation; he will chop and change, and signing Poku would give him the freedom to do so.<\/p>\n

This could be a winger who makes an instant impact at a Forest side who saw standards slip last season, so much turmoil threatening to consume the outfit. Bergvall might not have the quality – just yet – to take on a talismanic role, whereas Poku could add so much spirit and initiative in attack.<\/p>\n

It’s been a slow start to the summer transfer window for a Forest side in transition. But this is a marathon, not a sprint, and there’s no question that Glasner is showing a degree of ambition.<\/p>\n

With money in the bank following Anderson’s sale, there’s room there for Forest to target both Poku and Bergvall – and more besides.<\/p>\n
